That was because they had to dig out from the hole they put themselves in by kicking the can with the contracts like Romo, Witten, etc.

It is one thing to pay big contracts, it is another to use them to mortgage the future and create tons of dead money.
That's true but we could always kick the can down the road to sign big name free agents. We just choose not to currently.

You're still rewarded for drafting well, though.

Personally I'd rather not see a soft cap like the NBA where you get into a bunch of trades based on dumping bad contracts, etc.

Bottom line, this team has more than enough talent to win it all right now.
You can tweak that as well by allowing more buy-outs, though.

Not as much as you should be.

Look at the Cowboys current situation. Just because they hit home runs on Dak, Zeke, their offensive linemen, Jaylon, and D-Law now they're in a tough position where they have to choose which players will be paid and which will be allowed to walk. And for the sake of argument lets assume Cooper was drafted by the Cowboys as well. That's a lot of money & salary cap space tied up into a relatively small portion of the roster. Under the current system unless a few of these guys are willing to be paid below market value....I certainly wouldn't if I were them....we stand a good chance of losing a couple of really good players. All because we hit on a lot of draft picks in a 5 year window.

Which is why I've always advocated for a system that truly rewards teams for drafting well. One that allows teams to re-sign FAs who they drafted while having only 75% of the salaries from those players count against the cap. Something along those lines.

If Dak is smart he'll go the Brady way, if you win a SB as QB of the Cowboys he'll more than make up for it in Deals with Nike, Adidas, etc.

He won't go that far because he actually needs the money I'm sure. But I could see Dak giving a small discount. Dude doesn't want to leave Dallas and I'm sure he is more of a team player than most NFL QBs.

No but he doesn't have a wife making 40 mil a year already. Relatively speaking he has more need than Brady.

So he gets 5/140/80 Sb guaranteed. When all is said and done he still has 40 of those 80, any decent portfolio should give him at least 6% return, that's 2.4mill a year 200k a month... NOT counting all the other deals he'll get for being America's team QB.
I think he'd be able to manage, with that as his first big contract...

Shit... if someone lives within "realistic" means and manages their money properly, even half that would provide for a comfortable life.

And he'll likely be in the HOF and get endorsement deals long after he retires from football. Probably a cushy network job too.

That is exactly the point why he should go the Brady way, his "rep" is about being a winner, not because of his passing and the only way to keep that up is with a great team around him. If he starts taking up huge parts of the cap, his supporting cast will start to go down as will his winning and he'll be another "gimmick QB that the league figured out"...
