Cowboys work out DT Drake Nevis

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys worked out defensive tackle Drake Nevis on Thursday but have not decided whether they will add him to the roster.

Nevis was cut by the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday. The Chargers claimed Nevis after he was among the Indianapolis Colts' final cuts.

In 14 games over two seasons with the Colts, Nevis, 6-foot-1, 310 pounds, had 35 tackles and a sack. He was a third-round pick by the Colts out of LSU in 2011.

The Cowboys have two defensive linemen on the 53-man roster and signed defensive tackle David Carter on Tuesday and released Landon Cohen.

I'd be somewhat pleased if we signed him, I think he'd be a good fit in this defense.

Watching the KC game again and focusing on Cohen's snaps, he looked like a fire hydrant trying to run with no quickness. We will probably churn that role again after we realize that Carter isn't much better. Nevis could be next.

I love it. Never know where you might find your next Selvie or Hayden. Might as well keep looking and keep churning.

I like the move even more if we cut Jerome Long. He was blown up at least once yesterday.

I liked the Selvie signing alot when we did it but I like this one even more. I thought he was a perfect fit for this scheme coming out of college but unfortunately for him the Colts switched to a 3-4 the year after they drafted him I believe, and he doesn't fit that scheme at all.

I have no idea why the Chargers tried to make him fit in their 3-4 but it's whatever.

Anyway, his junior and senior years at LSU this guy had a combined 24 TFL, 10 sacks and was 1st team All-SEC as a senior, I think we might have something here.

Dallas Cowboys sign Drake Nevis
By Todd Archer

IRVING, Texas -- Five days after working him out, the Dallas Cowboys signed defensive tackle Drake Nevis on Tuesday, according to a source.

To make room for Nevis, the Cowboys released defensive lineman Jerome Long, who was among the team’s final cuts but re-signed on Sept. 7 and played in the first three games. Long did not record a tackle in limited playing time.

Nevis was cut last week by the San Diego Chargers, the Cowboys’ foe this week. He was a third-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2011 and in 14 games over two seasons he had 35 tackles and a sack.

I didn't know much about him before Dallas brought him on board but he's looked like an excellent addition so far. At minimum a solid rotational guy who can get to the QB. Hayden seems to show up too. No idea how he has graded out in the games so far but just watching he seems to be doing a respectable job.

I liked it because I remembered when he was being talked about as a top 10-15 pick at one point during his time at USF, he fell off a bit as his college career went on but I knew he had talent and could potentially be coached up. I feel the same way about Nevis, he wasn't ever talked about as that high of a pick but I liked him as a 2nd/3rd rounder when he came out and thought he was a perfect fit in this scheme as a 1 gap penetrating tackle.

Whats the price though?
Shouldn't be much of anything. He has 1 career sack and has played in like a grand total of 6 game over the last two seasons. He did get a sack against the Chiefs but that is basically all he has done at this point in his career.

Not saying the player isn't any good, just that his own team must not hold him in high regards so the trade value shouldn't be much.

Cowboys sign DT Drake Nevis, release Jerome Long

The Cowboys continue to churn the bottom of their 53-player roster. They worked out defensive tackle Drake Nevis last week and liked him enough to sign him Tuesday.

Nevis replaces Jerome Long on the roster. The Cowboys released Long, who appeared in the first three games but had no stats. Long played 27 plays Sunday against the Rams.

Nevis was a third-round choice of the Colts in 2011 and played in 14 games with them in two seasons, making 35 tackles and a sack. The Colts released the LSU product Aug. 31, and the Chargers claimed him off waivers. The Chargers released him Sept 17 after he was inactive the first two games.

The Cowboys are without starting defensive tackle Jay Ratliff for at least three more games. Ratliff is on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from a groin injury.
