Mid-Day Report: Leary Back in Dallas For Knee Scope

Posted 4 hours ago

David Helman DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

OXNARD, Calif. – The west coast portion of training camp is all but finished.

Sure, the Cowboys still have 24 days until the regular season starts, and there are still three preseason games to play. But the circus leaves Oxnard for good in roughly 24 hours.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett took the opportunity to address the media one last time before his team’s final practice in California.

•Garrett confirmed that guard Ronald Leary is having his knee scoped and will likely miss about “two weeks.” He said Leary’s procedure won’t be overly complicated and shouldn’t cause him to miss too much time. Leary is en route back to Dallas and won’t be in Arizona for the preseason game against the Cardinals.
•Travis Frederick will likely not flip to left guard because of Leary’s injury. Garrett said Frederick has impressed the coaching staff with his flexibility between center and right guard. But the current plan doesn’t involve Frederick at left guard.
•The Cowboys’ practice schedule will flip when the team returns to Dallas. Whereas practices in Oxnard have been from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., practices in Dallas will begin at 8:15 a.m. and won’t be open to the public.
•There Cowboys will hold a scrimmage in AT&T Stadium next Thursday night, and it will be open to the public.
•Garrett said the Cowboys’ starters will see "a little more than they did last week," in terms of playing time. Though, he said it’s important to evaluate the need for playing time on a player-by-player basis.
•For instance, rookie wide receiver Terrance Williams is a guy who Garrett said might merit extra playing time, because he missed the first two games of the preseason.
•Williams said following Thursday’s walkthrough that he’s excited to get some playing time with the offensive starters, and he feels comfortable with the playbook to this point in the preseason.

•Quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said the relationship between Garrett and offensive coordinator Bill Callahan has been healthy and smooth since Callahan took charge of playcalling. Wilson also diagrammed, loosely, Tony Romo’s role in gameplanning with the coaching staff.
•“What we’ve done in the offseason is, we see concepts that we like, let’s find as many plays that run like that for whoever’s running them and then present a grab bag, or physical evidence on tape and say ‘This is why we like this, and this is what the reads would be and does it fit our stuff,’” Wilson said. “Then we’ll look at it as a staff with Tony in there. ‘Does it fit? Yeah.’ Or, ‘Does it fit? No let’s don’t do it.’ It’s been very healthy.”

But playing him at guard would better than going with the disappointing David Arkin to start the regular-season opener against the Giants if Leary or Nate Livings, who is also out because of minor knee surgery, aren't ready to go.

Arkin will start at guard opposite Mackenzy Bernadeau in Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals. Look for Frederick get snaps at guard during the game as well.
Arkin and Bernadeau are not any worse than Costa.

Cowboys ready to see Terrance Williams in 'Step 1' of his preseason -- game action

The Cowboys are eager to get their first look at third-round pick Terrance Williams in game action.

Coach Jason Garrett said the former Baylor receiver will play early in the preseason game against Arizona on Saturday.

“He’ll certainly play early in this ball game, and he might get a little extended action,” Garrett said.

Williams missed the first two games because of a concussion. He sat out a week of practice and games against the Dolphins and Raiders.
"Finally, I get to go out there and play against a different color," Williams said. "It’s just a matter of being comfortable and just going out there and showing my capabilities."
Receivers coach Derek Dooley said Williams is practicing with a mind to contribute, but the coaches remain aware he is a rookie.

“There’s some development that has to be done,” Dooley said. “Our expectations don’t change. We expect the same from him as we do from all the veterans, but we also recognize that he is a rookie so you have to have a little bit of patience at times.”

What Williams does in the game depends on what he does in practice, Dooley said.

“The starting point is, are they doing it consistently well in practice?” Dooley said. “Then, when they’re doing it consistently well in practice, certainly they’re going to have opportunities in the game, and the more opportunities you take advantage of in a game, the more balls come your way. He’s got to do Step 1, which is get in a game and see what he can do.”

I hope we bust a play where he's pulling and we get to see him going 15-20 yards downfield.
If he starts, we are going to have to hope for Cory Procter-like performance.

I think part of the time he was out was because of a new baby.

This just fills me with intense rage.

Bunch of damn rich polo fags and Jerry is a part-timer with them too.

Arkin is worse than Costa.
I think it's a wash because Arkin wouldn't be handling the ball. I think another run with Costa will lead to more turnovers.

Also, Arkin would only be out there for one game. If they hand Costa the starting spot, they'll never have the balls to pull him.

I think they know Frederick belongs at center. Well, let's just say I hope they know Frederick belongs at center.

Easy... Jerry is lying.

Morris Claiborne will be a fine CB, but an elite player, he will not be. He'd have to be Champ Bailey/Darrelle Revis/Charles Woodson/Nnamdi Asamugha to be that, and he won't be.

We should just fire Garrett now and save the time and effort.

Sad thing is, he's probably telling the truth.

Judging how both him and his idiot son viewed the Felix Jones era in Dallas tells me they have low expectations.
