Six-game ban likely for Von Miller

Updated: August 19, 2013, 12:04 PM ET
By Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter | ESPN

Von Miller likely will be suspended at least six games for violation of the league's substance policy, according to league sources, but the sides still are negotiating as representatives of the Denver Broncos linebacker are trying to get the ban reduced to four games.

The announcement is expected this week, and could come as early as Monday.

Miller is not likely to go forward with an appeal, though all sides were trying to finalize the suspension's conditions.

Miller met last Thursday with the NFL Players Association with some hope he could have the suspension reduced to four games, sources said, but another source familiar with the process was convinced it will be at least a six-game suspension.

Regardless, Denver will have to begin planning for games knowing Miller will not be available. The team opens the regular season Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens in a Thursday night game that kicks off the season.

Miller, 24, had 30 sacks in his first two seasons, including 18.5 in 2012.

He has only been caught once in the pros, well twice now. And, he was never caught in college. So, who knows?

Broncos LB Von Miller's possible ban caused by diluted sample

The NFL and NFLPA plan to continue to work toward resolving the Von Miller matter in the coming days regarding the Denver Broncos linebacker's looming suspension.

According to two sources, a diluted sample caused the most recent violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy, but the case has complications that go far beyond that.

It's Year 2 of the Peyton Manning era, and Ian Rapoport says the Broncos look like a well-oiled machine. More ...
Thanks to those unusual circumstances, Miller's most recent misstep might be viewed as a second or third violation of the policy. The NFL could've positioned itself to levy an eight- or even a 16-game suspension in this case, but talks began before things got to that stage, once Miller learned, according to one source, that he was "in a little more trouble than expected." Miller was believed to have some leverage early on, due to a breach of confidentiality.

The question of whether this is a second or third violation is one of the central matters in the case.

The parties agreed to postpone the appeal hearing, initially scheduled for Aug. 15, in order to negotiate Miller's punishment. There have been settlement talks since, with a six-game suspension recently coming up as a possible solution. Miller's side, according to a second source, had been trying to negotiate the suspension down to four games, which was what the original penalty was expected to be.

The hope remains that the appeal hearing won't be necessary, and that the parties can hammer out an agreement. If there's no independent resolution, the appeal hearing would be the next step.

He's a dipshit who is hooked on the pipe much like your being hooked on the knob of our soulless, untrustworthy, redheaded devil of a coach.

... who I'd willingly fire as soon as we could agree on a good coach to replace him.

I think we all know that we're going to get Lovie Smith whether we want him or not. Personally, I'm a David Shaw fan. I think he'll make a great NFL head coach if/when he makes the jump to the pros.

That's going to depend on the offense and if we luck out there and get someone to coordinate that side of the ball effectively.
Lovie has shown no ability to fix an offense, and we've shown no ability to make a "dual head coach" role thing work. Ie, where Lovie can coach one side of the ball and leave the offense to the other guy.

I'm not willing to sign on board for that trainwreck. I'd roll the dice on a college coach first.

You don't have to have a dual head coach to have a good offensive coordinator. Hiring an OC that has more experience than two years as a positional coach would be a good start.

Like Mike Martz, Ron Turner, and Mike Tice?

Lovie doesn't know how to hire offensive coordinators either.

He will not fix this team.

Wow. The season hans't even started and we are talking about a new coach. I am anything but a Garrett supporter but I think it is a little premature for this to be a serious topic. He might turn it around but if not then I will start throwing my opinion into the mix.
