Jason Garrett: Cowboys camp as competitive as any he's been around, says they still have work to do

The Dallas Cowboys broke training camp in Oxnard, Calif. Friday morning after five weeks of work that coach Jason Garrett called as competitive a camp as he's been around.

“The message is don’t change a whole lot,” Garrett said. “It’s the same kind of message about trying to be your best and working hard each and every day. I thought we had a really good camp. Guys came in in shape, ready to go, worked hard. I thought it was very competitive, as competitive a training camp as I’ve been around. Really a tribute to the players and the approach they’ve taken. We try to put them in those situations, but they have to respond to those situations.”

Garrett's message to the team following camp is to continue work and bring that same attitude back when the return to practice in Dallas on Monday following Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals.

Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant was also excited about the work the team did in camp and received Garrett's message of continuing to work loud and clear.

"I think our intensity level since Day 1 was sky-high, and we came out and performed the best of our ability," Bryant said. "We're very excited about the hard work we've put in, and we're looking ft forward to going out and expressing our skills. (Garrett's message was) Don't have that leaving-training-camp mentality. We've still got work to do. I think for the most part everybody knows that. I think that was great of him, sharing, still letting us know that. And by him letting us know that, how serious he is, and just make more guys stay on top of their game."

Jason Garrett's final camp message is the same: Focus on each day

Jason Garrett didn't say anything new or awe-inspiring in his final training-camp message to the team, imploring them to keep the same work ethic when they return home. The Cowboys packed up Friday and headed to Phoenix after a walk-through practice, their 29th day in camp.

"The messages don’t change a whole lot," Garrett said. "It’s the same kind of message about really focus on trying to be your best and working hard each and every day. I thought we had a really good camp. Guys came in in shape, ready to go, worked hard. I thought it was very competitive, as competitive a training camp as I’ve been around, and that’s really a tribute to the players and the approach they’ve taken. We try to put them in those situations, but they have to respond to those situations. So there’s a lot of battles on our team to make the roster, to become a starting player, to have a role on our team. I think those guys brought that to practice each and every day, and I think it made our team better."

The Cowboys return home Saturday night after their third preseason game. They have two weeks before the season opener against the New York Giants.

"I think our intensity level since Day 1 was sky-high, and we came out and performed the best of our ability," Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant said. "We're very excited about the hard work we've put in, and we're looking ft forward to going out and expressing our skills.

"...Don't leave that traning camp mentality. We've still got a lot of work to do."

Garrett: Camp 'as competitive as any I've been around'
August, 16, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. – This was as competitive as any training camp he’s been around, NFL lifer Jason Garrett claimed. As camp wrapped up, he challenged the Cowboys to keep that intensity.

Listen Listen “Don’t have that leaving-training-camp mentality,” receiver Dez Bryant said, recalling Garrett’s message to the team at the end of Friday morning’s walkthrough. “We’ve still got work to do.”

The next stop is Arizona, where the Cowboys play the Cardinals in a preseason game Saturday night, with the majority of the starters scheduled to play 15, maybe 20 snaps. The Cowboys will be home for the rest of their preparation time leading up to the regular season.

“The message is don’t change a whole lot,” Garrett said. “It’s the same kind of message about trying to be your best and working hard each and every day.

“I thought we had a really good camp. Guys came in in shape, ready to go, worked hard. I thought it was very competitive, as competitive a training camp as I’ve been around. Really a tribute to the players and the approach they’ve taken. We try to put them in those situations, but they have to respond to those situations.”
