While the Cubs' Matt Garza currently pitches in the National League, Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com says that he could soon return to the AL. Levine reports that the Rangers and Blue Jays are the "front runners" in acquiring Garza's services for the balance of 2013. Though the Rangers have frequently been mentioned as pursuers of Garza, who figures to be the top starter available, the Jays have generally not been placed atop the list. Nevertheless, Levine says that Toronto has been very active in scouting the righty over his last three starts. As for Texas, Levine says that power-hitting prospect Mike Olt would probably be included in a deal.
I would have been really stoked to get Olt in a deal this time last year but the shine has come off him a bit since then. I'll still be happy if that is what Garza fetches though. They don't have any 3B prospects with his kind of pedigree. Have to believe the vision problems he had earlier this season are the main reason for his terrible numbers in Round Rock so far. Git 'er done, Theo.

If there's ever a poll of who the best Texas Ranger of all time is, will Chris Davis get votes?

Why would he? He's not a Ranger.

Every team would have done the same thing with him that the Rangers did. He had multiple chances and never showed the ability to hit major league pitchers like he is.

Francona is a better manager than I gave him credit for.

Garza Informed He'll Likely Be Traded

by Edward Creech, Jul 14 at 3:30 PM CST

The Cubs have informed Matt Garza he will likely be traded after contract talks failed to produce an extenstion, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The Rangers and Indians, according to Heyman, are clearly interested in Garza while the Red Sox are waiting upon some clarity on the return of injured starter Clay Buchholz. The Cardinals, meanwhile, are believed to be a stealth player for the fifth-ranked free agent on MLBTR's 2014 Free Agent Power Rankings. Yesterday, we learned the Blue Jays are "front runners" in the Garza trade derby, but Heyman writes there is little to no evidence, at the moment, they are actively involved.

Chris Archer with a CG shutout today. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure he said "this one was for Ed Guapo" in his post game interview.

:lol

He did well. More power to him if he puts it together. Has pretty good stuff but traditionally has put too many guys on base.

The Cardinals could be interesting. They have a shitload of pitching. Not sure what they'd be willing to give up for a rental Garza though. They have a few pitchers who I'd be happy to get in return.

The Cards are fun to watch...just a bunch of grinders. Matheney deserves props.

Kind of hate to do it because he is under team control for the next 3 years, but I'd look to deal Parnell. Dodgers and Red Sox have interest.

The last 2 weeks of the Rays schedule has been been against bottom feeders, but it's nice to see they put it together and took care of business. 2.5 games out of first and leading the WC is pretty impressive with how spotty both the bullpen and then the starting rotation were for months, arguably one of the best first half pitchers in baseball in Cobb has been on the DL for over a month and Price spent a month of his own on the DL.

2nd half schedule is going to be brutal though. If they can keep rolling through it they'll be battle tested better than anyone going into the playoffs.

I'd think that if you can get a prospect who projects to an every day piece in the near future, you do it.

The Mets have a surplus of young arms, you'd like to be able to cash them in for bats without breaking up Harvey/Wheeler. The Bullpen is kinda the last thing a non-contending team needs so while I do like Parnell I'd have to make the trade if the offer was good enough.

I don't think we'll get Jackie Bradley for him, but that was a name that came up with the Red Sox. The Tigers have two guys I would be interested in with Asivail Garcia and Nick Castellanos. I'll take Joc Pederson from the Dodgers.

That is a pretty good list of prospects there. Consider it a major win if the Mets land any of those guys for a closer. Because of the 3 more years of team control you mentioned, at what I assume is a relatively low salary, it's probably not out of the question though. It would be a little surprising, but not flat out shocking.

All Star Game starters will be announced later and it sounds like it's expected to be Harvey for the NL and Scherzer for the AL. Not surprised. Harvey has been great and is the hometown kid and Leyland is completely biased towards his guys. How else can you explain Jonny Peralta getting picked as an All Star?

I am certainly going for the higher end guys. We've had some luck getting players back. I mean we got Wheeler for Beltran in a walk year and then D'Arnaud, Syndergaard, Buck, and Becerra for Dickey and Thole. We've done well getting talent back.

While Texas doesn't have as deep a farm system as St. Louis or Toronto, it has more major league-ready talent, and that makes Texas the favorite to land Garza at some point this week.

Corner infielder Mike Olt is likely to be part of any deal
, per Levine, and it makes sense. Third base is an immediate area of need for the Cubs, and Olt is ready to step in and handle the position on a daily basis.

Olt alone won't get a deal done, but Texas has enough prospects in the upper levels of the system and in the major leagues (RHP Justin Grimm and LHP Martin Perez) to put together the most attractive package for Garza, one from which the Cubs would see immediate results
--------------------------------------------------

I'll be thrilled if they get Olt plus someone like Martin Perez but I have a hard time imagining that the Rangers will do that. Not for a guy who is going to be a free agent after the season. And we are talking about Matt Garza here. Very good pitcher, but certainly not an elite starter.

I am kind of curious to see if the Rangers may think of dealing Andrus.

I don't know. They gave him a pretty sizable extension and his production isn't close to living up to it.
