Safety first: Are Cowboys close to moving rookie J.J. Wilcox into the starting lineup?

J.J. Wilcox got some work with the first team in Thursday’s practice.

Is this a sign that the rookie safety is moving closer to a spot in the starting lineup?

“Well, you’re only one snap away when you’re a backup,’’ Wilcox said. “With that being said, I think I am.

“I continue to keep preaching it, be ready when my number’s called. It’s a great team. I’m going in a great direction, so I just want to be ready.”

Will Allen has been the team’s starting strong safety the first two games. He is one of one of three players to record an interception for the Cowboys. He is tied with cornerback Brandon Carr with two passes knocked down and tied for third in tackles (11) with free safety Barry Church.

He has been good. But Wilcox has more speed and a greater upside.

Allen was guarded in his response about Wilcox getting work with the first team in Thursday’s practice, saying it’s a business and those were questions for head coach Jason Garrett and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. Wilcox said he has no idea if he will start against St. Louis on Sunday.

“You know Will’s a 10-year vet,’’ Wilcox said. “He’s earned his stripes.

“A young pup like me just has to come in and help pick up the slack and help when he’s not able to.’’

And it is more about Allen sucking than Wilcox being the stud you think he is.
It's funny, every team Allen has ever played for realized this and yet the Cowboys signed him to be their starter.

Oh, I agree. Its just that with a little time-in-grade, I think Wilcox will be quite solid. They just need to play him. As much as possible.

Well we signed him to be on the team - apparently he won the job in camp. I don't know that starter was a foregone conclusion.

With Barry Church killing everyone we just need a FS who won't screw things up.

You mean a career backup/scrub isn't magically turning into a formidable starter for us?

Shocking.

He didn't win that job. He didn't even have to play in the first preseason game because he was held out like most of our other starters (Except for a select few starters battling for starting jobs). We handed Allen the job by default by not signing anyone and basically having him backed up by rookies.

Tomato, potato. I bet if we actually had Wilcox out there now biting on pump fakes and running around like a crazy person we'd understand how Allen won the job. Allen sucks but he may be our best option right now.

We should play Wilcox at this point. At least he has a chance to get better.

J.J. Wilcox moves into starting role
September, 20, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- There was all sorts of praise coming from Cowboys coach Jason Garrett on Friday regarding rookie safety J.J. Wilcox.

It appears Wilcox will move into the starting lineup for Sunday's Week 3 game against the St. Louis Rams. If that occurs, Wilcox will become the first rookie to start at safety since Patrick Watkins did it in 2006 when he started nine regular-season games.

Wilcox's journey is interesting.

At Georgia Southern he played wide receiver and running back, before switching to safety his senior year. Wilcox started 13 games and earned first-team All-Southern Conference honors. The Cowboys liked his potential as a playmaker and drafted him in the third round, 80th overall.

"Well, we like what he’s done and we drafted him where we drafted him for a reason, and that was a concern (lack of safety experience) of ours just really based on biography more than anything else," Garrett said. "It wasn’t anything we necessarily saw on tape that would be a concern for us. He was a small-school guy, didn’t have a lot of experience playing the position in college, but since playing here he’s demonstrated the ability to pick things up quickly. He’s an instinctive player. He has a good feel for the game and a good feel for being around the football and making plays."

While in camp, Wilcox made several key plays in practice, but he left camp for 10 days when his mother, Marshell, died after a long bout with Lupus. Wilcox returned and felt behind, but led the Cowboys in tackles in the preseason and picked up an interception.

"Anytime you stay a day away from football, it puts you weeks behind," Wilcox said. "So I had to catch up mentally and physically; Just get back into shape and get back mentally, just getting back into a groove and getting a feel for it and catching up with the schemes. Coach (Monte) Kiffin does a great job with me day in and day out staying after (practice), and it’s coming along pretty good."

Wilcox took his mother's death hard and was worried about his father, James, and sister, Lesha, whom he left behind in Cairo, Ga., to deal with family issues while he returned to the Cowboys. But Wilcox said dad and sister are fine and they saw him play in the Week 1 game against the New York Giants.

There's a chance his father and sister will come to Sunday's game, but Lesha has a cheerleading competition to attend.

"She's seen me play," Wilcox said of his mother. "She's had a chance to see her son actually make it to what I've always wanted to do. That’s the main thing, and I have to keep it living and just make her happy and do what she wanted me to do."

I'd absolutely try that If I had Tavon Austin. Of course they also have Sam Bradford (yay for Dallas).

J.J. Wilcox set be first rookie to start at safety for Cowboys since 1996; Garrett says he’s ready

Coach Jason Garrett hasn't fully admitted it and rookie safety J.J. Wilcox did his to best play coy with the media.

But the third-round pick from tiny Georgia Southern has worked with the starters alongside strong safety Barry Church in practice and is target to place veteran Will Allen with the first team in Sunday's game against the Rams.

