I know a blow by blow Twitter feed of practice is going to paint an ugly picture, but this stuff is pretty awful...mainly because it is just affirming what we already knew. The OL is going to be a continuing problem. If there is one positive is that the defense seems to be taking to the simpler scheme. The main thing to remember is that in shorts and shirts, they are going to have an advantage over the blockers.

The defense is always ahead of the offense this early and on the interior we have a rookie center in about his 12th professional practice with both likely starting OG's out. The OL will still be mediocre at best I'm sure but there is no way it will be as bad as I'm sure it looks now.

If he even remotely needs it, get it done...now. I don't trust this staff's ability to make decisions about player health.
Well, of course, get it done now, but it's infuriating we franchised a guy twice for this.

Why is that bad?

Pull them all and they'll get on the guy who is making the mistake. Added incentive.
Yeah, because we have all kinds of leaders on this team to make that happen.

W2W4: Cowboys practice Day 2

July, 22, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys will have their second practice of training camp on Monday.

Here's a preview:

Finding replacements: The Cowboys have one roster spot available and with the lost of defensive end Tyrone Crawford for the season to an Achilles tear and the uncertain return of defensive tackle Jay Ratliff (hamstring), team executive vice president said Stephen Jones said the team most likely will sign a defensive lineman. With Crawford and Ratliff out, the Cowboys are giving more snaps to Ike Igbinosun, Monte Taylor, Cameron Sheffield andJeris Pendleton.

Romo Day 2: Tony Romo was uneven during Sunday's first practice, getting a few throw tipped and having Sean Lee intercept a pass. It could be attributed to Romo being off for a few months as he recovered from minor back surgery. Romo did practice on Sunday in shells so he could get familiar with throwing passes again. Monday could be a better day for him after he shakes the rust off.

Running backs getting looks: DeMarco Murray looked very good in Day 1, hitting holes quickly and hard. He also did a good job of catching passes out of the backfield. The Cowboys are bringing rookie Joseph Randle along slowly because he missed the offseason workouts recovering from a thumb injury. Randle could get more looks in practice, but for now he's behind Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner.

Kyle Wilber moves up to first-team: Anthony Spencer is day-to-day with an achy knee, so Wilber is getting more snaps with the first-team defense. Wilber moved from outside linebacker to end in the offseason and bulked up to prepare for the role. If you attend practice on Monday afternoon, watch Wilber go up against the tackles and see how he reacts when balls are thrown out of the backfield.

Notes: The afternoon practice starts at 4 p.m. and ends around 6 p.m. PT. ... Sunday's practice had an attendance of 6,614. The Cowboys can't place Crawford on the PUP or the injured reserve list until the final cuts. Crawford will make the 53-man roster but then will get placed on IR, ending his season. ... The following players are on the active/non-football injury list: Demetress Bell, Ryan Cook, L.P. Ladouceur, Ronald Leary, Nate Livings and Lavasier Ruinei.

Cowboys practice report: Day 2

July, 22, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- Here's the Day 2 practice report from Cowboys training camp:

*The early portions of practice saw several members of the offensive line get pushed to the ground on running plays. We're not talking about the third unit here, the first-and-second teams got knocked around by the Cowboys defense. During a DeMarco Murray run, four linemen hit the ground and two more on the next play, prompting one of the coaches to yell, "Gotta stay up." As the practice moved on the linemen, especially the interior of the line got better. However, coach Jason Garrett benched the first-team line after center Travis Frederick botched a snap to Tony Romo. When the line returned a few plays later, another coach yelled, "welcome back."

*One team official said it's early, but after two days of practices, tackle Jermey Parnell is struggling. Last season he shared snaps with Doug Free at right tackle. While Free is having a solid two days of camp, Parnell looks slow getting off the ball and is having trouble defending Kyle Wilber off the edge. Ben Bass, a defensive tackle, slid past Parnell for a sack and he missed a block on a screen pass to Dwayne Harris.

*Rookie wide receiver Terrance Williams got snaps with the first and second team units on Monday and was inconsistent. He was wide open when he dropped pass from Tony Romo. Someone from the sidelines yelled at Williams for dropping the ball. Williams also dropped a pass on Sunday.

