Former Washington quarterback Donovan McNabb offered this offseason to have a sit-down with current Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III to advise the youngster on how to succeed in the NFL, on and off the field. Griffin declined.

Griffin discussed the situation with GQ, saying that he doesn’t have anything against McNabb, but that he thinks it would be better to keep his distance.

“I don’t think Donovan is an idiot by any means,” he told me. “But right now, it’s probably best we don’t talk.”

I’m not sure who suggested that McNabb is an idiot or why Griffin felt the need to make clear that he doesn’t consider McNabb an idiot, but it’s easy to see why Griffin would rather stay away from McNabb: When McNabb left Washington, he did so on bad terms with coach Mike Shanahan, and he did so as an unpopular man with the team’s fans. McNabb had a lot of success earlier in his NFL career, but his year in Washington was a mess, and it was the kind of mess Griffin is wise to avoid.

McNabb: RG III being 'brainwashed'

RICHMOND, Va. -- Robert Griffin III made it clear he doesn't want to talk to Donovan McNabb -- at least right now. McNabb made it clear what he thinks as well.

"I honestly think that over there in Washington, he's getting brainwashed," McNabb said on his NBC Sports Radio show Tuesday. "He's getting input from whoever it may be on, 'There's no reason to talk to him, it didn't work out here.'"

McNabb had wanted to talk to Griffin in the spring, but the current Washington Redskins starting quarterback rebuffed any overtures at the time.

And, in a recent article for GQ Magazine, Griffin said of any talk with McNabb: "I don't think Donovan is an idiot by any means. But right now, it's probably best that we don't talk.''

McNabb spent the 2010 season with Washington, a failed tenure thanks to questions about his work ethic and relationship with the coach. Mike Shanahan questioned McNabb's "cardiovascular endurance" after benching him in a loss to Detroit. Despite a contract extension, McNabb and the Redskins parted ways after that season.

In the spring, McNabb said that Griffin was doing too much and wanted him to stop talking to the media because he was still injured and not on the field during workouts. He said he would love to talk to Griffin but was unable to get in touch with him. McNabb also criticized Shanahan in a 2012 appearance on ESPN's "First Take."

"I hope the best for the young man, but the direction he's going in is really a direction he does not want to do," McNabb said. "He does not want to go there with me, especially when I got the last word. I'm just trying to help him." Griffin doesn't want that help.

"Clearly the young generation, they think they have all the answers," McNabb said. "He's going through a little turmoil right now, trying to make it out on the field, and it's unfortunate. But that's where we're at right now as far as these young quarterbacks who think they have all the answers. Until things start to fall apart and come down trembling on you, then you want some help. But it's a shame."
