Why Cowboys WR Brice Butler can't get on the field
Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- When the Dallas Cowboys traded for wide receiver Brice Butler earlier this season, they were hoping to find a big-play threat to fill in while Dez Bryant was out with a broken foot.
Butler's first reception for the Cowboys went for 67 yards against the New Orleans Saints, but he suffered a hamstring injury that has largely rendered him ineffective. He caught two passes for 41 yards Oct. 25 against the New York Giants and has not played in a game since after the hamstring strain flared up again.
Butler is now healthy enough to play, but the Cowboys have stuck with Devin Street as the fifth receiver on game day.
Street’s ability to play special teams has been a big reason why, but he has two holding penalties in the last three games and had a key fumble last week against the Washington Redskins.
From listening to Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, however, there doesn’t appear to be much thought to add Butler to the 46-man roster.
“Right now we feel like Street can contribute in more different ways,” Garrett said.
If the Cowboys don’t use Butler, then he will be inactive Sunday for the seventh straight game. And while the Cowboys only gave up a seventh-round pick to get him, the fact that he can’t sniff the field for a team that struggles offensively is disconcerting.
