W2W4: Cowboys practice Day 2

July, 22, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys will have their second practice of training camp on Monday.

Here's a preview:

Finding replacements: The Cowboys have one roster spot available and with the lost of defensive end Tyrone Crawford for the season to an Achilles tear and the uncertain return of defensive tackle Jay Ratliff (hamstring), team executive vice president said Stephen Jones said the team most likely will sign a defensive lineman. With Crawford and Ratliff out, the Cowboys are giving more snaps to Ike Igbinosun, Monte Taylor, Cameron Sheffield andJeris Pendleton.

Romo Day 2:Tony Romo was uneven during Sunday's first practice, getting a few throw tipped and having Sean Lee intercept a pass. It could be attributed to Romo being off for a few months as he recovered from minor back surgery. Romo did practice on Sunday in shells so he could get familiar with throwing passes again. Monday could be a better day for him after he shakes the rust off.

Running backs getting looks:DeMarco Murray looked very good in Day 1, hitting holes quickly and hard. He also did a good job of catching passes out of the backfield. The Cowboys are bringing rookie Joseph Randle along slowly because he missed the offseason workouts recovering from a thumb injury. Randle could get more looks in practice, but for now he's behind Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner.

Kyle Wilber moves up to first-team:Anthony Spencer is day-to-day with an achy knee, so Wilber is getting more snaps with the first-team defense. Wilber moved from outside linebacker to end in the offseason and bulked up to prepare for the role. If you attend practice on Monday afternoon, watch Wilber go up against the tackles and see how he reacts when balls are thrown out of the backfield.

Notes: The afternoon practice starts at 4 p.m. and ends around 6 p.m. PT. ... Sunday's practice had an attendance of 6,614. The Cowboys can't place Crawford on the PUP or the injured reserve list until the final cuts. Crawford will make the 53-man roster but then will get placed on IR, ending his season. ... The following players are on the active/non-football injury list: Demetress Bell, Ryan Cook, L.P. Ladouceur, Ronald Leary, Nate Livings and Lavasier Ruinei.

I asked a Cowboys source about John Abraham and didn't get indication that he'd be a fit here.

Of course not. Floyd either.
I have the feeling that if an early 2000's Warren Sapp were available for this defense our front office would say he wasn't a good fit

Anthony Spencer says it's a bone bruise that's hurting him. Same thing from offseason. Says he aggravated iron conditioning test.

Anthony Spencer has a bone bruise on left knee and said he will talk with team doctors this afternoon to get further evaluations.

Asked if he's concerned about the injury, especially if it happened just from running, Spence says yeah, it's a concern.

Jason Garrett cussing out the tackles and tight ends.

Todd Archer ‏@toddarcher 24m
Second day in row there is no alternating between Doug Free and Jermey Parnell.

Carlos A. Mendez ‏@calexmendez 25m
The three receiver set is Dez, miles, Williams. Lee drops back so far, he winds up on Miles over the middle.

James Hanna appears to be nicked up and that's a reason why Escobar is getting time.

Bryan Broaddus ‏@BryanBroaddus 31m
Beasley has been really nice on his releases but Albright walked outside and erased him with his length. Tough to get around.

Carlos A. Mendez ‏@calexmendez 32m
Cameron Sheffield and Ike I are the second DEs. Right and left.

Bryan Broaddus ‏@BryanBroaddus 35m
It's fun to see Witten and Lee even battle in a walk thru, neither give an inch. Carter with an INT vs Witten on a vertical release.

Todd Archer ‏@toddarcher 40m
Not going to get carried away but JJ Wilcox with a pick in walkthrough.

Romo is totally coaching the receivers as QBs and WRs work by themselves. He is using coach Derek Dooley as a defender.

Charean Williams ‏@NFLCharean 1h
Monte Kiffin is not happy with his defense. Yelling at them to "get it right."

Bryan Broaddus ‏@BryanBroaddus 1h
Still no Livings or Bernadeau or Leary with the walk thru offense. Young guys getting early reps with defense. Taylor and Sheffield at DE

LDE was actually pretty well set just a few weeks ago and now it's good and fucked up.

Cowboys hamstrung again by injury

July, 22, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. – Second-year tight end James Hanna did not take part in Monday’s walkthrough because of a hamstring injury.

“We don’t think his injury is really, really significant,” coach Jason Garrett said, “and he’ll be back soon enough.”

On the face of it, Hanna’s hamstring injury is not that much of a concern. Maybe he will practice in a day or two and it will be a short absence.

But it’s another hamstring injury. Hanna joins Jay Ratliff and Mackenzy Bernadeau on the list of players with strained hamstring. And those get added on to the guys who had troubles with hamstring injuries last year, like Matt Johnson, whose rookie season was a washout largely because of two hamstring injuries. Miles Austin has had hamstring strains the two previous seasons, even if he did not miss a game.

There have been more hamstring injuries as well.

Garrett does not view the hamstring issues as an epidemic, but he said the team has looked at how many other teams have suffered to get a comparison. On the teams he has been on Garrett said hamstring injuries are “probably the No. 1 injury people have. There’s a lot of running going on in football.”

“You’re always evaluating that, evaluating all parts of your strength and conditioning program,” Garrett said. “We’ve looked at injury reports and, ‘Could we prevent this one? Could we prevent that one? What can we do better?' That’s something Coach (Mike) Woicik and his crew are always talking about and thinking about better ways to do things, and hopefully those numbers will be minimized the best we can.”

Cowboys staying with young defensive linemen

July, 22, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys have a shortage of defensive linemen with the loss of defensive end Tyrone Crawford (torn Achilles) for the season and with the uncertain return of defensive tackle Jay Ratliff (hamstring) to training camp.

Cowboys officials have one roster spot to fill and will try to find a defensive lineman, but not a veteran.

Anthony Hargrove was on the roster during the offseason workouts before the Cowboys released him, but a team source said the team isn't interested in bringing him back.

For now, the Cowboys will use Monte Taylor, Cameron Sheffield, Ben Bass and Nick Hayden on the second-and-third teams. Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said he's not ready to mix and match defensive ends and tackles because it's too early in camp for that and he's still trying to install his scheme.

"We could move some people around like the Packers," Kiffin said after Monday's morning walkthrough. "Let them come back and play where they were in the spring. Let's see if we got better over the summer."

It's ridiculous how fast and often we have hamstring issues. I know every team does to a degree, but like 75% of our injuries seem to be the damn hamstring.
