I didn't care at all for the Frederick pick. But now that you have the guy who you say is going to protect Romo, why not let him perfect his position, adjust to his QB, and be the rock in the middle of the line that you drafted him to be? This getting cute and trying to make up for your own follies by messing up a good thing is the Jones standard. Keep the guy at C and do what you have to to fix the frikkin guard position.

Oh yeah, you've really learned some difficult lessons in the offseason. :facepalm

:lol

What?! How is Barry Church proof of anything? He hasn't played a single down of football since week 3 of last season, so how exactly does goof son know that he's come back strong?

This kind of idiocy makes caring less about this team so easy.
Lookit, Church looked great in shorts and t-shirts against the back up QBs this offseason.

He's back and stronger than ever, okay!

Damn...this thread is morbid already. I think it's time for me to get my homer on so there is balance in the universe.

Yeah, it's like a divorced wives club in here. Each woman trying to out do the last with their tale of woe. Jerry's that painted up, two-bit tramp down the street that ruined all of their marriages.

I like it. Fun times.

This is exactly what I don't get. The dude is a rookie first round pick, let him become a great center before you start jacking around with his position. I hate the idea of making a rookie learn multiple positions. I think you stunt a players growth doing that shit. Instead of having him master a position, you have a guy who sort of knows how to play two positions.

Nothing 3 weeks of light workouts on the side won't fix...for a couple of days.
Whether he's sitting on the sidelines or on the field, it won't really make a difference.

We're going to get very little production from him either way.

Camp observations: Tony Romo, Dez Bryant

July, 22, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys opened training camp practices on Sunday afternoon with a brief welcome celebration that included performances by the team’s cheerleaders but a planned skydiving skit was scrapped because of the overcast weather.

Instead Rowdy handed the game ball to the Oxnard mayor to get things going.

And now on to far more important details:

** Tony Romo’s first completion of the practice went to WR Dez Bryant on an underneath route, after Bryant beat CB Brandon Carr to the spot. Carr rebounded on the next play by knocking away a Romo throw to WR Terrance Williams.

** The structure of practice has changed with the new coaches. The main special teams’ drills are now run in the middle of the workout instead of at the beginning. The first part of practice is for rookies and selected veterans with the full team getting together after 30 minutes.

** New defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is stressing turnovers. In the morning walkthrough, S Matt Johnson and LB Ernie Sims came up with interceptions. LB Sean Leeintercepted Romo on a tipped ball in the afternoon and S Barry Church and CB Brandon Underwood had fumble recoveries on back to back plays in the afternoon.

** C Travis Frederick had one poor exchange with Romo on the day but was clean otherwise. What the rookie needs to work on his staying off the ground. He was looking up way to often after getting knocked off balance. The obvious danger is injury to teammates during practice.

** With Nate Livings, Mackenzy Bernadeau and Ronald Leary missing practice, the starting offensive line was (left to right) Tyron Smith, Kevin Kowalski, Frederick, David Arkin andDoug Free.

** Jason Garrett did something he probably hasn’t done since 2004 as a player: take snaps at quarterback. He worked as the scout-team QB vs. the defense in on-air drills in the afternoon and completed all four passes. His best throw came on a screen to CB Morris Claiborne, who was a receiver on the play.

** DE DeMarcus Ware looked like, well, Ware, even at a new position. The most impressive play? He nearly batted down a screen pass to DeMarco Murray at the line of scrimmage and then was able to track down the running back from behind.

** WR Dwayne Harris had a poor moment in the morning walkthrough when he ran the wrong route, earning an ‘Are you kidding me?” from Garrett. In the afternoon he was able to break free on a bubble screen, zig-zagging his way through the defense.

** QB Kyle Orton was sharper in his first training camp practice than he was in the mini-camp when he was taking the first-team snaps in Romo’s absence. He was able to place a pass just over Johnson to Harris on the sideline and do the same to LB DeVonte Hollomanon a throw to Cole Beasley.

** Holloman made an athletic interception of Orton earlier, dropping in coverage and leaping to come down with the pick in front of TE Andre Smith.
** RB Lance Dunbar was particularly sharp. In team run drills, Dunbar was able to zip through the first-team defense on his first carry and then jitter through traffic on his second. He took the second-team work behind Murray with Phillip Tanner getting the next look. Rookie Joseph Randle was the fourth back in his first practice since the draft because of a thumb injury.

Which is what you'd expect a journeyman like Bernadeau to do.

Frederick is a Center, let's make sure he'll be a good one by having him learn another position on his first week of training camp.

I understand versatility with a backup. Frederick is going to be a starter from day one here. Pick a goddamn position and let him play there.

I agree. For as much trouble as we've had at center since Gurode's departure you'd think developing a a rapport between Romo and Frederick would be a top priority.

Let him play C. We undervalue the position of C. When we were rolling we had Stepnoski and Donaldson. Now we have Gurode playing good for a bit, but then we have settled for a guy like Costa.

Mountain-running Romo says his weight is where it's been every year going into training camp

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo said he has his weight where he’s had it each year coming into training camp, weighing in on the question about his weight Sunday.

“I got my weight where I’ve been to each year coming into camp,” Romo said. “I feel good about that. You just keep carrying it over, though. You’re always looking to be in great shape.”

The Cowboys list Romo at 236 on the opening roster of training camp. That’s 6 pounds heavier than the 230 he was listed at in the regular season last year.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Romo is only 1 pound over his playing weight and looks “really lean to me,” considering the quarterback was unable to work out as much as normal during a recovery from surgery to remove a cyst in his back.

Romo said he weighs between 227 and 230, “depending on the day you catch me.”

Romo said he spent the last two weeks in Southern California, working on his conditioning at a boot camp. It included running in the mountains.

“I recommend it, but not for as long, maybe,” he said. “It was great. It just got me where I needed to be.”
