Jerry Jones said Jay Ratliff won't practice next week and doesn't know if he will be ready for opener

When defensive tackle Jay Ratliff was placed on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp with a strained hamstring, the Cowboys termed it a short time injury and said he would be back in a couple of weeks.

Two weeks has turned into more than a month and now Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn't know if the former Pro Bowl defensive tackle will be ready for the season opener.

Jones is certain Ratliff will not return to practice next week and has no way to assess past that, raising the possibility that he could open the season on the physically unable to perform list.

"There’s areas that none of us know other than to see how it’s feeling on a day-to-day basis and where his strength is," Jones said. "Not necessary how it is feeling. Ratliff will play on one leg. He will. There’s no question about that. He’ll do it, and do it competitively. But the bottom line is that we just don’t know how he’s going to measure up with the symptoms and how wise that is to play him or not play him and get more out of him later on down the road."

Jones said Ratliff is challenged in rehabbing from the hamstring injury because he is also recovering from off-season groin surgery. The latter was one of several injuries that sidelined him for ten games last season.

"We are really having to feel our way," Jones said. "We have to keep an eye on his strength. All of it down there needs strengthening. Anything down there that needs strengthening. You got some issues. You might strengthen one too much and not have the other strong enough. It keeps the other from firing. The word firing is appropriate here. We are not ready. At this junction, he is not ready to get out there."

Ratliff's presence was key in the team's decision to switch from the 3-4 to the 4-3 defense under Monte Kiffin. He was expected to thrive in the under tackle position after being beaten down the last few years as a nose tackle in a 3-4. His numbers have declined in each of the last four years because of wear and tear and injuries.

Now the Cowboys don't even know when Ratliff will get on the field.

Aside from Jerry Jones, who didn't see this coming?

You reap what you sow.

I'm not even angry. I was expecting this.

Must be nice to collect a huge paycheck sitting in rehab somewhere.
Must be nice to collect a big paycheck while not doing shit on the football field for 3 years, failing to play in most of your games, and threatening the owner while also getting arrested for driving drunk.

If anyone is living a charmed life, it's this asshole.

'Expecting' Ratliff to do anything was your first mistake

Not only could Jay Ratliff miss the first game but the first six on PUP; Cowboys say it's a long season

There is a chance injured nose tackle Jay Ratliff not only misses the first game of season but the first six games as a member of the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett declined to comment directly when asked about Ratliff Monday, saying "We're just going to take it day by day."

However, Garrett echoed owner Jerry Jones when he talked about it being a long season and wanted Ratliff healthy for the bulk of it rather than just trying to get him on the field for the season opener.

Ratliff has been on the active/PUP list since the start of training camp because of hamstring and groin issues dating back to last season.

He suffered a pulled hamstring during pre-camp conditioning drills which complicated his recovery from hernia surgery last December. It was one of several injuries that sidelined him for 10 games last season.

Less than two weeks before the season opener, Ratliff appears no closer to returning to the field. The Cowboys had long held hope that he would be ready for the Giants game on Sept. 8 but he has yet to take his rehab to the place where a quick return is realistic.

Now they are hoping to get him back at some point this season.

“He does a lot of stuff in the weight room or by himself on the side with some of the guys that we have helping him with the rehab,” Garrett said. “Really the biggest thing with him is gaining some strength to get to the point where he can start doing some stuff on the field. With Jay we’re going to make sure he’s healthy and ready to go before we bring him back like we would do with any player.”

This really is turning comical. Hatcher is our only hope, and maybe Hayden as Carp pointed out above.

I am just amazed at how the tone has changed. It is like we have had absolutely zero grasp on how Ratliff has been progressing and it all just came to a head this week.

It screams complete mismanagement.

Don't draft a DT? We like what we have. Don't sign even an UDFA? We like what we have, it is a strength of the team. Thoughts about Ratliff coming back? Not worried.

Then boom, this week...okay, sooooo, ummm....hey, look over there....~running away~

It is easy to blame the player and call him a freeloading bum riding out Jerry's money. And I feel that way.

But a smart GM doesn't allow himself to be played in the first place. Honestly, they should be shaming his ass. But they won't as they allow a recovery from a sports hernia/hamstring injury to become what players with fully reconstructed knees have come back from sooner.

Complete damage control is my guess. And, once they couldn't deny it anymore it had to come out.

What are they supposed to do? Just dial up 1-800-Quick-Twitch. There weren't any DT's with quickness worthy of our roster. Totally not our teams fault.

Hey. It's a long season and stuff.

It's not like 6 games is almost 40% of the season or anything.
