Vince Gilligan said recently that he's surprised and a little upset that people are still pulling for Walt. He thinks he made him a sympathetic character for too long.

He also basically said he hates the character now. He knows how it ends though so maybe there is a little bit of that going on, stuff we haven't seen yet.

To me it was telling Jesse about Jane while he is being pulled away thinking he was going to die. Kicking a dog on the way out...

That was a self preservation thing. Walt knew Gale was about to replace him, and that he and Jesse were gonna be snuffed out. Gale had to go. It's not like Walt did it to be spiteful. I think just watching Jane die was much more heinous. Also the poisoning of Brock. It was total manipulation of Jesse and the people he loved.