*DeMarcus Ware had three sacks on Monday and is displaying power, speed and well, he's just all over the field. He doesn't appear to have any problems in his shoulder, which was operated on in the offseason.

*Jason Hatcher is also off to a strong start of camp, he's getting pressures on the quarterback and at one point on Monday, was being held by two offensive linemen on a pass rush.

*The Cowboys have forced turnovers from the safeties and linebackers but none from the cornerbacks. While Orlando Scandrick knocked a pass away for Dez Bryant on Sunday,Morris Claiborne picked up his first PBU of camp on Monday. Also, Will Allen, a safety, made the play of the day, when he took a deep ball out of the hands of wide receiver Miles Austin. Allen appears to be the safety with range the Cowboys have been looking for the last couple of years.

*Hate to beat up on the line again, but when Costa snapped the ball before Kyle Ortonwas ready for it in the shotgun formation, Garrett said, "that's how you lose."

*Rookie running back Joseph Randle did a good job of concentrating when a ball was tipped by Bass over the middle. Randle snagged it and ran down field for a nice gain.

*Defensive end Monte Taylor continues to make plays with Tyrone Crawford out. Taylor stopped Lance Dunbar for a tackle for loss in the afternoon session. In the morning practice, he pushed the pocket, forcing Orton to scramble.

*The Cowboys can make a roster move with Crawford when they reduce the roster to 75 on Aug. 27, not when they do it on Aug. 31, the final cut down day. Cowboys will have to keep Crawford on their 90-man roster because the only other move they can make a move is releasing him and they don't want to do that. Crawford is a valuable player who will be moved to injured reserve after the Cowboys make a roster move in late August.

Parnell isn't a rookie and by all accounts he's getting his ass handed to him by everyone.

Common sense would tell you this group won't be much worse than they were last year, but on the other hand this group of Cowboys rarely misses an opportunity to set a new standard of shittiness so you have to be concerned.

Day 2 observations from Dallas Cowboys training camp practices: DE DeMarcus Ware has big day as defense dominates offense

By Brandon George / Reporter

DALLAS COWBOYS OBSERVATION DECK:

Here’s what stood out from Day 2 of Dallas Cowboys’ training camp practices Monday in Oxnard, Calif.:

– The crowd size on Day 2 of Cowboys practice was only a third of what it was on Day 1 with 2,331 fans.

– For the second consecutive practice, CB Brandon Carr was beat in coverage on the first play of team drills in the afternoon practice. On Day 1, WR Dez Bryant beat Carr and on Monday, it was Austin who beat Carr across the field for a big gain.

– DE DeMarcus Ware continues to be really active. He had two would-be sacks of Tony Romo in team drills and has looked quick the first two days of practices.

– On the flip side, LT Tyron Smith struggled Monday. Ware beat him twice for sacks and Smith also had a false start in team drills.

– Early in team drills, new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin was fired up as he yelled, “We need 11 guys to the ball.”

– RB Phillip Tanner made a good cut back up the middle and showed great burst for a big gain into the open field.

– Cowboys reserves DT Nick Hayden, LB Ernie Sims and DT Jerome Long each stuffed a running back at the line of scrimmage on three consecutive plays in team drills that would have went for no gain. RB Phillip Tanner was stopped the first time and then RB Lance Dunbar was stopped on back-to-back attempts.

– Safety Will Allen showed great hands and concentration to intercept a deep pass from Tony Romo to WR Miles Austin.Austinreached high to grab the football but it deflected off his hands and into the hands of Allen, who made a nice return.

– Rookie WR Terrance Williams has struggled the first two practices of his first NFL training camp. He dropped a pass in the open field from Tony Romo after getting free from CB Morris Claiborne. After the drop, TE Jason Witten yelled, “Damn it, 83! Come on!”

– Witten then led by example, beating coverage in the middle of the field to make a catch for a long gain on the right side on a deep pass from Tony Romo.

