Dez Bryant doing light running as he returns from surgery

Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas – Just as they pronounced after Dez Bryant had surgery to repair his broken right foot, the Dallas Cowboys remain hopeful the star wide receiver will be able to return Oct. 25 against the New York Giants.

Bryant has been doing some light running on a treadmill but has yet to get on the practice field.

“Getting in condition without putting too much stress and strain on his foot, so he has not been out running routes or anything like that up to this point,” coach Jason Garrett said. “There are different ways to run where you can kind of get yourself in as good a shape as possible leading up to it, so he’s been involved in that.”

Bryant had surgery Sept. 14 to repair a broken fifth metatarsal that included a bone graph that the team believes helps the healing process. Last year defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was cleared from a similar surgery after seven weeks.

The Giants’ game is 41 days after surgery. The Cowboys have the bye next week and most of the regulars will be limited in their practice before returning to work Oct. 20.

While the Cowboys wait for Bryant to heal, they see progress in linebacker Sean Lee, who was knocked out of last week’s game with a concussion. Lee was on the practice field Thursday and expected to take part in a limited portion of the workout as he works through the concussion protocol.

“We’re optimistic with how he has responded to everything,” Garrett said.

Tight end James Hanna (ankle), wide receiver Brice Butler (hamstring) and defensive end Randy Gregory (ankle) are missing from practice.

I think he is rushing it. Hope he is doing the right thing. The last thing we need with his contract is for him to be a shadow of himself for the majority of it.

After seeing TO recover from a broken leg in as many weeks, I don't know what's possible any more.

Julio Jones, a better athlete and player, took much longer to recover from same injury.

He may as well let it heal until Romo gets back. Not like Weeden can do anything with him.

The article says Lawrence was cleared after 7 weeks, which is nearly the amount of time between the surgery and the Giants game. Even if he re-injures himself and is out for the year I wouldn't worry about it affecting him in future seasons. Durant had complications with a somewhat similar injury and now seems completely fine, so that doesn't really concern me.

I would feel better if Dez was on the field.

The Falcons were 1-4, playing like shit, and were further into the season than we were when Dez got hurt. He wouldn't have been back until Week 12 or so, the fact that their team had no shot for the playoffs was probably a huge reason that they shut him down. If they were competing for the playoffs he probably would've came back sometime that season.

:lol Every. Time. Whoever happens to be playing well at this precise second is always better than whoever is on our team. Just like how Aldon Smith and JPP were vastly superior to Demarcus Ware.

Neither guy plays WR. Big difference in what they do.

I think a DE puts just as much if not more pressure on a broken foot, it's a lot of stress going against a 300 pounder especially on running plays.

It is a different kind of pressure.

A WR is cutting constantly and a DL, if his foot is sore, can still work other aspects, like power, to win.

A WR has his legs, which indirectly are his feet to get him where he needs to be.

If your foot is sore you have no power, it's easier to run on a sore foot than use it to brace and control somebody.

Dez Bryant is seemingly getting close to making his return.

As Todd Archer of ESPN.com notes, Bryant took the practice field on Thursday wearing shoulder pads. While he was not expected to participate in practice with his teammates, Bryant was scheduled to go through some on-field rehab with an athletic trainer.

Archer reports that the Cowboys are hoping Bryant can make his return in Week 7 against the New York Giants, which is consistent with what we passed along a little over a week ago.

The initial timetable for Bryant’s recovery was 4-6 weeks. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport later reported that Bryant is expected to miss 10-12 weeks after undergoing a bone graft, while ESPN’s Ed Werder said the bone graft performed should help and result in a 6-8 week recovery period.

All signs point to Bryant returning much sooner than expected, and the Cowboys need him badly. With a quarterback situation that is looking as uncertain as ever and Tony Romo still weeks away from coming back, Dallas needs to find a way to keep its season alive. Bryant would provide a major boost in the passing game.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

I'm not sure how effective Dez will be when he gets back. My friend who is an ortho guy said that the actual bone is probably healed by now, and the only danger is that the bone could split where the screws were inserted if the foot were to get caught up in an awkward position again.. Most of all, if there's pain, it will be from the screws. So I guess it boils down to Dez's pain tolerance.

That's good to hear. Dez seems like the kind of guy who will play through discomfort/pain. As long as the bone is healed and he's at no risk to cause further damage, which your friend and the Cowboys seem to think, I don't see why anyone would think it's a bad idea for him to return against the Giants.
