I am ready to make Hayden and Hatcher the starters and just use Ratliff as a nickel, rotational, matchup guy.

Hayden has shown he can be a plugger big body type and this way Hatcher can play at his most natural spot and both he and Ratliff can hopefully benefit from less wear and tear.
Hayden will get exposed the more he plays. I honestly think we have a weak group at tackle, despite the faith in Ratliff and glowing reports about Cohen. It's going to be a real sore area if Ratlff isn't right...which I don't think he will be.

From what I read the other day in one of the ESPNDallas articles, Anthony Spencer is pretty much ready to go.

Sounds as if he really wants to play but the team is holding him out until week 1 for precautionary reasons.

Really? I read he's not even running yet.

Maybe I misread it. I skimmed the article and from what I gathered it sounded like he was pretty close and was frustrated that he wasn't practicing.

Yep. I misread it.

But it looks he's a definite go for week 1, barring a set back of course.

Watch us make an emergency trade for a CB or sign Richard Marshall.

You can never have enough corners. Now, guard? Feh.

Yeah, he's not running yet. I just don't see how he is going to be ready when he's not even doing band rehab during practice yet.

Jerry and Stephen aren't worried. So you can cut out the fretting.

Scout’s Eye: Costa In Mix; Scandrick Could Start; OT Struggles

Posted 3 hours ago

Bryan Broaddus Football Analyst/Scout

IRVING, Texas – Here are some thoughts from the practice field at Valley Ranch:

•I still believe that Phil Costa is a good fit in this offense but his overall play in the preseason was not good enough to make the front office and coaches feel solid enough to move Travis Frederick to guard full time. If Costa had blown them away, I honestly felt like there was a chance for that move to have taken place but Costa was never more than just steady and Frederick became too valuable to move so Costa will be his backup going into the season.

•I wrote earlier that I believed that you don't worry about injury in training camp until you start practicing for the first game but here is a thought for you, as much as everyone would like to see Morris Claiborne back in the lineup opposite Brandon Carr, if he is not the slight as bit right during that week, I would start Orlando Scandrick against the New York Giants and be confident that he could handle the job.
There are two consistent factors here, Claiborne has missed plenty of work in this camp and Scandrick has not. I am much more confident that guys like Jay Ratliff and Anthony Spencer can play well without the work but I am not as sure about Claiborne. Scandrick has filled in well and for the most part been outstanding not only in the practices but the games as well.
When practicing, there was no doubt that Claiborne had made progress from his work last season and if he was a veteran like Ratliff and Spencer, I promise I would feel different but this is a decision that this front office and coaching staff, might have to make.

•My eyes tell me that Jermey Parnell is not moving as well physically as he did when he played in a rotating system last season with Doug Free. There is something not right with Parnell and I don't know if its physical conditioning or he is struggling with his knee and trying to work his way back into the mix. Saturday night will be a big test for him but the last time he faced these Bengals, he did a nice job and was on the game winning drive.
In this scheme, you have to be able to move well and play on your feet, I am going to keep a close eye on his Saturday night.

•Despite having returned to practice in Oxnard, I really haven't seen much of James Hanna and that has surprised me. Even when the ball has gone in his direction, there seems to be a disconnect between himself and the quarterbacks. He is not getting open like I expected he would because he is the most athletic tight end they have on the roster.
I believe that things will pick up for him in these next two games because of how he and Kyle Orton were able to work so well together on the scout team on a weekly basis. Hanna has the physical traits and skills to be a special player but something needs to get going for him with the season just a short time away and what roles he is going to play in this "12" personnel with Jason Witten.

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne runs for first time since jamming his left knee Aug. 6

IRVING — Dallas Cowboys starting cornerback Morris Claiborne said he ran for the first time Wednesday since he jammed his left knee in practice Aug. 6.

Claiborne, who still hasn’t returned to practice, said he’ll now wait to see if any swelling develops in his left knee over night before re-evaluating what he can do Thursday in his rehabilitation.

Claiborne said he’s confident he’ll be ready to play in the Cowboys’ season opener Sept. 8 against the Giants. He’s not likely to play in either of the final two preseason games as the Cowboys continue to be cautious with the second-year player.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Claiborne needs preseason snaps, however.

“We’ll see where he is physically,” Garrett said. “He needs to practice, he needs to play. But then you say, OK, he’s not healthy enough to do that, what’s our next best alternative. OK, may go into a game where not as much work as you would like him to have.”

Also, Cowboys second-year safety Matt Johnson said the stress reaction in his left foot/ankle is in the navicular bone, which is at the top of his foot where it meets his ankle. He said he has pain when he pushes off. Johnson won’t play Saturday against Cincinnati but hopes to play in the final preseason game Thursday against Houston.