– CB Sterling Moore was flagged for defensive holding when he grabbed the arm of WR Cole Beasley from behind as he crossed the field.

– New special teams coach Rich Bisaccia has the same fire as previous special teams coach Joe DeCamillis. He dropped some colorful language as he screamed at RB Lance Dunbar on a kickoff return drill to “run the ball right.”

– During 7-on-7 drills, Tono Romo threw a pass behind TE Jason Witten, who was well-covered in the middle of the field.

– WR Dez Bryant took advantage of a mismatch in 7-on-7 drills against CB Sterling Moore for a big gain on a pass from Tony Romo.

– TE Colin Cochart dropped a pass in the right flat from QB Alex Tanney during 7-on-7 drills after the quarterback banked the pass off of the side of the yard marker.

– On one of DeMarcus Ware’s sacks in team drills, safety Barry Church had good coverage against WR Miles Austin as he crossed the field. That caused secondary coach Jerome Henderson to laud Church.

– WR Cole Beasley dropped a short pass on the left side from Tony Romo with CB Sterling Moore in tight coverage in team drills.

– After a standout practice on Day 1, RB Lance Dunbar struggled on Day 2. He was stuffed on back-to-back running plays for no gain and also dropped a screen pass in the right flat.

– In team drills, rookie center Travis Frederick didn’t snap the football as all the other offensive linemen left the line of scrimmage for a false start penalty.

– TE Dante Rosario never turned for a pass to the left flat from backup QB Kyle Orton and kept running up field as the pass sailed toward the sideline.

– LB Bruce Carter had a would-be sack of Tony Romo late in team drills.

– CB Morris Claiborne had a pass breakup against rookie WR Terrance Williams on a short pass to the right side that eventually hit Williams’ hands after contact between the two players.

– A pass intended for WR Dez Bryant along the sideline was caught by secondary coach Jerome Henderson, who raced down the sideline toward the end zone. CB Sterling Moore had tight coverage on Bryant.

– Center Phil Costa had a bad snap to QB Kyle Orton that hit the ground.

– A deflected pass from QB Alex Tanney at the line of scrimmage wobbled over the middle of the field but was still caught by rookie RB Joseph Randle.

– LB Taylor Reed had a would-be sack of QB Alex Tanney late in team drills.

– WR Tim Benford made a sliding catch over the middle of the field on a pass from QB Alex Tanney.

– After LT Tyron Smith’s false start late in team drills, coach Jason Garrett took out the entire first-team offense instead of just replacing Smith.

– WR Tim Benford fell down on his route to the right side as his feet became tangled with the feet of CB Sterling Moore.Moorebroke toward the football but couldn’t make the interception, causing secondary coach Jerome Henderson to yell, “come on, house that one.”

– Late in team drills, DL Ben Bass had a would-be sack of QB Nick Stephens.

– RT Jermey Parnell had a false start in a team take-off drill against air, and coach Jason Garrett had the players repeat the drill.

– During the early portion of the afternoon practice, DT Nick Hayden intercepted a pass from QB Nick Stephens after knocking the ball up in the air.

– Rookie center Travis Frederick took a few snaps at left guard during the early part of the afternoon practice.

– During the early portion of team drills, DT Ikponmwosa Igbinosun had a would-be sack of QB Nick Stephens.

– In the morning walk-through, coach Jason Garrett had the Cowboys line up again on offense, yelling, “You got to be able to know how to line up.”

– LB Bruce Carter and rookie safety J.J. Wilcox each had interceptions during the walk-through portion.

– New defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin made his unit repeat a play, yelling, “We can’t have busts like that.”

Ooh. I like that.
Yeah, it seems cool.

Depends how they respond. I wonder if these guys have shame. It didn't seem to bother them in previous years where he'd yank a guy. Maybe there will be a collective response.

New scheme, new coaching, newfound health: DeMarcus Ware might be better than ever for Cowboys

Posted Monday, Jul. 22, 2013

BY CARLOS MENDEZ
cmendez@star-telegram.com

OXNARD, Calif. — Anthony Spencer has this vision.

Of DeMarcus Ware.

