It’s hard to grasp how truly awful Josh Hamilton was on Tuesday night. He came to the plate five times. Here’s what happened:

  • First Inning: No score, Mike Trout on first, nobody out, Hamilton grounds into a double play;
  • Third Inning: Mariners up 2-1, Mike Trout on first, nobody out, Hamilton grounds into a double play;
  • Fifth Inning: Mariners up 2-1, Peter Bourjos on second, Mike Trout on first, one out, Hamilton grounds into a double play;
  • Seventh Inning: Mariners up 2-1, Chirs Ianetta on second, two outs, Hamilton strikes out;
  • Ninth Inning: Score tied 2-2, Erik Aybar on second, Chris Ianetta on first, two out, Hamilton strikes out.
Those were a lot of chances to tie the game, give the Angels the lead or, at the very least, keep an inning going and let someone else help out. Instead he left seven men on base, Anaheim lost in extra innings and Hamilton experienced perhaps his worst night in an Angels uniform.
For those of you who want a statistical measure of this badness, note that Hamilton’s Win Probability Added (WPA), which measures how much a player contributed to his team’s win or loss on a given day, was -.477. That means he, all by his lonesome, reduced the Angels’ chances of winning last night’s game by 47.7%.
On the bright side: only four more years to go on that contract after this one.

Glad everybody is getting to see what we put up with for 2/3 of a season.

We're still a few games over .500 and about 7 out of first, but I'm about ready to call for a fire sale and rebuild for next year. The starters have been horrid all year except for Cobb and, until a month ago, Moore. The bullpen is atrocious except for the stud Alex Torres who should be in the rotation. Time to move on from some of these guys.

Price will probably be traded in the offseason to get his value back up, but Hellickson and everyone else needs to go.

The pitcher you should want is Alex Torres. He's 25, 5 years of control of him and he's cheap. Oh, and he's been dominant. He dominated AAA earlier this season and then came up to be the long reliever in the pen and in 18 innings he is 2-0, an era of 0 and 24 k's.

Josh: If they don’t think I care, they’re mistaken

Josh Hamilton made eight outs in five plate appearances on Tuesday, dropping his batting average to .213, and was showered by boos from his home fans. They were loud, too. Louder than when he was a visiting Rangers player, and louder than at any point during this nightmarish season – and he’s been booed a lot this season.

Asked about it Wednesday, prior to a game in which he was dropped from second to seventh in the batting order, Hamilton said: “I can’t blame them.”

But there’s a segment of the Angels fan base that doesn’t believe Hamilton cares enough – and that’s where he disagrees.

“I’m not going to break my bat or do stuff like that on the field because you have kids watching,” Hamilton said. “If they don’t think I care, then they’re mistaken, because it hurts me more than it hurts anybody not to be performing. I’ve done it for years against the Angels, and now I’m a part of the Angels and I want to do it for the Angels. I’m just going to keep doing the best I can.”

Hamilton’s best is nowhere near good enough yet. Mike Scioscia has given him four days off to clear his head. He’s moved him from fourth to fifth, from fifth to second and now, from second to seventh – a spot he hasn’t hit in since 2009. And Hamilton himself has tried reverting to the past, trying to summon the simpler approach from 2008-09 and the pregame routine from 2010.

Nothing has worked. Through his first 69 games with the Angels, Hamilton holds a .213/.269/.388 slash line, with 10 homers, 24 RBIs and a .657 OPS that ranks 113th among Major League qualifiers.

He’s been positive all year, picking out small victories within each plate appearance that he hopes can help him take steps forward.

But the longer the season goes on, the harder that becomes.

“When you’re struggling and you stay in that spot when you feel like you’ve done about anything you can to get out of it, the confidence starts to waver some,” Hamilton said. “Guys have been great, encouraging, things like that – coaching staff, everybody.”

Scioscia’s latest lineup change put Peter Bourjos back in the leadoff spot and dropped Mike Trout to second, where the Angels’ skipper prefers he hit. It came on a day an opposing lefty – Joe Saunders – was on the mound, but it sounds like Hamilton will also bat seventh against righties.

“I think it’s going to be good for him to not worry about hitting in the middle of the lineup – just go down there and play baseball for a little bit and find his stroke,” Scioscia said.

“There’s no doubt that there are confidence issues with every player, there’s always frustration that every player feels, and it’s very clear right now, that as this season has progressed, and it’s taken more and more time for Josh to get comfortable in the batter’s box, that we need to do something to alleviate a little pressure.”

Hamilton provided some positive signs on Monday, going 2-for-5 with a long two-run homer. But there have been a lot of those days, almost all of which have been followed up by another bad performance. The latest was three groundball double plays and two strikeouts.

One step forward, two steps back.

“That’s the baffling part,” Hamilton said. “In the past, it’s either clicked at some point or you get a couple bloop hits and you kind of start moving in that direction. It goes back to the biggest thing, which is just being confident. And it’s tough to do when you’re not being successful.”

The angels said that they are one bad streak from becoming sellers at the deadline. Good luck with that. Nobody is going to take on the contracts you need them to and you would be signing your own walking papers if you trade Trout.

They can trade guys if they're willing to eat money. Hell, they found someone to take Vernon Wells and his $40m.

Its amazing what a sweep will do for your psyche. In the middle of an incredibly tough stretch of series for the Rangers and we are 6-1 against Oakland and St Louis. Just have the Yankees and Reds left.

Highly doubt that will happen with the amount of extra baggage that Josh has or the injury and age concerns of Pujols.

Marmol designated for assignment

Cubs call up Bogusevic to replace former closer on roster

By Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 6/25/2013 12:36 P.M. ET

The Cubs designated reliever Carlos Marmol for assignment on Tuesday. To take his place on the active roster, the team promoted outfielder Brian Bogusevic to the big league squad.
:towel

About time they cut ties with that trainwreck. Addition by subtraction definitely comes into play here. Bogusevic's promotion is nothing to get excited about at all but the fact that I don't have to see Marmol out there blowing 3 run leads anymore is outstanding.

Have you guys been paying attention to this Puig guy in LA. That SOB is red hot.

The Braves may have to throw at his head tonight to break his OODA Loop.
He's still killing it. Apparently his nickname is ManBearPuig, which is pretty damn funny. It's an old South Park reference for anyone who is unfamiliar.

Teixeira and Granderson tweeted about their injuries/progress and no one from the Yankees organization said shit about it. Obviously they're hoping against hope that ARod's hip never recovers and he's forced to retire. They would be able to recoup a lot of his salary via the insurance policies they've taken out on him if it goes down that way. Apparently ARod only recently started a twitter account and it seems as though the sole purpose is to tweak the Yankees brass by talking about his recovery/getting doctor's clearance. He has every intention of hanging around and collecting every penny of that contract. Can't really blame him for that, but he's just such a f'ing prick and I really think Cashman fantasizes about smashing his face in with a lead pipe.

Cubs are about to start selling off everything not nailed to the floor. Pretty much every team in contention was scouting Garza's start at Milwaukee yesterday (7.0 IP, 1 ER, 10 K). He's going to fetch the best prospect package since he'll have multiple suitors. Doubtful he'll bring a real elite prospect but should get a couple guys that will at least make it to the Majors.

Scott Feldman is drawing interest too (want him back, Rangers? for a price you can have him), along with guys like David DeJesus, and relief pitcher James Russell. The biggest bonus in my mind, though, is Kevin Gregg. They signed him to a minor league deal after he was let go by the LAD and he's been lights out as a closer. Anything they get in return for a guy that cost them essentially nothing in April is gravy. The Braves and other teams are reportedly interest in trading for Gregg.
