Travis Frederick could wind up at guard

Posted by Josh Alper on July 8, 2013, 9:53 AM EDT

When the Cowboys drafted Travis Frederick in the first round, there were two widespread reactions.

The first was that the Cowboys may have reached to take Frederick at that point in the draft. The second grew out of the first as many inferred that Frederick’s selection gave him the prime position in the battle for the starting center job in 2013.

He may have that position, but nothing is set in stone yet. In a preview of the offensive line on the Cowboys website, Rowan Kavner suggests that Frederick could wind up switching to guard if that “proves a better fit” for the rest of the line. Hulk Hogan’s prospective son-in-law Phil Costa would likely handle the center job if such a switch were made while right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau cedes his spot in the starting lineup to Frederick. There doesn’t seem to be any suggestion that Frederick won’t wind up as a starter, although, again, nothing’s written in stone.

However the Cowboys decide to line up come the fall, the players selected for the lineup have to be more effective than they were during the 2012 season. Interior line play was a serious weakness for Dallas and improving it will be essential to a better showing from the offensive unit as a whole.

If this happens we are doing it wrong again.

And don't even start with "putting the best five on the field". Costa should not be a part of any line's best five.

This hypothesis is not even close to being credible and is a wasted read.

Jerry has been pretty adamant about Frederick remaining at Center. The only talk I hear about him playing guard is from these writers who routinely get the idea shot down when they bring it up to anybody with the team.

Jerry's first ramble about Frederick specifically mentions flexing him because of Costa:

“We’re going to put a base in there where you don’t have a knock-back issue,” Jones said. “[Offensive coordinator] Bill Callahan is a big center guy. After your left tackle, he likes the center position as far as the best players on the offensive line. Well, we’ve got Costa. We’re pretty proud of Costa, frankly. Well, can this guy play guard? You bet he can.”

A bit ambiguous whether Jerry means Costa or Frederick could play guard, but I think "this guy" refers to Frederick.

RHG then chimes in:

Added head coach Jason Garrett: “Because he has position flex and has played a full season at either spot, we feel good about maybe plugging him in at either spot and having him compete with the guys on our roster. We haven’t made that determination right now. We like competition, as you guys know, and he’ll certainly be very much in the mix.”

And that also implies Frederick could be a guard.

I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility. Costa and his new ties to Hulkamania make Teh J proud.

On the plus side for Costa, if TNA isn't out of business in a year he'll have somewhere to go when his career in football is over.

I agree. As bad as Livings is, I think he's better than Costa. If the team thinks otherwise, I think it's misevaluating.

Maybe the team should have gotten a guard in free agency if it feels that badly about its starters that it has to move it's first round pick away from his natural position.
