Fans Accost Matt Schaub At His Home

October 8, 2013 9:28 PM

A source close to law enforcement told The Fred and Ted Show late Tuesday evening that Houston Police were contacted by the NFL after fans approached Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub at his home and berated him for his recent poor play.

No arrests were made.

“A fan went to his house and told him off,” said the source, adding that another person “took pictures of his family,” which were allegedly posted on Facebook. Fortunately, neither Schaub nor anyone in his family was hurt.

The irate fans left on their own accord before police could respond, and it’s believed Schaub and the Texans contacted NFL Security which asked for assistance from the Houston Police Department after the incident, according to the source.

Schaub has been under intense scrutiny following the team’s disastrous 2-3 start which has included the much maligned quarterback throwing a Pick-Six interception in an NFL-record four consecutive games. The Texans return home to Reliant Sunday at noon when they welcome the St. Louis Rams to town.

That's something I wish Cowboy fans would do more of.

Sure it's classless but I'd love it if they made these SOBs uncomfortable instead of cheering them like rock stars.

Especially the Jones. Jerry wouldn't be able to walk the streets of NY or Philly if he were operating those clubs, at least not comfortably. They'd make his life a living hell instead of treating him like the Pope like Cowboys fans do.

Let me clarify, I'm not advocating illegally entering a players home or place of employment because that could get you shot and killed especially here in Texas.

I'd just be happy if they stopped giving them (Jerry & Stephen) the rock star treatment at games, training camps, and during chance encounters on the street.

Glad you did this because it is psychotic to go to the guy's home, burn his jersey etc.

It's a sport. Yell and scream at the TV, from the stands and harass them on Twitter like a normal person.

Yea, that's pretty pathetic.

Everyone here hates the guy, and I get that, but I love how it's bringing out the worst in an already shitty fanbase. They love to talk shit about Cowboys fans, but I don't recall any in Dallas burning Romo's jersey or showing up the guy's house to take pics of his family.

Stay classy, Houston.

I remember plenty of fans burning Romo's jersey a few years back. The were posted on Youtube. But that's about as far as it goes with Dallas fans.

What is wrong with people? This football stuff is juuuuust for fun. Let's not make it the center of our life.

What's next, collecting money for a billboard that calls for his firing?

I'm all for people harassing Jerry Jones up to the absolute limit of the law.

And if someone wants to be a martyr and go further than that, I wouldn't blame them.

NFL Security responds after fan incident at Schaub home

By Gregg Rosenthal
Around The League Editor

NFL V.P. of security Jeff Miller confirmed Wednesday to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport that the league was contacted after an incident at the home of Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub involving a fan.

"This is a little unusual in that we don't normally have fans acting in this way, going to a players residence that sort of thing," Miller said. "In this case, Monday afternoon, a vehicle pulled into his driveway, an unidentified individual yelled obscenities. The police department is involved. We've been in contact with them as we normally would for anything like this. And because its a team issue, they have a security director, we work with them.

"In this case, they'll be working closely with the police department. But it's going to be investigated and handled seriously by Houston Police Department."

Fred Davis of CBS Radio 610 in Houston first reported that reported Schaub was confronted at his home by a fan. Houston Police announced Wednesday morning that police were not called to the home. A family member reported seeing a suspicious male taking pictures in the driveway, police said. No one was arrested or harmed.

Miller explained that the league will coordinate with team security to provide extra support because this story is now in the public eye. He also said that security can be provided for Schaub's family when he is traveling and they "don't need to be subjected to things like this."

This depressing incident adds to an uncertain week around the Texans. Coach Gary Kubiak left the door open to replace Schaub as the team's starting quarterback when Kubiak last spoke with the media. T.J. Yates is the team's backup.

Kubiak took the rare step of addressing the entire team in a meeting early Wednesday morning.

They should have kept BJ Symons on the roster. He would have pro bowls by now.

As it turns out, there was no angry mob at Schaub’s

Posted by Darin Gantt on October 9, 2013, 11:26 AM EDT

The story about angry fans outside Texans quarterback Matt Schaub’s house was a good one, a perfect narrative around which to comment on the importance of sports in our lives and fan behavior in general.

The only problem: It wasn’t true.

The Houston Police Department is sending out word that the story is not as it was first conveyed.

“Contrary to some reports, there was not a group of ‘angry fans’ outside the Schaub residence on Monday,” the department said in a statement sent out via Twitter. “A family member reported seeing a suspicious male in the driveway of the residence taking pictures. Police were not called to the home. No other information to release at this time.”

While the idea of a pitchfork- and torch-wielding mob furious about four straight weeks of pick-sixes didn’t turn out to be true, the fact that the story was so easy to believe might be the most depressing part of the whole chapter.
