Garett says injuries are the biggest concern at guard, which is why they tried to sign Moore. They would rather keep Frederick at center

Ernie Sims on fight: 'It's like two males in the wild'

August, 7, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. – Linebacker Ernie Sims intends to talk to running back Lance Dunbar to make sure there are no lingering ill effects from the first fight of the Cowboys’ training camp.

Sims respects that Dunbar reacted to being slung to the ground by going after a linebacker with a 40-pound weight advantage.

“It’s like two males in the wild, you know?” Sims said. “If a male comes strike at you, you’re going to strike back. We’re playing football. It’s a physical sport. I look at is as animals in the wild. It’s domination. That’s how I look at it.”

These types of things tend to happen two weeks into training camp. In fact, it’s fairly remarkable that it took two weeks for tempers to flare.

“It’s training camp,” said Sims, who is trying to make the team as a versatile veteran reserve linebacker and special teams player. “That’s the reason why I asked my wife to come out here, so I can at least see my wife, so I don’t have to see these men all the time. Bumping up and pushing men all the time, you get tired of it after a while. Running, people yelling at you, it’s just the way it is. You just come out here and compete.

“That’s what I’m trying to do – come out here and compete. I’m trying to earn my position on this team. I’m trying to get a starting job. I’m trying to do everything. But first and foremost, I’m trying to take care of my family. That’s what I have to do.”

Sims, the ninth overall pick in the 2006 draft, is well aware that he has to fight and scratch just to stay in the league at this point of his career. That was made clear when he was unemployed for the first six weeks of last season, signing with the Cowboys after injuries decimated the Dallas linebacker corps.

While the coaches don’t encourage fights during practices, Jason Garrett admires Sims’ last-chance attitude.

“He’s playing with a chip on his shoulder,” Garrett said, “and that’s a good thing.”

I don't know why but I find this to be absolutely hilarious.

W2W4: Cowboys training camp: Day 14

August, 8, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys finish up two days worth of practices and will leave for Oakland on Thursday afternoon.

Just a walk: This is a walkthrough practice and is closed to the fans. The Cowboys will go over some situational things such as kneel downs, third-down plays and special teams. The players won't wear helmets and pads and will work at half-speed.

Who's going to play Friday?: Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, Jason Hatcher,DeMarcus Ware, Brandon Carr, Barry Church, Will Allen -- roughly all the starters should make their debuts against the Oakland Raiders. Last week, tackles Tyron Smith and Doug Free, along with linebacker Justin Durant, played against the Miami Dolphins. The starters will play one or two series and coach Jason Garrett will get them out of there.

Who's not going to play?: Wide receiver Terrance Williams (concussion) and cornerbackMorris Claiborne (knee) are doubtful for the game. Linebacker Alex Albright (back) and guard/center Ryan Cook (back) could be held out as well.

Debuts, debuts, debuts: The interior of the Cowboys offensive line is a hot topic around here. The projected starting center/guards heading into training camp have changed. The new projected starting center/guards are Ronald Leary at left guard, Travis Frederick at center and Mackenzy Bernadeau at right guard. Frederick is doing a good job with his line calls, and he's very quick when he needs to reach the second level in the run game.

What's left?: After today's walkthrough, the Cowboys have five more scheduled practices before leaving for Phoenix for the final road preseason game on Aug. 17.

This doesn't bother me. I'd rather they play it safe and make sure he's healthy, over rushing him back and having it bother him all season. There are still three preseason games after this one for him to get his work in.

Injury report: No Claiborne, Williams

August, 8, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- Cowboys starting cornerback Morris Claiborne didn't participate in the walkthrough practice Thursday morning because of a sore left knee, raising concerns about his availability for Friday night's preseason game at Oakland.

Claiborne jammed his knee in Tuesday's practice and tried to get some work in Wednesday. But he said the knee felt tight and the training staff didn't want him to risk further injury. It's doubtful Claiborne will play.

Also, rookie wide receiver Terrance Williamsmissed practice as he recovers from a concussion. Williams ran sprints with some other injured players during the Wednesday walkthrough. Williams most likely will miss the Raiders game.

Kevin Kowalski (knee), Jeff Olson (concussion), Ray Dominguez (shoulder), Nate Livings(knee), Demetress Bell (conditioning), Matt Johnson (foot), Alex Albright (back), Ryan Cook(back), Jay Ratliff (hamstring) and Anthony Spencer (knee) did not practice and won't play against the Raiders.

Update: The Cowboys released Olson after the walkthrough practice. He did some work in the rehab session Thursday morning.

Demetress Bell STILL isn't in shape?

What's he still doing here then?

The better question is, why was he even brought in to begin with?

Is it just me or does Tony seem to be throwing a lot of picks or dropped INTs in practice?

