Anthony Spencer unlikely to practice today

IRVING, Texas -- With preparations starting this week for the regular-season opener against the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys starting defensive end Anthony Spencer isn’t expected to practice Monday according to a source.

Spencer hasn’t practiced since July 21 when a knee problem, which surfaced during the offseason workouts, acted up during a conditioning test.

Spencer had minor knee surgery July 25 with the hope he would play at least one preseason game. When that didn’t happen, the goal was to push Spencer to play in the opener Sept. 8.

But with the opener seven days away, the clock is ticking on whether or not he will play against the Giants.

Following the Cowboys’ final preseason game against the Houston Texans last week, defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said if Spencer participates in the opener, he wasn’t sure how many plays he would have him available for.

If Spencer can’t play or is limited during the Giants game, expect George Selvie to take over at defensive end.

Selive was signed July 24, the day before Spencer’s surgery, as insurance for the defensive line.

The Cowboys' defensive line, once considered a strength among team officials, is dealing with injuries with the potential loss of Spencer, and defensive tackle Jay Ratliff out the first six weeks of the regular season on the physically unable to perform list because of a groin injury.

The Cowboys also traded defensive tackle Sean Lissemore on Sunday to the San Diego Chargers for a 2015 seventh-round pick.

Well it stands to reason if the guy couldn't even fricking walk a few weeks ago, he's going to be in football shape now?

George Selvie. Jesus.
