Cowboys' poor pass D cracks record book

October, 7, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Monte Kiffin's defense has already matched a dubious NFL record.

The Dallas Cowboys are the fourth team in NFL history to allow three 400-yard passers, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

It took the Cowboys only five games to accomplish this feat. Eli Manning threw for 450 yards and four touchdowns in the Cowboys’ Week 1 win over the New York Giants. Philip Rivers threw for 401 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Chargers to a Week 4 win over Dallas. And Peyton Manning threw for 414 yards and four scores in the Cowboys’ shootout loss Sunday to the Denver Broncos.

“Defensively, we were just terrible," straight-shooting linebacker Sean Lee said after Sunday's 51-48 loss to Denver. "There is no way around it. We were just terrible across the board. Fifty-one points -- unbelievable. We need to take a look at ourselves, visually and collectively and find a way because we let the team down.”

Not that it will cheer up Lee, but the list of teams who allowed three 400-yard passers is actually not bad company for the Cowboys. The 1986 New York Jets, the first team in NFL history to allow three 400-yard passers, went 10-6 and won a playoff game. The 2011 Green Bay Packers, who had the league’s highest-scoring offense, went 15-1 but got upset in their only playoff game. The 2012 New Orleans Saints are the black sheep of the bunch, finishing 7-9 and firing their defensive coordinator after setting an NFL record for yards allowed in a season.

The Saints happened to hire Rob Ryan, the defensive coordinator who was made the scapegoat for the Cowboys’ 8-8 campaign last season.

Like Kiffin’s Cowboys, Ryan’s Saints set a season high for points allowed Sunday. The 2-3 Cowboys gave up 51; the 5-0 Saints allowed 18.

Many wanted Ryan gone. Can't think of any who was clamoring for Kiffin and the Tampa 2 to be the replacement though. I love how Jerry takes a bad situation....and makes it worse.

Had the stupid fuck been patient, Ray Horton was soon to be available.

But he was in a hurry to scapegoat somebody and had the advice from Larry fucking Lacewell to hire Kiffin burning a hole in his pocket.

Lacewell and Switzer just will not go away. Jerry constantly turns to these two idiots over scouts and others in the organization.

I wonder how many teams have given up 400+ more than 3 games of the year cause that's where we're headed.

You know what is both sad and amazing at the same time?

Since we entered the 2000's, it seems like no matter who the coordinator is or who the personnel are, our defense has always had the exact same problems.

The middle of the field has always been an issue.

Pressuring the QB has always been an issue.

Forcing turnovers has always been an issue. (although this year we appear to be doing well here)

The backs catching passes have been an issue.

The defenses have always been average with the exception of a short spurt in late 2008 and late 2009.

How is this possible? I mean, we have to be absolutely cursed for this shit to keep happening this way.

In 2006, I believe the Cowboys set some type of team record for most yards allowed or whatever in that December collapse under Parcells/Zimmer.

In 2010, we had the worst defense in team history or whatever. Then Rob Ryan's 2012 defense makes a run at that. And now it looks like Monte is taking his stab at the Cowboys record book.

How is it possible that not even through sheer randomness that we just cannot put together a truly good defense?

It gets better/worse. Minimum 30 attempts, Romo is the only QB to lose a game with a 140+ rating regardless of TDs/yards. And now twice.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

No DL pressure. Demarcus Where?

A bunch of nobodies and undrafted yucks shitting the bed in crunchtime.

But by golly, that Carr and Claiborne sure are good corners. We got something there that could get us somewhere. :lipsmack:

What is this, a rhetorical question?

We build from the back, inwards.

It's wrong.

That's why we don't have a good defense, ever. We don't ever have a front that can control the line consistently.
