Per Albert Breer:

Cowboys' contract conundrum. Jay Ratliff was cut this week, but Dallas will keep paying for him, with the defensive tackle counting for $3.45 million on this year's salary cap and $6.93 million on next year's. Ratliff, Tony Romo, DeMarcus Ware, Jason Witten, Sean Lee, Miles Austin and Brandon Carr are set to account for roughly $86.7 million on the cap next year -- that's about 70 percent of the alloted space committed to seven players, one of whom isn't on the team anymore. Considering that figure, you'd have to assume Anthony Spencer, who's injured, will be a goner next year, wonder if one or two of the players on the list could be gone, and understand how complicated it might be to re-sign Dez Bryant, who'll be in a contract year in 2014.
-------------

Austin has got to go. I'd even debate cutting another one if the cap savings could be significant.

Another case of brilliant cap handling from Stephen Jones.

Hey, Ware can go if he doesn't start doing anything. Don't be scared, you know that's the "other one" you were talking about. :lol

Definitely Austin can GTFO.

Obviously Romo, Witten, and Lee aren't going anywhere and neither should Carr.

Actually I was thinking Witten since Escobar is so damn good.

Witten's probably making the least of the group, so that doesn't make sense.

Austin would be fine, but is it financially feasible to cut him? I think he's another one where the cap savings from cutting him don't outweigh the cost of keeping him until the following year.

What about Ware? I know we restructured him earlier this year but he's starting to break down.

As great as he's been I think you'd certainly have to consider it especially if he continues to struggle and battle injuries this season.

As they always say, it's best to release a player a year too early than a year too late.

I know you have to make a business move but it'd kill me to see him end his career here like that.

I thought that guy could make a run at third all time on the sack leader list. I figured he'd be able to hang around Jason Taylor like and continue to pile up sacks even if he slowed down.

And he came out and got 4 sacks early this season making me think he was right back on track, but these last few weeks have been brutal for him. He really does look like the tank is empty right now. It'd be an amazingly rapid decline.

Cowboys will be $31M over cap
Updated: October 20, 2013, 11:20 AM ET
By Adam Schefter | ESPN

The Dallas Cowboys are projected to be at least a league-leading $31 million over the salary cap next season.

The Cowboys will face what one NFL executive called "a train wreck" in terms of their salary-cap issues.

If Dallas is $31 million over the cap, it would be $13 million more than the next-closest team, the New Orleans Saints.

Dallas' messy salary-cap situation got even messier this week when the Cowboys released former Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jay Ratliff, who will count for almost $7 million against the cap in 2014.

Dallas likely will be forced to cut more players and slash contracts in an effort just to get back to the salary cap, especially after giving lucrative extensions to quarterback Tony Romo, linebacker Sean Lee, tight end Jason Witten and wide receiver Miles Austin.

Jerry and Stephen Jones is how it gets fixed. No other way.
Yes, by those fuckers not being here anymore, obviously.

But I'm saying, I have no idea how they are gonna fix this mess if we assume they are still running the show. I don't know who you release to get under the cap, there are no obvious moves. And Miles Austin isn't gonna bring us in compliance all by himself.

I don't know the answer to that question.

I love how rival GMs always have something to say.

Yeah. Fire the GM and his family.

Or we could all simultaneously win a separate lottery, buy the team, and run it perfectly winning the superbowl every year.

Equal chance of both happening.
