Garrett says Cowboys had better spirit on defense versus Broncos than against Chargers

Jason Garrett says the Cowboys played with better spirit on defense against the Broncos than they did the week before against the Chargers.

“There was a relentless nature to how we played,” the Cowboys coach said Monday at Valley Ranch, asked to pick out any good things he saw in the defense, which gave up 51 points and 517 yards. “Sometimes people say, ‘What’s this guy talking about? They gave up 500 yards, they gave up 51 points, all of that.’ But when you watch the tape, we played better in that regard than we had the previous week. And that’s something you can identify as being something that’s good.”

The Cowboys gave up 17 points in the second half in the San Diego loss. Over the last six quarters, it’s 68 points and 744 yards allowed.

Garrett was encouraged that the Cowboys got the Broncos into third down. But of course, they allowed nine conversions out of 13.

“Getting them to third down was a positive thing,” Garrett said. “Obviously, not shutting them down like you want to is something that we’ve got to get better at. But I thought we rallied to the ball. I thought we covered a little more competitively than we did before, with the back end guys. Mo Claiborne played better than he did the week before. There were some good things that you look at on the tape. Overall, it’s not good enough.”

So what he's saying is that you didn't see guys like Carter jogging after surrendering a big play etc.

I guess that's like nice and stuff.

Wait a minute.....

Didn't he just say yesterday that there are no moral victories? It sure as hell sounds like he's propping these guys just for getting the Broncos to 3rd downs.

:lol

Getting them to third downs? They had 4 third down attempts as of the mid fourth quarter. I don't know the final count but they sure as hell weren't getting them to third downs in any meaningful way.

This spirit shit is the same Pollyanna bullshit that you'd hear Jerry pull.

They beat us to the point where we never stopped them. They put up 51 points. But hey, we played with spirit.

Retarded.

Garrett said he learned a lot from Phillips, here's yet another example of sunshine pumping.

Oh, well, at least he FINALLY figured out how to bench people who are underperforming, in his 6th year (counting the fact that he has had total control of at least the offense since 2008).

Baby steps.

Benched for what? A quarter or two? Last I saw Claiborne and Carter were on the field most of the day as the Broncos continually shoved the ball down our throats.

They just lost their starting spots. You expected them to make Claiborne inactive? Even I wouldn't be that silly.

I agree they are still useful players. What was Garrett supposed to do? Just not play them as though it is some sort of punishment for playing bad? I never want my head coach to bench a player in favor of a worse player.

Fire Garrett. That's 1 of the solutions. Not the main solution. But it's a start.
