Leary and Livings were not able to take the conditioning test, Garrett says.

Callahan says Frederick and Costa are going to play guard in the afternoon practice. Now that's info you don't normally get from Cowboys.

Stephen Jones talking to reporters. Says conditioning tests are tough on O linemen. Cuts more slack than with skill positions.

Tony Romo's listed weight of 236 was taken during OTAs. Jason Garrett says QB is down to "a pound above his prescribed playing weight."

God damn f'ing Romo is definitely gaining weight, I'm guessing he was only around 220-225 about 5 years ago when he was first taking over the position. The dude should not be 236 at 6-2.

Jay Ratliff placed on PUP list

Updated: July 21, 2013, 1:16 PM ET
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys have placed defensive tackle Jay Ratliff on the active/physically unable too perform list after he strained a hamstring in Saturday's conditioning test.

Ratliff, a four-time Pro Bowler, was limited to six games last season because of an ankle injury and eventual sports hernia surgery. He was also held back in this year's organized team activities and mini-camp in the hopes of keeping him healthy as switched to a new position in the Cowboys' move to the 4-3 defense.

Guard Mackenzy Bernadeau also was placed on the active/PUP list with a hamstring injury. He did not take part in the offseason at all because of shoulder surgery performed after last season.

It is the second straight year that Bernadeau has not been ready at the start of training camp. Knee and hip injuries kept him out of most of camp in 2012, but he started every game.

The Cowboys also placed center Ryan Cook, guard Nate Livings (foot), guard Ronald Leary (calf), long snapper L.P. Ladouceur (calf), tackle Demetress Bell and wide receiver Lavasier Tuinei on the active/non-football injury list.

The Cowboys made official the signings of Bell, Tuinei and quarterback Alex Tanney on Sunday after they passed their physicals.

Last year, running back Felix Jones, safety Brodney Pool and wide receiver Andre Holmes failed the conditioning test and were not cleared to practice until they passed it a few days later. Pool was cut shortly after beginning to practice.
I said two seasons ago this guy was already started down the other side of the hill. He is at the same stage that previous malingers on the squad have attained. Get the contract then begin the injury process followed the next season missing training camp then start every third game before going out with an injury. Next phase sit on the bench for as long as the team will keep you. This exercise will get you three years pay with about seven games played in total. Not a bad system.

We need to cut Ratliff and give that money to either Melton or Atkins next year.

James Hanna is working with the starters as the No. 2 TE. He's a talent, which is why I don't get the Gavin Escobar pick.
No one gets it, Tim.

Last few reps both Claiborne and Carr have been playing much tighter to the receivers. Really plays to their strengths.
Saw some of this last year but not nearly enough, IMO.

You'd put on extra weight too if you had Jerry Jones building the OL in front of you.

That extra weight will come in handy to withstand the inevitable pounding he'll receive.

That's probably true although he won't be as mobile, with that said I'm sure he'll lose some weight as camp goes on.

As an aside, I think we're slowly building a pretty solid OL for the future, if we can add one more stud, be it a G or RT, I think we'll really have something. Romo probably won't see the benefits of it but the next QB will.

I'd actually like to see us add another G over a RT. Romo is nimble enough to avoid outside rushers, especially those from his front side. Where he struggles is when there is good pressure up the middle. That's where he spazzes out and makes most of his mistakes.

Garrett Talks Injuries, Romo's Shape After First Walkthrough

Posted 16 minutes ago

OXNARD, Calif. – Head coach Jason Garrett will once again need to deal with a battered group of offensive lineman to begin training camp after a couple players were lost following the conditioning test. Garrett said Sunday that offensive linemen Mackenzy Bernadeau, Ryan Cook andDemetress Bell won’t be able to practice initially after running the test, while Ronald Leary andNate Livings didn’t run the test at all after previous injuries.

“A couple of those guys have to deal with the kind of conditioning they’re in,” Garrett said. “That’s really why we do the test. We feel like it’s a good indicator as to whether or not a player is football ready to practice at the pace the Dallas Cowboys are going to practice at.

“Each of those guys is out for a different reason. We have a plan for each of those guys to get them healthy and get them in the kind of condition they need to be in to practice as quickly as they can.”

Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff, who’s dealt with a plethora of injuries since the start of last season, alsocame out of the conditioning test with a hamstring injury. Garrett said Ratliff worked hard during his rehab and wanted to run the test yesterday to see where he was at and how fast he could practice. Ratliff will be getting an MRI and will be evaluated afterward.

Garrett said there are explanations and excuses as to why each of those players either couldn’t perform the conditioning test or failed it, but he’s more concerned about getting them back than focusing on what the problem was.

He said the team did an outstanding job overall during the conditioning test, which he called challenging. Garrett was particularly impressed with DeMarcus Ware’s shape and his offseason work after various upper body and arm injuries held him back in 2012.

“He has a green light to go, but like with a lot of our players, we’ll continue to monitor them, see how they do each and every day and look for spots to get them a break if they need one,” Garrett said. “He was pretty impressive in that conditioning test yesterday. For a defensive lineman to run as well as he runs and be in the kind of shape he’s in, outstanding, great example for the rest of our team.”

The injuries will give other young offensive linemen the opportunity to run with the starters and backups and get more reps than they would otherwise have gotten. Garrett said Travis Frederickand Phil Costa could both get work at guard after spending the spring at center.

“We have a long way to go,” Garrett said. “We have a lot of football to be played before we play the Giants in the opener, and we have to do the right things as an organization to get these guys out there and practicing when they’re ready to do that.”

Garrett also was impressed with how Tony Romo looked after practicing for the first time with the team after his offseason back surgery. Garrett liked the way Romo stayed involved with the team during the spring, which he said can be difficult for a player when he’s not playing.

“The first thing he needed to do was get himself in shape, and it’s a hard thing to do when you come off a back injury because you’ve got to almost my definition be a little bit immobile,” Garrett said.

Garrett didn’t want to get into details about Romo’s playing weight, but he said he’s right around it. Romo’s listed at 236 pounds currently.

“He’s actually a pound over his prescribed playing weight right now,” Garrett said. “He got his weight down. He’ll tell you right now, he just has to continue to do the conditioning stuff necessary.”

Tony Romo listed at 236 pounds, but lighter now
July, 21, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. – Quarterback Tony Romo is heavier than middle linebacker Sean Lee, according to their weights on the Cowboys’ official roster.

Romo is listed at 236 pounds, six pounds heavier than last season and 13 pounds heavier than he weighed three years ago.

That weight was measured during organized team activities, according to a team spokesman. Romo, whose offseason conditioning routine was interrupted by surgery to remove a cyst from his back, has made a concerted effort to slim down in recent weeks, including running mountains before the team reported to training camp.

“I don’t want to get into the details of what his playing weight is supposed to be, but he’s right around it,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s actually a pound over his prescribed playing weight right now. He got his weight down.

“He’ll tell you right now that he just has to continue doing the conditioning stuff necessary. When you come off an injury, that’s always a big concern. You’re trying to get the injury healed, but you’ve got to make sure the conditioning is right. He’s worked very hard at it. He’ll continue to do that throughout camp.”
