W2W4: Cowboys practice Day 2
July, 22, 2013
By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com
OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys will have their second practice of training camp on Monday.
Here's a preview:
Finding replacements: The Cowboys have one roster spot available and with the lost of defensive end Tyrone Crawford for the season to an Achilles tear and the uncertain return of defensive tackle Jay Ratliff (hamstring), team executive vice president said Stephen Jones said the team most likely will sign a defensive lineman. With Crawford and Ratliff out, the Cowboys are giving more snaps to Ike Igbinosun, Monte Taylor, Cameron Sheffield andJeris Pendleton.
Romo Day 2:Tony Romo was uneven during Sunday's first practice, getting a few throw tipped and having Sean Lee intercept a pass. It could be attributed to Romo being off for a few months as he recovered from minor back surgery. Romo did practice on Sunday in shells so he could get familiar with throwing passes again. Monday could be a better day for him after he shakes the rust off.
Running backs getting looks:DeMarco Murray looked very good in Day 1, hitting holes quickly and hard. He also did a good job of catching passes out of the backfield. The Cowboys are bringing rookie Joseph Randle along slowly because he missed the offseason workouts recovering from a thumb injury. Randle could get more looks in practice, but for now he's behind Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner.
Kyle Wilber moves up to first-team:Anthony Spencer is day-to-day with an achy knee, so Wilber is getting more snaps with the first-team defense. Wilber moved from outside linebacker to end in the offseason and bulked up to prepare for the role. If you attend practice on Monday afternoon, watch Wilber go up against the tackles and see how he reacts when balls are thrown out of the backfield.
Notes: The afternoon practice starts at 4 p.m. and ends around 6 p.m. PT. ... Sunday's practice had an attendance of 6,614. The Cowboys can't place Crawford on the PUP or the injured reserve list until the final cuts. Crawford will make the 53-man roster but then will get placed on IR, ending his season. ... The following players are on the active/non-football injury list: Demetress Bell, Ryan Cook, L.P. Ladouceur, Ronald Leary, Nate Livings and Lavasier Ruinei.
