Barry Church disputes personal fouls

October, 14, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

ARLINGTON, Texas -- After twice being penalized for late hits on Robert Griffin III, Barry Church knows there's a possibility that he'll be receiving one of those dreaded envelopes from the NFL office this week.

“Man, I hope not,” Church said. “That was some ... I'm not going to say it. I don't know. If it happens, it happens. That guy's high-stepping. He's about to show me up. He's high-stepping over there to the sideline -- nah. And the second one, I'm getting blocked! How am I roughing him if I'm getting blocked? Whatever, man.”

Both of Church's penalties, which could result in fines, happened in the third quarter. The flags flew after Griffin scrambled for first downs and got out of bounds. The first penalty occurred when Church tackled Griffin at the end of a 26-yard run. The second occurred when Church made contact with Griffin while being blocked at the end of an 11-yard run.

The contact wasn't malicious in either case, and Church is convinced that neither flag was warranted.

“That was frustrating,” Church said. “It was real frustrating, both of those penalties. I guess it's part of the game, though.”

Church points out that Griffin, who rushed for 815 yards and seven touchdowns last season and ran for 77 yards on nine carries Sunday night, is too dangerous to treat like a typical quarterback once he leaves the pocket.

“If he would have stopped on a dime and cut back on me, then everybody would have been like, ‘Oh, what the heck is Church doing? Why didn't he tackle him?'” Church said. “I'll never take a chance. If a dude looks like he's about to make a move, I'm going to tackle him.

“But they called it. If they call it, they call it. I've got to live with it.”

The first one was borderline and could have gone either way but that second one was absolute garbage.

As Church mentioned, he's being blocked and RGIII is high-stepping down the sideline picking up extra yardage. So he reaches out halfheartedly pushes RGIII. It was basically a one-handed graze with his off hand.

I still want to know what the hell Marinelli said that was so bad the refs called a penalty on him. That call was killer by the refs.

Exactly. It looked like RG was going out but he could have still cut back at that point. Church had to hit him. Fuck, hit him anyway.

There was a play earlier in the game where it looked like he was going out of bounds and then he ran up the sideline for an addition 5 yards. Not sure what the hell they expect a defender to do. The second penalty looked like a shitty acting job by RGIII to me.

It was a difficult game to watch, officiating-wise. Seems like we were getting called for a lot of ticky tack shit in the 2nd half but Washington could hold our defense on just about every pass play.

It is about consistancy. They were horribly inconsistant so both sides feel wronged. The main thing you want from any officiating crew in any sport is to be consistant

I love how he admits to it in the article, and then quickly says that he wasn't doing that against Church. The second one looked like a goddamn flop in the game. I hope the refs take notice and let defenders get away with a couple because of his statement.

I don't blame him for doing that. The NFL created this garbage by being way too over-protective of QBs.

I can't believe Suh was fined $31K for that hit on Weeden.

It's pathetic.

I'd love to see him do this and get hit so hard he's put on IR for a prolapsed asshole.

He could take breast cancer awareness month to a whole new level with a pink sock. :towel

Absolutely pathetic.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly wtf Suh did wrong this time.

Idiot Griffin is going to lose the benefit of the doubt after admitting that, he's quite the bona fide genius, eh?

Someone needs to give an intentional helmet to the body on that Landino asshole.

If a player intentionally uses the helmet as a weapon it is considered spearing regardless of the part of the body. One test is lowering the head and pointing it.

Cameron Lawrence fined for big hit

October, 17, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys linebacker Cameron Lawrence was fined $21,000 for a blind-side block on Dwayne Harris' 90-yard kickoff return last week against the Washington Redskins.

Lawrence, who was playing in his first regular-season game, was not penalized for his hit on David Amerson during the game. Because he is being paid the rookie minimum $405,000, Lawrence will be able to pay the fine in installments. Before taxes, Lawrence makes roughly $23,823 per week.

He will appeal the fine.

While Lawrence was informed of his fine, safety Barry Church had not heard from the league regarding possible fines for his hits on Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III that drew unnecessary roughness penalties.

"I definitely thought it was a gray area," Church said. “I felt like he was still in bounds on one but they made the call and I've just got to live with it ... From now on I'll probably just try to assist the quarterback out of bounds, just usher him out of bounds instead of putting my hands on him."

Church said the penalties could take away his aggressiveness.

“Coach (Jason Garrett) told me to keep doing what I'm doing and keep coming downhill and sooner or later you'll catch one in bounds," Church said.