Vice-president Stephen Jones confirmed on the radio Friday afternoon, however, that Wilcox will indeed start, becoming the first rookie to start at safety for the Cowboys since 1996.

"He did get some snaps with the first team," Garrett said. "He has done a nice job. He is getting better and better over the course of training camp and the early part of the season. He is a good football player. Will Allen has done some nice things for us as well. We are just getting those guys ready to play."

That Wilcox is on the verge of being a starter for the Cowboys is even more interesting when you consider his background. He played running back and receiver at tiny Georgia Southern for three years before moving to safety as a senior. And even after being drafted by the Cowboys, he was forced to miss 10 days in training camp following the death of his mother, Marshell, thus slowing his development.

"Yeah, but it’s all about what you dream of," Wilcox said when asked if the he's surprised by the opportunity so early. "When u get a chance to finally do it, you got to be ready, it’s a dream come true, a small town kid, a small time school coming to the big show and this is what you look for what you dream for."

Garrett admits to having had concerns about Wilcox's background but that was before he showed up. Since then he been nothing but impressive with his attitude, instincts, athleticism and playmaking skills. He said Wilcox has certainly progressed enough for an opportunity to start.

"Well, we like what he’s done and we drafted him where we drafted him for a reason and that was a concern of ours just really based on biography more than anything else," Garrett said. "It wasn’t anything we necessarily saw on tape that would be a concern for us. He was a small school guy, didn’t have a lot of experience playing the position in college but since playing here he’s demonstrated the ability to pick things up quickly. He’s an instinctive player. He has a good feel for the game and a good feel for being around the football and making plays."

Despite missing ten days in training camp one preseason game dealing with mother's death, Wilcox still led the Cowboys in tackles during the preseason. He also had an interception. But he said he had some making up to do.

Garrett said Wilcox's development has been rapid.

"He has improved a great deal," Garrett said. "He played really well in the spring. He had a good start to camp, then his mom passed away. That took him away from what we were doing here and rightfully so. It took him a little time coming back from that. Those are difficult things to do deal with. but he has found his stride again in the last few weeks. He has done a lot of good things."

The decision to move Wilcox into the start's role is also timely considering what lies ahead for the Cowboys. They play against the pass-happy Rams on Sunday, followed by the Chargers and quarterback Phillip Rivers and the Broncos and Peyton Manning.

Wilcox is faster than Allen. He covers better and plays better in space as well as being a ferocious hitter. Church said the rookie will bring more play-making skills to the secondary that will be under fire the next few weeks.

"His coverage skills are great and his hitting across the middle is going to have receivers scared and have alligator arms," Church said of Wilcox. "He brings that physical presence to the secondary. It should help create a lot of turnovers and be a boost."

There is a chance is Wilcox's father James and sister Lesha might be on hand for his first start on Sunday _ if they can find the time following his sister's cheerleading competition.

Certainly his thoughts before the game will return to his mother, whom he has called his inspiration for making the league. But there will be no regrets about her missing out on his momentous achievement.

"She's seen me play," Wilcox said of his mother. "She's had a chance to see her son actually make it to what I've always wanted to do. That’s the main thing, and I have to keep it living and just make her happy and do what she wanted me to do."

Briefly

* Receiver Dez Bryant practiced fully on Friday and said he is ready to roll for the Rams game after being limited earlier in the week with a back injury.

* Defensive end Anthony Spencer missed practice on Friday as he continues to manage his rehab and return from preseason knee surgery. Coach Jason Garrett said Spencer played more snaps last week against the Chiefs than anticipated and they are just being smart about his work load in practice. Spencer is listed as questionable on the injury report and will be a game-time decision.

* Defensive end DeMarcus Ware is 1.5 sacks away from surpassing the late Harvey Martin as the Cowboys all-time leading sacker.

Ware has 113 heading into Sunday's game against the Rams. Martin ended his career with 114.

Ware said he doesn't know much about Martin but plans to learn about the legendary Cowboys pass rusher who was the co-MVP of Super Bowl XII.

"I’m not a big historian, but when you have an opportunity to break someone’s record, it’s always a blessing so you need to know the reason why you’re doing it and you need to know about that person," Ware said. "I need to make sure I learn about him.

Didn't Pat Watkins start as a rookie in 2006?

I swear these DFW writers are dummies who got it made because they constantly get their facts wrong.

I equate us starting him to the Browns trading Richardson. We've essentially given up on the season.

I did not see Allen make enough mistakes that he should lose his job. I also did not see enough from Wilcox in the preseason that makes me comfortable starting him.

It must have something to do with the coverages in the middle of the field where they need more range. I just hope Wilcox is prepared.

And if he fails badly, we might have another Pat Watkins on our hands where he loses his job and confidence and becomes a career special teamer.
