Stephen Jones: Failed opportunity with Moore an example of team doing every thing it can to win now

Vice president Stephen Jones said the team was surprised veteran guard Brandon Moore changed his mind about signing with the Cowboys Wednesday morning just hours after agreeing to terms on a one-year deal Tuesday night.

“I totally respect his decision,” vice-president Stephen Jones said. “Obviously with a commitment like this you got to be all in. But it’s surprising yes. We thought we had a deal and were going to have him here.”

Jones said the Cowboys the position remains a huge concern and the Cowboys will continue to look at all their options in via free agency, trade or the waiver wire.

“We are not through looking,” Jones said. “We have options. But we also have parameters we have to work with in with our cap situation. We have guys we are looking at. We will continue to look at all our options.”

Jones said the Cowboys didn't address the position in the spring because of salary-cap issues and the hope that returning starters Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings would be better in year two with the team. But that was before they were missed much of the off season program with injuries and have been hobbled throughout training camp.

"You have things that aren’t working out as planned and you get guys injured and guys don’t do as well as you might have hoped," Jones said on trying to address problems at guard now and not earlier. "Maybe they’re not doing as well because they’re injured. Nothing is ever going to go perfect and in a salary cap you can’t cover every situation. You have to leave you some room in case one situation goes awry and we left ourselves a little room to do something, which we obviously tried to do some thing yesterday and it didn’t work out for us."

One take way from the Moore pursuit that is a positive for Cowboys fans is that it’s an example of the organization doing everything it can to upgrade the team and win now. They are trying not to hinge success on hope and prayer by putting a band aid on a critical situation.

Well, I certainly feel better about things knowing this. Hello, draft ? Free agency?

Props to Moore. I wish I could turn down that kind of money for my family. I might, but I don't know for sure. You never know until the check is on the table.

Sims was a long shot to make the roster; now based on performance, it seems like he will make the team. Why is that a problem?
Didn't say it was. I think we need the player.

I love the part where Stephen says they didn't address guard in the offseason because of salary cap constraints AND because of hope that Livings and Bernadeau would be better.

They are trying to hide behind cap issues but they were able to bring in guys like Durant and Allen. They paid Danny McCray over a million dollars. Maybe they couldn't afford an elite guard but they could have done something if they wanted to. Would you rather have McCray and Costa or a solid viable guard?

The real problem here is yet again their misevaluation of their personnel. If they still had hope for Livings and Bernadeau as Stephen suggests after watching them all last season, then they don't know what the hell they are looking at.

The media has finally picked up on the saying that hope is not a strategy.

I wonder if our hillbilly leadership ever will get that.

Yeah, the thing is, had we gone harder and handed over some of that $10 million in cap space to the guy back in, say, May, he might be here right now.

I do think you can't call him up and offer him more money and get him to mentally commit to this right now, but I think back in May, it's possible he simply was looking for a better offer. If he had committed then, I think he'd be in.

Someone needs to photoshop a pic of Jerry onto one of those old Obama HOPE campaign posters with the funny colors.

I'm pretty sure VA did this a couple years ago.

Cowboys philosophy: Just hope craps turns to gold. Sorry Stephen but 99 times out of 100 it isn't going to work that way. And just look at your deddy. 20+ years later and he's still a crappy GM and no amount of hoping is going to change that either.