Being even better than he is now.

It sounds scary. Spencer says it is possible. Ware, the seven-time Pro Bowl outside-linebacker-turned-defensive-end in the Dallas Cowboys’ new 4-3 defense, could become an even better player than he is now because of the new role he is playing and the coaching he is getting from respected NFL defensive line coach Rod Marinelli.

“He definitely harps on the little things,” Spencer said. “D-Ware’s already a great player, no doubt. But just working on those little things and getting sharper — just imagine D-Ware becoming a better player than he already is.

“And I believe that’s going to happen.”

Ware has another factor on his side: health.

He entered this training camp at full strength, unlike the last half of last season where seemingly week by week he began to wear down and tear down. He finished the year unable to lift his right arm. In terms of production, it was one of his three worst seasons. He had only 11.5 sacks after posting 19.5 the previous year and 15.5 the year before that. The four-time All-Pro also had his fewest quarterback pressures in four years, his fewest tackles for loss in three years and no pass breakups for the first time since he was a rookie.

It wasn’t much of a year to think about, and Ware doesn’t want to.

“Playing at least eight games where you’re not at least totally healthy, your mind sort of has to take over,” he said. “Your body is not doing what your mind is telling it to do. And now, being able to do everything — go out and play, feel whole again — feels really good.”

Ware sat out some of training camp last year because of a hamstring problem.

If he can stay healthy and keep the momentum into the regular season, the Cowboys’ transition to the 4-3 is bound to be more successful.

“DeMarcus Ware is a great football player,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We need the best version of DeMarcus Ware.”

That includes not only the player, but the person.

Middle linebacker Sean Lee said Ware’s presence as a person affects the defense favorably.

“He always has energy. He’s always out on the field loud, always excited, always getting the guys going,” Lee said. “So just to have that back — for me, I was out — and just to be around the guys again, the guys like DeMarcus, the guys on the D-line, the guys on the back end, it’s a ton of fun to be back playing football.”

The move to the 4-3 might be reason alone to make Ware smile. In the scheme, he is going to be a straight pass-rusher. In the 3-4, he also had pass-coverage responsibilities.

“Now you’re just putting your hand down in the dirt, reading formations. You’re pass rushing 90 percent, actually 99 — I would say 94 percent of the time,” he said, laughing at his joke.

But there’s no kidding about the results so far. For two days, Ware has practiced at full speed and dominated. He has ripped past tackle Tyron Smith in the first-team 11-on-11s. It might be no accident that the defense has looked strong against the offense in the first days of camp.

“DeMarcus’ full speed is probably the fastest I’ve ever seen,” Lee said. “To see him back again moving the way he was and feeling healthy, that’s just an awesome sight to see because of how athletic and how talented he is.

“It’s fun to see him back.”

And maybe better than ever. Scary. Possible.

Cowboys expect to get three offensive guards back on field by end of week

By Rainer Sabin / Reporter
rsabin@dallasnews.com
9:56 pm on July 22, 2013 |

OXNARD, Calif. — The Cowboys fielded a patchwork offensive line during the first two days of training camp. But by the end of the week, the unit charged with protecting quarterback Tony Romo and clearing holes for running back DeMarco Murray should be back to full strength.

Three guards – starters Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings as well as top reserve Ron Leary – should be cleared to practice by the end of the week. Bernadeau hurt his hamstring, Livings his foot and Leary his calf. All three players will be welcomed back by head coach Jason Garrett, who wants to create continuity along the offensive line.

“How much time do I want these guys playing together?” Garrett said. “A long time, particularly up front.”

Hopefully Bernadeau suffers a setback allowing Leary to grab his spot and not look back.

This kind of stuff is WHY I like Garrett and consider him better than fatty.
So "Not Wade" is reason to get excited? He is doing what most real coaches probably already do, we just don't hear about it.

For some absurd reason they seem to like Bernadeau better than Livings. Even Broaddus has pointed this out.

If anyone loses their job to our favorite eighth round draft pick from 2012, it is Livings.

Well, either way it's a win. Cutting Livings would free up more money, so there's that too.
