Aggressiveness of Cowboys DBs costly against Saints

Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas -- Quarterback is the most difficult position to play in the NFL, but defensive back might be the most impossible.

In the overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints, the Cowboys' defensive backs were called twice for defensive holding, twice for illegal use of hands and once for illegal contact. The Saints had two defensive holding penalties and two illegal use of hands penalties, while also having a pass interference penalty.

In the first half, a Barry Church interception of Drew Brees was overturned because of a defensive holding on Brandon Carr. In the third quarter, Andrew Gachkar dropped an interception that would have been negated anyway by a Morris Claiborne hold. J.J. Wilcox was called for illegal contact during a pass breakup on the Saints’ second drive of the third quarter.

For the season the Cowboys have five defensive holding penalties, two illegal use of hands calls and an illegal contact and two pass interference calls.

“I’ve never been around that type of game but that’s how they call the game these days,” said Claiborne, who had holding and illegal use of hands penalties. “It’s an offensive league and they’re going to call ticky-tack fouls even when you have a hand on a guy. So that’s the way they called it. We’ve got to do a better job keeping the referees out of it.”

Gachkar and patmon dropping those interceptions did not help one bit.

We were just so close to so many turnovers in that game and just couldn't come up with them. One turnover would have been the difference in the game.
