Matt Johnson headed to injured reserve

August, 31, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- If the Cowboys are ever going to see Matt Johnson play in a regular-season game it will not happen in 2013.

The Cowboys placed the safety on injured reserve with a foot injury suffered Aug. 4 against Miami in the Hall of Fame Game. A fourth-round draft pick in 2012, Johnson did not play in a game last year because of recurring hamstring injuries and was eventually placed on injured reserve.

A player is not eligible for the injured reserve tag with the ability to return unless he spends one day on the active roster. With decisions to make across the roster, the Cowboys felt they could not hold a spot for Johnson for a day after holding one for him most of last season.

The Cowboys have informed Alex Tanney, Anthony Armstrong, Edawn Coughman, Jakar Hamilton and Taylor Reed of their release, but have a number of moves to make before they need to reach the 53-man limit by 5 p.m. CT Saturday.

Retarded take. If you thought the player had something and he isn't going to take up a roster spot, then stash him away for one more year. It's not like he's going to provide cap relief.

The Cowboys "gave up" on Jimmy Smith because Jerry Jones was a cheap bitch in the early salary cap days and Barry Switzer didn't know talent.

Soon thereafter Smith made one heck of an enemy: his boss. At the start of the 1993 season Cowboys owner Jerry Jones placed Smith on the reserve/nonfootball-injury list, meaning Dallas wasn't obligated to pay his $350,000 salary. Smith filed a grievance through the NFL Players Association, which claimed a hit he had taken in an exhibition game had contributed to the appendicitis and that he hadn't received adequate treatment from the team when the symptoms of the condition appeared. In December of that year an arbitrator ruled that the appendicitis was football-related, and Smith received his salary and a playoff share.

"I understood it from Jerry's point of view as a businessman, but I felt it was adding insult to injury? Smith says. "What's $350,000 to him? He had a team of lawyers, some of the best in the country, and I'm sure he spent more than $350,000 in legal fees. You don't beat Jerry Jones and get away with it."

In July 1994 Jones, who declined comment about the episode, called Smith into his office and told him he'd be released if he didn't take a pay cut. Smith, figuring he was doomed in Dallas anyway, refused, ending his Cowboys career with two Super Bowl rings and no catches. Also at that meeting was coach Barry Switzer, who had taken over four months earlier. Recalls Smith, "Barry said, 'I hear they call you Silk [a nickname from high school]. I haven't seen that yet.' Half of me wanted to punch him, and the other half wanted to bust out laughing."

You have basically paid two years of salary to a guy that has participated in what, a quarter of the Hall of Fame game and a handful of practices?

This is saving face with him and a last ditch attempt to not admit failure.

Looking back at that draft, it could be almost as bad as the 2009 draft when it is all said and done.

It is looking like a one player draft, and even Claiborne is looking like a drama queen.

Crawford will be coming off an Achilles. Wilber isn't impressing. Mr. Glass here. Coale is gone. Hanna may end up being the John Phillips of the class. And McSurdy can't play.

Wow.

Wish I could say I was surprised.

Again, what has he done that's so damn impressive and that warrants him being allowed to hang around for another season?

As Booze mentioned, in 2 years the guy has maybe 3 weeks of practice under his belt.

He played at a small school against sub par competition.

Matt Johnson isn't hurt. He's healthy and we're all hurt.

I just blew your mind right there.

Haven't you heard? It's too early to judge a draft.

Do I remember much rejoicing in the War Room when he dropped (snicker) to the 4th round, or am I thinking of some other bust they celebrated?

Don't know about Johnson but they were pigs in shit when they took David Arkin in the 4th. Smiles and high fives around the war room, as if they stole him at that spot. Yeah, that has worked out well.
