For Cowboys, shoes matter tonight

August, 9, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. – Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum is a dinosaur in many ways, and it is the only stadium in the NFL that features a baseball infield.

Cowboys coach Jason Garret said field condition will not play into the game plans for the offense or kickers. But he will have a message for the players.

“Well, the approach is to remind them to get out there early and get your shoes right; don’t let equipment beat you,” Garrett said. “That’s an important thing.

"Having played there, it’s different when you’re on the grass and then get on the dirt. It’s different, so you have to make sure you’re wearing the right stuff to keep your feet and function the way you want to function. As for as substitution, I don’t think it’s going to impact our substitution pattern at all.”

Thanks for the insight JG. Glad you can draw from your vast playing experience to verify that infield dirt DOES feel different than grass.

Sean Lee's goal: 'Get to every football'

August, 9, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

OAKLAND, Calif. – The goal is simple for the Cowboys’ starting defense during its first preseason action under Monte Kiffin.

“We’ve got to play with a certain amount of effort and find a way to get to every football,” middle linebacker Sean Lee said. “We want to be around the football nonstop. It’ll be a good test for us from a conditioning standpoint.”

Lee and the rest of the defensive starters won’t see much action Friday night against the Raiders. They are expected to play only one or two series with a vanilla game plan typical for the preseason.

Kiffin’s Tampa 2 is widely considered a pretty simple scheme. The Cowboys will have many variations of the scheme, especially the coverages, but it won’t be nearly as complicated as Rob Ryan’s three-inch thick playbook.

The hope is that Kiffin’s scheme is easier to learn and execute, but Lee doesn’t see it as simplistic.

“I don’t think any scheme is simple if you try to master it,” Lee said. “Knowing it inside and out and trying to perfect it is what we’re trying to do. Until we do that, it’s not going to be simple.”

What does he mean "nothing concrete"?

It's pretty much guaranteed that those outside of the Dallas and Oakland market will miss some of the game. If you're watching the game on NFLN the Cowboy game won't air until the completion of the Patriots-Eagles game.

Scout’s Notebook: Expect More From WRs; Eager To See Coale

OAKLAND
– Here are some thoughts before the Raiders game Friday night:

  • First game action for right guard, Mackenzy Bernadeau working with rookie Travis Frederick. Last week, Frederick and Ronald Leary did a nice job together with Frederick helping him several times when he was uncovered in pass protection. Bernadeau and Frederick through the last several practices seem to be growing comfortable with each other but keep an eye on them for this game when the action is live.

  • Expect a better game from these wide receivers. I didn't feel like they all had their "A" games last week and that hurt how the quarterbacks played. Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley have done a solid job in camp but need to show me something tonight. Danny Coale will also get his first game action in a long while. He too has looked good since coming back and can ill afford any setbacks to his chances for a roster spot. With a banged upMorris Claiborne and an exhausted Brandon Carr, look for Sterling Moore andB.W. Webb to get plenty of work. Webb is whom I am very interested in because he is going to see work on the outside but the slot as well. Jason Garrett often speaks of players that need to cut it loose and just play, Webb falls into that group. There have been times in practice where he has played cautious and others where the talent has shown but this front office and coaching staff need to see more of that.

  • Brandon Magee hasn't shown up like I thought he would have. In the game Taylor Reedoutplayed him as did DeVonte Holloman. Magee needs to find ways to show up whether its special teams or on defensive snaps. His college film showed a much better player and maybe he needed to get a game under his belt but that time is now. One of the best run-hit players I observed on tape but have yet to see him in many piles. These linebacker numbers will be tight and he can't not make plays because the linebackers ahead of him and around him have.

  • Will see if Bill Callahan is once again committed to trying to run the football with these backs. I believe he will because he is trying to build toughness with this offense. I like what these backs have done in practice and how they physically take the ball down hill. Callahan wants to use these tight ends in the passing game as well and one of the ways to do that is pound that rock. Callahan also wants to protect his quarterback all he can and running the ball helps that cause.

  • Last week, George Selvie was the defensive star. This week he moves from the right defensive end to the left side and is running with the first defense. Selvie opened a lot of eyes last week with his play, so much so that the defensive coaches kicked Ben Bass back inside at tackle. I didn't feel like Selvie in practice on the left side was as productive against Doug Free so we will see how things shake out for him this week. Coaches are looking for rotational players, at both the ends and tackles and this will be another opportunity to hold that spot or make them go in another direction.

Great. Kelly has said he's not going up tempo in this game so it means it definitely pre-empts our game later.

There are so many free tv feeds now, I have pretty much just started watching them online. Still kinda annoying, but its awfully convienient.

Yeah, but a choppy grainy feed on your laptop is not the same as having a full HD picture on a 60 inch TV.

That's true. And mines a 65. Pioneer elite. Which is why my kids have a deathgrip on the remote. Plus, when I'm watching Dallas I'm usually cussing like a sailor.

Some of the feeds have improved their resolution somehow lately. First row sports is pretty ok.
