Jerry Jones: Cowboys need something like drafting Troy Aikman 'to happen again'

In the middle of a lengthy response Tuesday morning, Jerry Jones said one sentence that perfectly described the Cowboys' 2015 season.

"Fourth pick in the draft, we've earned it, which is terrible," the Cowboys owner and general manager said.

While Jones is excited about what the organization can acquire by picking early in each round, the disappointment is obvious, especially considering Jones "thought we had our best off-season in many years, maybe even the best" in 2015.

How the Cowboys use the fourth overall selection will be critical for the future of the franchise. Drafting a quarterback could give Dallas Tony Romo's heir apparent. Grabbing the wrong QB, however, leaves the Cowboys without Romo's successor and prevents them from landing a potential impact player at another position.

Jones said Tuesday morning that he's comfortable taking a quarterback fourth overall.

"In no way am I saying that we will draft a quarterback," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan's Shan and RJ show [KRLD-FM], "but a top quarterback here at that level could have maybe done the job for us this year when we lost Romo for a period of time.

"So that's helping now. I'd say that our backup quarterback situation, which I don't in any way want to rule out [Kellen] Moore, is the best now-move we could make."

What does Jones think is the Cowboys' biggest need?

"We've got to get the best player," he said. "We hear it. It's a cliché, but we hope, and we haven't even really scratched the surface in terms of an overall evaluation of what is the best player. But we're up here at the top of the draft.

"Frankly, I don't know that we've been here since the day that I walked through the door and there sat Troy Aikman. Tongue in cheek, didn't we do a brilliant job of preparing for the future by selecting brilliantly Troy Aikman with the No. 1 pick? But he had been sitting there and then by the time the evaluation process was over, he was the best quarterback. Did we need a quarterback or did we need a quarterback in '89? And he was the best quarterback to come along in years, and of course, it panned out.

"We need something like that to happen again around here."

Yes, and hiring a real coach and letting him handle all the football aspects of the team needs to happen again too.

I read some other quotes where Jerry basically refers to backup QB as an immediate impact position. At least Jerry seems to be willing to recognize how important it is to get a good young QB in Dallas. Now it just depends on how he actually ends up addressing it.