“I need to play,” Johnson said.

Wilcox returns to Valley Ranch after death of his mother, appreciating support of organization

Rookie safety J.J. Wilcox returned to practice Wednesday after going home for 10 days because of the death of his mother.

He said it was good to be around supportive teammates and coaches, who actually did not know his mother was ill until the day he left camp on Aug. 10 to go home to be with his family. He said he did not want that knowledge to influence their evaluation of him.

“Just the player I am,” he said. “I have stuff at home, but I try to deal with that at home. Not here.”

In training camp, Wilcox stood out with his aggressiveness, physicalness and presence around the ball. He had an interception in the second preseason game. But he also had a fumble on a punt return, and coach Jason Garrett said the rookie needed to exert maximum effort on every play.

“I tried not to let that hinder me from my performance and let my teammates down,” Wilcox said. “So I deal with that off the field, and when I’m on the field, I let it go and just use it as fuel to keep pushing.”

Two days after the Oakland game, when he had the interception, he was on a flight home to Cairo, Ga. His mother, 49, died in a hospital later that week. He said it was lupus in a lung.

“She was fighting it for a long time,” he said. “I’m proud of her. She was a strong lady. And I definitely want to stand up and fight for her.”

On one of the last days in practice, fellow rookie B.W. Webb wore Wilcox’s No. 27 jersey.

“When I saw that, it definitely brought tears to my eyes,” Wilcox said. “It let me know that the guys still love me and they're still backing me 110 percent when I'm not here, so that makes a difference.”

Wilcox said the entire organization was supportive.

“Text messages, the flowers and stuff, the coaches calling and checking up on me, the PR people – it was great,” he said. “That makes a difference when you have somebody that’s supporting you.”

Garrett's update on Ratliff 18 days before season-opener: 'He's just working on his rehab right now'

With 18 days to go before the season opener, Jay Ratliff doesn’t appear close to even slipping on pads, let alone practicing.

“He’s just working on his rehab right now,” coach Jason Garrett said, asked for an update at his daily press conference Wednesday.

It was not a strong endorsement of a timeline that could have the veteran defensive tackle ready for action against the Giants. Garrett has said in the past that players like Ratliff are able to step in and play on short notice.

“Really, more than anything else, he’s just trying to get himself stronger,” Garrett said. “Working very hard, and we see him making progress. He’ll have check-ups with doctors as we go here. If he’s clear to do things, he’ll go a little further. He hasn’t been out on the field practicing football at all for us. He’s doing most of his work on the side. We feel like he’s making progress.”

Ratliff’s season ended with five games to go last year because of a groin injury. He did not practice in camp in California because of a hamstring injury suffered in the conditioning test.

Ware expects Ratliff, Spencer to be ready

August, 21, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – The chances that Jay Ratliff and Anthony Spencer play in the preseason are remote at best, but DeMarcus Ware does not think it will take long for either player to get ready for the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the New York Giants.

Ratliff has not practiced this summer because of a hamstring injury suffered in the conditioning test and continued rehab from a sports hernia surgery last December. He remains on the active/physically unable to perform list.

Spencer is recovering from July 25 knee surgery and has yet to begin running.

Ratliff and Spencer are also making position switches, from nose tackle to under-tackle for Ratliff, and from outside linebacker to defensive end for Spencer.

“The scheme is very simple, but the effort is what it’s all predicated on and making plays on athleticism, making it simple so guys can attack and be aggressive,” Ware said. “When Jay and Spencer come back, it’s not about them not knowing the scheme and how they’re going to attack us because when people attack the 4-3, its’ very simple. It’s more about are they going to be in shape or making sure they’re in shape and making sure they’re bodies are right to withstand a whole game.”

Cowboys cornerback Mo Claiborne getting better, but will not play vs. Bengals

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said cornerback Mo Claiborne has improved in his rehab from the knee injury that has sidelined him the past couple of weeks.

He has made progress by starting to run and doing some change direction stuff. Claiborne will not play against the Bengals but the Cowboys are hopeful of getting him back on the practice field next week.

"It’s been positive," Garrett said. "He ran again today and did some good work, some changing direction work. He’s making progress each and every day. It’s important that he does, that he keeps growing. We don’t anticipate him playing this weekend, but these next few days are really important for him to hopefully get back on the practice field at some point next week."

That's why I think they are feeding us full of shit that Spencer will be ready for the opener when he isn't even running yet.

I feel the same way. Claiborne didn't even have surgery and he's been flopping around for three weeks.
