From Schefter's twitter...

Cowboys LE Anthony Spencer will undergo knee surgery due to a bone bruise and is expected to miss 2-4 weeks.

Spencer's knee has been bothersome since spring practices, and it flared up again in the pre-camp conditioning test. The 29-year-old admitted Monday night that surgery was a possibility, and both he and the team have decided to knock it out of the way so that he can be ready in time for the season opener. Second-year DE Kyle Wilber, the Cowboys' No. 3 end, will see significant reps.
It's good that these other DE's will get so many reps with Spencer out, the scheme is easy to learn and we probably should severely limit Ware's reps during the preseason. Hopefully once these guys fall flat on their face our genius braintrust will be prompted to sign somebody.

2-4 weeks seems like a pretty optimistic estimate on recovery for what's sounding like a potentially devastating situation if he comes back too soon. The inner bone that's fractured in this type of injury that Spencer has takes longer to heal than the outer bone based on what I'm reading, and given that he's a rather large man and a pro athlete I would think they would want to be more cautious so he doesn't explode the knee like the player from Louisville.

Good call. Hopefully Kiffen isn't so senile that he can't tell anymore. Certainly you'd think Marinelli would be able to tell.

Let's hope but Jerry's brand of retarded optimism might be too much to overcome.

Even 6 weeks gets him back before Game 1.
