Cowboys' Jason Hatcher, sackless for two games, feels the effect of teams paying attention to him

After getting a sack in each of the first three games, Jason Hatcher has failed to reach the quarterback in the last two.

He figures teams have figured out he is one of the Cowboys’ best pass rushers.

“Yeah, it’s getting kind of frustrating,” he said Monday at Valley Ranch. “It’s tough when guys kind of find out who you are, what you can do. You get more double teams. But I got to find a way to put myself in a better situation so I can create one-on-ones and go out there and win them and get to the quarterback.”

Hatcher gave Peyton Manning credit for not holding the ball long, like Philip Rivers the week before.

But he said it doesn’t let the Cowboys defense off the hook for not getting sacks. They got to Rivers only once in San Diego.

“You know, teams did a good job of scheming us, double-teaming us, chipping us, stuff like that. But it’s no excuse,” Hatcher said. “I’m not making excuses at all. We got to go out there and get it done. We got to go out there and pressure the quarterback. I got to find a way to split the double team when they do it. I got to go out and affect the quarterback.

“That’s what they pay us to do. That’s what I got to do.”

Nope.

While we were coming up with colorful nicknames for guys like Selvie and Hayden, it didn't take long for opponents to figure out they weren't much to truly be worried about.

Going sackless for two games isn't exactly breaking news for a DT.

Jason Hatcher getting used to double teams

October, 9, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – Since Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware entered the NFL in 2005 he has had to deal with double teams from opposing offenses. For Jason Hatcher, the experience is a little new.

That’s what they pay us to do. That’s what I got to do.”

Hatcher had a sack in each of the Cowboys’ first three games and eight quarterback pressures. In the last two games -- losses to the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos -- Hatcher has only three quarterback pressures and no sacks.

The Cowboys have just one sack as a team in the last two weeks. Chargers quarterbackPhilip Rivers and Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has thrown 69 passes since George Selvie dropped Rivers for a loss in the second quarter.

“Yeah, it’s getting kind of frustrating,” Hatcher said. “It’s tough when guys kind of find out who you are, what you can do. You get more double teams. But I got to find a way to put myself in a better situation so I can create one-on-ones and go out there and win them and get to the quarterback.”

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been sacked seven times in four games. The Cowboys sacked him four times in two games last season.
