Cowboys have interest in Brandon Moore

August, 6, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys are in discussions with veteran guard Brandon Moore, according to sources, and a deal could go down quickly.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted a deal for a veteran offensive lineman after Tuesday’s practice but would not divulge a name or names. Brian Waters’ name has been linked to the Cowboys, but sources have said there have not been any meaningful discussions.

Moore, 33, played for offensive coordinator Bill Callahan for four years with the New York Jets. He spent his first 11 seasons with the Jets, starting 142 of 144 games in his career and every game since 2005. Moore recently refuted a report that he would be retiring, telling ESPNNewYork that he was in shape and ready to go.

Nate Livings is expected to miss 2-4 weeks because of knee surgery last week andMackenzy Bernadeau returned to practice late last week after missing the first two-plus weeks with a hamstring injury. Ronald Leary has worked with the first team in Livings’ absence and has earned praise from the coaches. David Arkin started at right guard Sunday against Miami, but Bernadeau took all of the first team snaps on Tuesday.

If Moore joins the team, it would allow the Cowboys to keep rookie Travis Frederick almost exclusively at center. Frederick played guard some in the second half against the Dolphins, but the team wants to keep their first-round pick at center if at all possible.

Even if Moore does not sign with the Cowboys it at least rekindles talk of the “buttfumble,” last year when Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez colli

Who would you prefer.... Moore or Waters? I might bring in both and see what sticks, it's not like it would hurt us to jettison some of the dead weight along the OL like Ray Dominguez or Jeff Olson.

But either way this sounds promising at least.

Moore, since he hasn't been out of football.

Owner Says Cowboys Could Add Veteran Guard To The Mix
Posted 6 minutes ago

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys are expected to add another veteran guard to the equation, possibly even reaching a deal by as early as Tuesday evening.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked the question following Tuesday’s practice and didn’t deny getting some interior line help.

“We’re working, doing some things on the offensive line that I think will help our depth,” Jones said. “The main thing is just stay tuned. We’re trying to do some things there.”

The leading candidate could be veteran Brandon Moore, who played four seasons for Bill Callahan with the Jets from 2008-11.

Moore was picked up by the Jets after going undrafted in 2002 and played with them for 10 years through the 2012 season. He’s played in 144 games and started all but two of them during that time. Moore was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2011.

There were reports Moore would retire after the 2012 season, but that’s apparently not the case. Moore, who hasn’t missed a game since the 2004 season, will provide depth to an interior line that’s struggled to remain healthy.

Other possible additions could be Brian Waters and Geoff Hangartner.

This news comes on the same day Mackenzy Bernadeau returned to full practice for the first time. He worked at right guard while Ron Leary continued to run with the first-team at the left side. Veteran starter Nate Livings had minor knee surgery last week and is expected to miss the next 2-3 weeks.

Jones said adding some experience to the line would be the ultimate reason for the move.

“That’s sure part of it. I think you have to recognize that you’ve got a younger, with Smith as well as potentially Parnell if he does get back, it’s younger. Bernadeau brings us some experience and so does Livings, but still, it does have to do with we’ve got a younger group there. But it will have more to do with the availability of the player that we bring in. If we bring in a veteran, it will be about him."

Good...that means they are going to keep Frederick at C and are now trying to strengthen the interior around him. Nice that they wait until August to do something-- but you can do a lot worse than either Waters or Moore.

I think this would be a good signing. If Moore has anything left, he's better than anything we have that could play there. Leary at LG, Moore at RG. Allowing Fred to play center, like he's supposed to. If Free can even remotely do his job, we could have a serviceable OL. Maybe even decent.

I welcome the move but the timing is strange to say the least. They make no move all offseason when the position looked bleakest. Now that Leary is looking pretty solid they want to bring a guy in.

Honestly if you assume Frederick is the center and Leary solidifies LG, I'd be much more concerned about RT than RG.

Agreed.

I mean, lets wait till August to address the OL with schlubs no one else wants.
Not just that. I just don't buy it.

Desperation was a week ago. Bernadeau is coming back and is practicing...this just doesn't make a lot of sense.

But hey, this is a team with two of the biggest hillbilly fricks in the universe as decision makers...so...

I agree. We should have done this sooner, but at least we are doing it now. Hopefully.

Is there anything left out there that could upgrade RT? I honestly don't know.

And pretty much anything would upgrade RG for us.

That's the most concerning thing to me. I know these articles are focusing on Moore's positives, but (and I hate to go Spags here) why is Moore still out there in early August?

A quick cruise around the internet points out Moore hasn't been the same since hip surgery and that is probably why he hasn't gotten much play in FA.