Mid-Day Report: Romo Talks Raiders Game, Claiborne Sits Out

Posted 6 hours ago

David Helman DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

OXNARD, Calif. – Notes from Thursday morning’s walkthrough will have to suffice, as Cowboys coach Jason Garrett did not hold a press conference ahead of the team’s flight to Oakland.

The Cowboys held an hour-long walkthrough ahead of their second preseason game at Oakland. Quarterback Tony Romo spoke to the media following the workout, in lieu of a media session with Garrett. Here are some notes from the proceedings:
•Cornerback Morris Claiborne said Wednesday night he hoped and expected to be a part of the Thursday walkthrough. He did not make it out to the field, however, which seems like a good indicator he won’t get any snaps against the Raiders. Orlando Scandrick got the first-team cornerback reps in place of Claiborne.

•Fellow starter Brandon Carr did return to the team after missing two days while his fiancée gave birth. Carr went through walkthrough and looks likely to get a small amount of playing time.
•The Cowboys released guard Jeff Olson shortly after the morning practice ended. Olson spent roughly a week on the squad, after he was concussed by defensive tackle Jason Hatcher on his first day at practice.
•Despite posting two sacks during the Hall of Fame game, defensive end George Selvie remained on the second-string defensive line for the walkthrough. He lined up with Jerome Long, Sean Lissemore and Kyle Wilber to form the second unit.
•The starters remained from the Miami game – Ben Bass, Nick Hayden, Hatcher and DeMarcus Ware.
•Defensive end Anthony Spencer was at walkthrough in street clothes. Spencer has been visible at practice this past week after missing time due to surgery. It remains to be seen how quickly Spencer will ease is way into work.
•The starters look likely to spend at least some time on the field this week, after sitting against Miami. But Romo said the Cowboys aren’t likely to get too intricate. “We’re not going to show very much in this game. We might show some things we’ve done before,” he said. “We’re still in those last couple things, just talking about them. But we’ve got it narrowed down pretty good, so I think we’ll be fine here in another couple hours as to exactly what we’re going to do and what we’re not.”
•Asked about the run-heavy playbook against Miami, Romo said he was encouraged to see the offense rush the ball – something it was unable to do in 2012. “Being able to run the ball helps a lot. If you run the ball well, we’re going to keep calling the runs,” he said. “We need to run the ball better this year just in general. To me, that’s an important aspect of what we’re trying to do, and we need to do that.”

•With his first preseason action rapidly approaching, the veteran quarterback said the Cowboys would do well not to read too much into the successes and failures of a preseason games. “I think sometimes we’ll just jump to too many conclusions -- us as well as you guys -- based on it. ‘We’re going to be good, you’re not going to be that good.’ More than anything you just want to have good execution,” Romo said. “You want to be able to do things. You’re not game planning per se and having the stuff that you’re really going to attack certain coverages and certain teams a certain way.”

W2W4: Cowboys training camp: Day 15

August, 11, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys begin their final week of training camp Sunday with a 7 p.m. CT practice, 5 p.m. PT.

The undated injury report: There's always something right? Well, wide receiver Cole Beasley hurt his left foot in the Oakland loss on Friday night and his status for this week is in question. There is some good news, rookie wide receiver Terrance Williams is expected to return after missing the game with a concussion. Cornerback Morris Claiborne could also return Sunday after missing the Raiders game with a sore knee. Linebacker Alex Albright(back) is also expected on the practices fields.

Brian Waters update: The Cowboys are interested in obtaining the veteran guard to improve the offensive line. The Cowboys were spurned in their attempts to sign Brandon Moore, who elected to retire instead of playing in 2013. Waters hasn't played since 2011 when he was with the New England Patriots. If Waters is signed he'll get a chance to compete for the starting right guard position with Mackenzy Bernadeau.

Who needs a good week: Let's start with safety J.J. Wilcox, who led the team with six tackles and one interception against the Raiders. We're not picking on Wilcox, because he's still learning how to play safety, but he needs better ball awareness. Same can be said of cornerback B.W. Webb who missed a few tackles and allowed a receiver to get behind him. Webb also muffed a punt. Gavin Escobar has to improve his blocking and route running. The rookie, a second-round pick, is behind James Hanna on the depth chart. Special teams had a rough night in Oakland. A muffed punt, a 51-yard kick return was allowed, a blocked field goal and some mental mistakes. George Selvie played well in the first preseason game against the third teamers. Faced with the starters and second-teamers in Oakland, he struggled.

Moving up: Joseph Randle, the rookie running back, is still behind DeMarco Murray, Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner, but you can tell he's got the skills. He displays good vision and isn't afraid of contact. Left guard Ronald Leary is making the Cowboys forget Nate Livings. Leary had a solid night in Oakland playing the first half. The more snaps he gets the better he's becoming. Defensive tackle Ben Bass had only one tackle but he was a force along the defensive line.

I really wish they'd stop talking about Waters until there is something legitimate to report.
