He is a great KO return guy, I am not sure how much punt returning he did in Washington but if he can catch it he is great in the open field.

I think he is better as a runner than Dunbar but not sure if he is better as a pass catcher, he can catch but not sure about his route running ability.

OVERVIEW

2014: Played 12 games. Second on team with 560 rushing yards. Led team with seven rushing touchdowns. 2013: Played in 11 games. Had more than 1,000 all-purpose yards while serving as primary kick returner. 2012: Freshman All-SEC. Played all 13 games. Finished fourth on the team in rushing. High School: U.S. Army All-American.

PRO DAY RESULTS

40-yard dash: 4.49 and 4.45 seconds

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS
Features a devastating jump-cut that torments defenders in space. One of the best "make-you-miss" types in this draft. Improvisation-oriented athlete in space. Able to change directions at a moment's notice and multiple times during one play. Great vision. Looks past first move and focuses on second move. Instant burst through the crease to the third level. Ran for 15-plus yards on 13.6 percent of his carries over the last two years. Can be shuffled around the field as a mismatch weapon. Was a kick returner for all three years at A&M.

WEAKNESSES
Very slightly built runner. More of an "offensive weapon" than a true running back. Ran as an off-set back from shotgun. Is seen frequently looking for the sideline with ball in his hands. Little to no strength as a runner. Can't break tackles and churn out extra yardage. When defenses get hands on him, the play is over. Too small to be factor as pass blocker. Benefited from running out of spread offense, allowing him to see his share of six-man boxes.

DRAFT PROJECTION
Round 6 or 7

SOURCES TELL US
"He will have to prove to NFL teams that he can work from the slot, too. If he can show that he has value from the slot to go with an occasional carry and full-time kick return responsibilities, then he adds to his value." -- NFC East scout

NFL COMPARISON De'Anthony Thomas

BOTTOM LINE
All-purpose running back with an ability to hit big plays from time to time, but no value as an every-down player. Some teams might view Williams as a luxury talent with minimal value due to his lack of size and natural position fit, while other teams will see him as a chess piece that they can deploy to create mismatches and use to stress defenses. His kick-return ability adds value, but there's likely a ceiling on just how highly he will be drafted.

If this guy can return kicks, it was a good pickup. If he can give us what Dunbar did in the passing game since our QBs love to check down, it might be a really good pickup.

If he does nothing but replace Beasley on punt returns he will be a hero

Scouting Report: New RB Williams Shows Surprising Physicality For Size

Wednesday, November 04, 2015 9:25 AM CST

By Bryan Broaddus

Football Analyst/Scout

@BryanBroaddus

Name: Trey Williams

Position: RB
Height: 5-8
Weight: 195
College: Texas A&M
Draft: Signed undrafted with Washington, 2015

Games Studied: Washington Redskins 2015 preseason vs. CLE, DET, BAL, JAX

Report: Williams is competitive for his lack of height. Not afraid of contact. Shows a willingness to stick his nose in the action and physically finish (TWSS).

Outstanding quickness, forward and laterally. Plays with acceleration and a burst. Can capture the edge in a hurry. Showed the ability to run in and out of trouble. Can create with the ball in his hands. Ability to make the first man miss. Runs with toughness inside, but I would not call him a pile mover. Nice short-area foot quickness but can extend that up the field. Good body control and balance.

He wasn’t knocked off his feet by just one tackler. Can change direction if he sees the ability to take the ball all the way across the formation. When you watch him play, you can tell that he plays with his eyes. Quick glances to see where he might have a crease. Breaks tackles with a stiff arm and by keeping his legs moving. He will do his best to finish a run.

In the games I studied, I did not see him put the ball on the ground. He’s a short runner, so naturally he keeps his pads down. There were snaps where he gave his blockers a chance to do their job, then attacked the hole. He’s not always patient because he wants to get going.

While with Washington, he was used as a wide receiver in the pass game scheme-wise. His best work was over the middle on check downs and screens. He will adjust to the ball, secure then get up the field. I was most impressed with his ability to pass protect despite his height. There were situations where his coaches asked him to block defensive ends and big 3-4 outside linebackers. He would step up and play square.

Williams gives everything he can to do the job. Can always improve on technique, but the willingness is there to do the job. He was in the rotation early in these games – usually when Kirk Cousins was in the game. He played a ton of snaps.

He has special teams value as a kickoff return man. He was one of the best in the nation while at Texas A&M averaging over 25 yards a return. Very similar player to what they had with Lance Dunbar in the things he can do offensively but better pass blocker.

I would have liked to see the Australian guy in SF for his size/speed combo. He seemed to be pretty instinctive on punt returns. I agree that this guy is our Dunbar replacement. We've missed his skill set in the passing game more than anything.

Well, I guess we wait and see. Based on recent history with newly added running backs, we should see him in oh, a month or so. /sarcasm

Trey Williams cried, 'lost his mind' when the Cowboys called

Trey Williams was so happy to receive the news of becoming the newest member of the Dallas Cowboys that he cried.

The running back, who was part of the Redskins practice squad, was out shopping at a mall in Washington D.C. with now former teammate Jamison Crowder when he received a phone call from his agent.

"J was like, 'you alright, bro, you good?'

"I'm good,'' Williams told Crowder, via the Dallas Morning News. "I was losing my mind.''

Williams is from the Houston area and played his college ball nearby at Texas A&M. Despite that, he grew up a lifelong Cowboys fan.

“I was more than surprised," Williams said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I can’t even explain it. My agent called me and put my mom on the phone. We just pretty much cried together. This is it. Growing up as a little kid, this is my favorite team. I can only just give thanks to God and just keep giving my all. It’s never going to change.”

Williams rounded out the Cowboys 53-man roster after the team released running back Joseph Randle on Tuesday. Williams will fit into the Cowboys backfield as the fourth-string running back, but could see an expanded role on kick return. The 5-8, 195-back had 70 kick returns for 1,684 yards in college.

With attributes similar to injured running back Lance Dunbar, could Williams find a role replacing him as the team's returner and primary pass catcher out of the backfield?

"For sure,'' Williams said. "Dunbar is an elusive guy, quick, and I feel like I fit that role as well. I feel like I have the speed and the quickness and the elusiveness to get past defenders.

"I'll prove that and I'll show people why the Cowboys picked me up.''

Williams practiced for the first time on Wednesday alongside former Aggies teammate Christine Michael.
