Cowboys back in developing a quarterback stage
September, 1, 2013
By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

One of the positives regarding the Cowboys roster moves of the last 24 hours regards quarterback Alex Tanney.

The Cowboys signed Tanney to the practice squad on Sunday afternoon after he cleared waivers. Tanney completed 40 of 73 passes for 423 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

After the Cowboys released Stephen McGee in 2011 finding a young quarterback to groom for the future didn't appear to be a concern. This summer, Nick Stephens and Tanney were the Nos. 3 and 4 quarterbacks in camp and eventually Tanney moved past Stephens because of his strong arm and his ability to finally command the offense after missing the offseason program. It seems as if Tanney's skill set gives the Cowboys confidence they want to develop him.

One of Tanney's best attributes is his arm strength in terms of throwing deep passes. Several times in the preseason, Tanney wasn't afraid to let it fly with pressure in his face. Coach Jason Garrett said he was pleased with Tanney's progress over the summer.

Will Tanney become a starting quarterback? Who knows? But the Cowboys' current starter is an undrafted player from Eastern Illinois in Romo.

Tanney was beaten up pretty good in his last series of the preseason on Thursday night against the Houston Texans. He was sacked three times, four times really but a penalty negated the play, and still he got the Cowboys within field goal range.

"It looked like he kept his composure, moved around, kept his eyes up the field," Garrett said of Tanney's efforts. "But just didn't get into much of a rhythm throughout the football game."

Tanney's progress is tied to Kyle Orton, the No. 2 quarterback. Orton is signed through 2014 and he's scheduled to make $3.2 million in base salary next season. It will be interesting to see if the Cowboys let Orton and Tanney battle for the No. 2 job next year.

Orton played pretty good during the preseason and while fans were upset at his two interception performance at Arizona, he did make a nice touchdown pass the previous week at Oakland and looked good in the Hall of Fame game.

Tanney will be the scout team quarterback for this team in 2013 and if he continues to progress he could challenge Orton in 2014.
----------------

Putting this schlub Tanney on the PS is hardly "developing" a QB.

This is just to keep Garrett and Wilson from having to do it as they did at times last year.

Smith relayed the following story that caught our attention: “I heard Jerry Jones say … ‘If you told me I could get Johnny Manziel for the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys next year, I’d say tell me where to sign and how much it will cost me.’”

“Although we’ve just signed Romo, there’s a time when you start at quarterback, preparing for the future,” Jones explained. “We can’t talk about, I’m forbidden, from league rules of talking at all about an undrafted player, a player that still has eligibility. That has as much to do with your competitive aspect of other teams not liking that. In other words, what are you doing? Are you trying to recruit? Are you getting ahead of things?"

“I can’t talk about him but, gosh, do I enjoy watching him and I am enjoying our Heisman Trophy winner.”

"Back" in developing?

When did we ever enter the developing stage with anyone? When Parcells was here with Romo?

It doesn't matter where we are picking, if Manziel is available we are 1000000% taking him, especially if Garrett is fired.

And if Manziel is within trade up distance, say, within 5 spots of our pick, I think we're trading up for him, and I think those odds increase exponentially should we miss the playoffs.

We're going to be seeing a whole lot of this in the near future:

I don't like the guy, but if he lands in the right situation he might be very good.

I'm all for drafting him but have no faith at all in Garrett to use him correctly

I don't think Garrett will be around for long if we were to draft him, that's assuming Garrett even makes it past this year which is a very risky proposition considering that I think he's gone if we miss the playoffs.

Is Manziel good at anything besides running like a chicken with its head cut off?
