Jones all but says Leary will start when he returns from knee surgery
BY TOM ORSBORN : Friday, August 23, 2013

DALLAS – Cowboys owner Jerry Jones all but said Ron Leary will start at left guard when he returns from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

Asked during an interview Friday on Dallas/Fort Worth’s KRLD-FM who his top five offensive linemen would be, Jones said rookie Travis Frederick at center, Mackenzy Bernadeu at right guard, Leary at left guard, Tyron Smith at left tackle and Doug Free at right tackle.

“Starting from the interior, I’d like to think that Leary when he returns (he would be in the group) – we do expect him to return back before the Giants (game),” Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News’ web site. “Frederick has had a top preseason. He’s everything that we had hoped he would be. He’s arguably in the top two of our offensive linemen. And then Bernadeau has come back, has had a lot of reps, played well against Arizona, having a good week of practice, so the interior guys, those three come to my mind.

“And I look at it as certainly Smith at left tackle and Free at right tackle. We got some good depth here. (Jermey) Parnell will get some playing (at right tackle) for the first time this weekend and probably get quite a bit this coming Thursday (against Houston in the preseason finale) as well. I’d call that our top five with a couple of guys that would be immediately behind them.”

With Leary and 2012 starting left guard Nate Livings out after knee surgery, the Cowboys are experimenting with Bernadeau at left guard, Free at right guard and Parnell at right tackle.

Regarding whether the Cowboys are serious about playing Free at guard, Jones said not to read too much into it, “because to spend a few reps at a different position is as common as the sun coming up,” but then added, “but the fact that we’re doing it says enough.”

Jones also cast doubt on whether Livings would be coming back anytime soon. Signed as a free agent before last season, Livings has had right knee surgery twice since February.

“You’d ask yourself, ‘Is there a degeneration in the knee, as opposed to a fix of an injury that comes back as good as new?’ I think he’s having some of that, a degenerations,” Jones said. “But that’s not uncommon at all at this point in his career, so a combination of those things puts a little guess work into as when he might be back.”

great that our non-football coach non-doctor supreme leader declares he will start by fiat. it's like he read football for dummies and thinks he's an expert.

Anyone bother to ask Garrett what he thought of Leary?

Oh, that's right...Jones decided to give an update while the RHG was looking for his balls.

Please.

Garrett would talk about him like he does about Arkin and Costa.

Works hard. Is trying. Blah blah blah.

All he can do when he doesn't have stroke.

Consensus, folks, consensus.

Jerry would never say anything that hasn't already been decided upon by the group. Stop being hung up on titles

To be fair Leary has played pretty well and he will help solidify the line if he picks up where he left off. He's certainly earned the job.

Dallas Cowboys plan to replace one starting OG with a degenerative knee with another OG with a degenerative knee?

If you listen closely to owner Jerry Jones – and can actually decipher his Arkansas dialect – the Dallas Cowboys plan to replace their starting left guard whom he says has a degenerative right knee with a starting left guard who has a degenerative left knee.

Say what?

Jones said Friday on KRLD-FM 105.3 that Nate Livings, who started every game at left guard for the Cowboys last season, has more problems with his right knee than just recovering from arthroscopic surgery Aug. 2.

Jones has said more than once this preseason that he believes left guard Ron Leary is a starter for the Cowboys. Leary, who has a degenerative disorder in his left knee, is still recovering from arthroscopic right knee surgery Aug. 16.

Livings was expected to be out only two to four weeks after his surgery, with a chance to return for the season opener Sept. 8 against the Giants.

Jones was asked Friday if he could put a percentage on the likelihood that Livings will be back playing at all for the Cowboys this season.

“No, I couldn’t even venture a percentage,” Jones said.

Livings’ agent, Pat Dye Jr., didn’t respond Friday to a request for comment.

Livings had surgery on his right knee in early August for the second time in six months. Livings also had surgery on his right knee in February. During organized team activities in May, Livings aggravated his knee injury and hoped that rest would take care of the issue.

But once he started practicing in training camp, Livings’ right knee soreness was still there.

Even a little knee problem is a big issue for an NFL offensive lineman, especially when it’s reoccurring.

“You’d ask yourself, ‘Is there a degeneration in the knee, as opposed to a fix of an injury that comes back as good as new?’ And I think he’s having some of that, a degeneration,” Jones said, “but that’s not uncommon at all at this point in his career, so a combination of those things puts a little guess work into as when he might be back.

“[Marc] Colombo never quit having pain. It’s important that we remind ourselves that there’s very few of these players on the field that aren’t playing with pain. It’s your tolerance of it, or more importantly, you are trying to determine yourself as a player, if you’re injured or if you’re playing through some pain. That’s tough. That’s tough for trainers to diagnose. That’s tough for doctors to diagnose. It’s tough for the player himself, so that’s why you get these iffy answers sometimes when you say, ‘When’s he going to be back? When’s he not going to be back?’ The doctors rely a lot on the level of pain they’re having, the players.”

Livings started all 32 games forCincinnatiin 2010 and 2011. As a free agent in 2012, the Cowboys signed Livings to a five-year, $18.75 million contract. Livings will count $2.4 million against the salary cap this year, and his $1.7 million base salary is fully guaranteed.

If he can't play well any more because of the knee his roster spot is more critical to us then anything. The guaranteed base salary shouldn't matter. We aren't cutting him to save cap this season.

Yeah, but you know Jerry. He'll be optimistic that Livings will be valuable depth.

I kind of hope that Livings just ends up being put on IR because the knee is way worse then we all expected. Then he ends up retiring.

IR is a possibility, but Jerry has always been stupid about pulling the trigger on that. Remember Larry Allen (2002), Darren Woodson (2004), Terry Glenn (2007).
