Leary To Undergo Scope; Status For NYG Opener Now In Doubt

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys' problems at the guard position have taken another hit.

Second-year pro Ron Leary is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Friday, a procedure that will put his chances of playing the Sept. 8 opener against the Giants at AT&T Stadium in jeopardy.

Leary sat out of Wednesday's walk-through practice in Oxnard, which put David Arkin running with the first-team again at left guard.

Leary had been working with the starters since he returned from a hamstring injury two weeks ago. Leary took every snap of the Aug. 5 game with the Dolphins in Canton, and also played into the second half against Oakland last week.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, the injury is to his right knee and not the left knee that scared off many teams from drafting Leary in 2012.

This injury further raises the question about the Cowboys' interest in veteran Brian Waters. The club has reached out to the 36-year old veteran who hasn't played since 2011. Waters, a five-time Pro Bowler apparently has interest in playing again, but doesn't appear to be in a hurry to join a training camp.

The Cowboys tried to sign veteran Brandon Moore last week but the former New York Jet standout decided not to reunite with coach Bill Callahan and chose to stay retired.

Don't forget about veteran Nate Livings, who also had a knee scope two weeks ago and has a shot to be ready by the start of the season.

For Saturday's game in Arizona, the Cowboys are expected to start Arkin at left guard and Mackenzy Bernadeau on the right side.

I wonder if Joan & Company are questioning themselves yet on passing on the notion of signing Grubbs in free agency and drafting DeCastro last year.

Duece: Considering it's free admission, it's about as public as it gets.

I don't think free admission means its public property to do what you want. I think that means you get in for free, but it's still the owners house.

I was referring to Training Camp, not ATT Field. Jones doesn't own the training camp site. It's a public field the other 300 days a year.

What case are you referring to?
Its a well established legal precident. There are hundreds of cases mostly to do with illegial trespass warnings given to individuals here in Texas alone.

In fact, dez bryant was illegally tresspassed from a mall in dallas before it was later retracted so he wouldn't take them to court.

That's not an answer. Give me a case.

Same here, Im referring to the TC fields. I read they are City of Oxnard fields, so that does beg the question. That would imply they are public fields.

Callahan: Injuries mean that all line combos are alive, including Frederick at guard, Costa at center

The Cowboys had hoped to use training camp to solidify questions along the offensive line and develop some chemistry there with rookie center Travis Frederick.

But a rash of injuries to open camp and during camp, including the latest setback with guard Ron Leary undergoing minor knee surgery, has left everything in flux.

They still hope to entice veteran guard Brian Waters off his couch in Waxahachie and join the Cowboys with a one-year contract after they return home from camp next week. But short of that, they could move Frederick to guard and play backup Phil Costa at center.

That would give them a chance to put their best five lineman on the field though it may not be the best position for Frederick.

But playing him at guard would better than going with the disappointing David Arkin to start the regular-season opener against the Giants if Leary or Nate Livings, who is also out because of minor knee surgery, aren't ready to go.

Arkin will start at guard opposite Mackenzy Bernadeau in Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals. Look for Frederick get snaps at guard during the game as well.

“We’re two guards down at that spot," offensive line coach/offensive coordinator coach Bill Callahan said. " We’ll have to see what we do going forward. We really haven’t finalized anything. I think all combinations are alive. We just haven’t settled on one. We’ll see how they respond and make our plans accordingly. We haven’t announced anything, and we’re not going to until after the game. We’ll look at some other combinations possibly or maybe just stay where we’re at. We’ll get a good evaluation.’’
