Trey Williams cried, 'lost his mind' when the Cowboys called
Trey Williams was so happy to receive the news of becoming the newest member of the Dallas Cowboys that he cried.
The running back, who was part of the Redskins practice squad, was out shopping at a mall in Washington D.C. with now former teammate Jamison Crowder when he received a phone call from his agent.
"J was like, 'you alright, bro, you good?'
"I'm good,'' Williams told Crowder, via the Dallas Morning News. "I was losing my mind.''
Williams is from the Houston area and played his college ball nearby at Texas A&M. Despite that, he grew up a lifelong Cowboys fan.
“I was more than surprised," Williams said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I can’t even explain it. My agent called me and put my mom on the phone. We just pretty much cried together. This is it. Growing up as a little kid, this is my favorite team. I can only just give thanks to God and just keep giving my all. It’s never going to change.”
Williams rounded out the Cowboys 53-man roster after the team released running back Joseph Randle on Tuesday. Williams will fit into the Cowboys backfield as the fourth-string running back, but could see an expanded role on kick return. The 5-8, 195-back had 70 kick returns for 1,684 yards in college.
With attributes similar to injured running back Lance Dunbar, could Williams find a role replacing him as the team's returner and primary pass catcher out of the backfield?
"For sure,'' Williams said. "Dunbar is an elusive guy, quick, and I feel like I fit that role as well. I feel like I have the speed and the quickness and the elusiveness to get past defenders.
"I'll prove that and I'll show people why the Cowboys picked me up.''
Williams practiced for the first time on Wednesday alongside former Aggies teammate Christine Michael.
