Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones: I like our offensive line; ‘I like what we have a chance to be’

Bill Callahan is in his second year as the Dallas Cowboys offensive line coach and Jerry Jones mentions that as one of the positives when discussing the group that will be trying to protect Tony Romo and open running lanes for DeMarco Murray.

It’s no secret that the Cowboys offensive line was sub-par last season and hasn’t provided many reasons to think they will be much improved this year.

But Jones, who continues to note an increased emphasis on zone-blocking, spent just as much time talking about the blocking of running backs and tight ends as he did on the actual five players up front during a Tuesday morning radio interview.

“I feel like because of the scheme that we’re in, because of what we’re asking them to do, because of what we’re doing by bringing the tight ends, putting more emphasis on them, that’ll make us better blockers,” Jones said Tuesday on the New School show on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “They’re usually better blockers, tight ends, than receivers or, for that matter, even backs. So we’ve got more people blocking up there that can do a better job. I like what the tight ends do to us on the timing of our throws. I like what we’re doing with the ability of our backs. All of them are really good out of the backfield as receivers and, by the way, are squaring up real good as blockers. So I feel good about what we’re doing to really be a part of what we think of when we say offensive line.

“I think we do need to continue to work on our zone blocking to try to just be able to drive out yards. But when they stack ‘em up in the front there, you’d better be able to throw the ball even if it might be short. You’d better be able to throw it. If you do that, you’ll keep them honest and have a better blocking situation, which will help the run.

“I like our offensive line, where we are right now. There are some things that if I could just draw it up on a piece of paper would be better. But where we are relative to what happens on offensive line – it requires five players, they gotta be healthy, you have that happening at various times, it’s a unit – I like what we have a chance to be.”

I would love to see what this idiot would draw up on a piece of paper.

Putting Hanna or Escobar on the field isn't going to improve blocking one bit.

No kidding.

Phillips was a problem last year and he's a better blocker than either of these two guys.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

Jones sounds more and more retarded each year that goes by.

And you know what else makes for a better blocking unit? Better offensive linemen.
