Giants lose Andre Brown to broken leg

Posted by Michael David Smith on August 29, 2013, 9:42 PM EDT

In the fourth game of the preseason, every team hopes most of all to avoid any significant injuries. The New York Giants were not that lucky.

Giants running back Andre Brown suffered a broken leg in the second quarter of the Giants’ preseason finale against the Patriots, the team has announced.

Brown suffered the injury when he was tackled late in the second quarter. Giants coach Tom Coughlin will surely face plenty of questions about why Brown was still in the game at that point.

The Giants expected Brown to play an important role in their offense this year, splitting time with David Wilson at running back. Losing Brown at the end of the preseason is a significant blow.

Vince Wilfork has torn Achilles
By Mike Reiss | ESPNBoston.com

New England Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork has a torn right Achilles tendon and almost certainly is out for the season, a league source confirmed Monday morning.

The injury had been reported earlier by The Boston Globe.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick didn't shed any light on Wilfork's injury Monday morning, telling reporters on a conference call that the lineman was undergoing tests but he otherwise did not have information on the injury.

"I really don't know much right now," Belichick said, adding that with the late game Sunday and travel on Monday, he hadn't had a chance to talk to the team's medical staff.

Belichick indicated he might have more information later Monday.

"It'll all come together here at some point during the day," he said.

Wilfork left the Patriots' 30-23 win against the Atlanta Falcons in the first quarter with an ankle injury, limping off the field on the Falcons' first possession. He did not return.

He was later taken to the locker room on the back of a cart.

"He's a great player, we all know that, and he gives us great leadership," Belichick said. "He's a strong contributor on and off the field and in the locker room.

"We'll just have to see how things come together for him. Obviously if he's not there, everybody will have to pull a little bit more weight on their end."

Belichick was seen speaking with Wilfork's wife, Bianca, outside the team's locker room after the game.

Wilfork, one of the team's captains, is a perennial Pro Bowler and vital cog to the team's defense, particularly against the run. He had been added to the team's injury report this week for the first time as probable with a foot injury.

Over the last five seasons, the Patriots allow 4.1 yards per rush with Wilfork on the field, which is ninth-best in the NFL. When Wilfork is off the field, the Patriots rank last in the NFL in yards per rush allowed (5.0), according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Patriots have been thin at defensive tackle since training camp started in late July, in part because Armond Armstead opened on the non-football injury list after undergoing surgery for an infection. Armstead remains on the non-football injury list, leaving the Patriots with Wilfork, fellow veteran Tommy Kelly and rookies Joe Vellano (undrafted) and Chris Jones (sixth-round pick from the Houston Texans claimed on waivers) at defensive tackle.

Bradshaw to have season-ending surgery

By MICHAEL MAROT – AP Sports Writer - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 5:11 p.m. CDT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Colts running back Ahmad Bradshaw will miss the rest of this season after opting for neck surgery.

A person with knowledge of Bradshaw's medical options confirmed the decision Tuesday. The person requested anonymity because the Colts have not yet made the decision public.

Bradshaw was injured in Week 3 against San Francisco, but it's unclear when he was injured. He took a big hit on the opening series, continued to play, then was hurt again later when he ran into a linemen. Team trainers appeared to check his left shoulder on the sideline, but Bradshaw returned again and finished the game 19 carries for 95 yards, both season highs, and one touchdown.

The former Giants star signed with Indy in June after being released in a salary cap move.

They are going to be battling with the Jags for that #1 pick.

Matty Ice has his built in excuse for this year. People will just gloss over the 1-4 start before the injury bug hit though.

Calvin hasn't been putting up all that great of numbers anyway, but I just knew he would go off any time. I swear I can end a players career just by taking him in FF. :lol

Yeah my fantasy team is undefeated and now Julio Jones goes down with an injury and I'm forced to count on a scrub like Antonio Brown to carry my WR corp.
