Zack Martin driven by first two holding calls of his career

Right guard Zack Martin, who had only three penalties, including no holds, accepted against him last season in earning All-Pro honors, had three penalties Sunday.

Martin had penalties for holding and an ineligible downfield, and the Eagles declined a second holding call against him.

“Just got to clean it up,” Martin said. “Watch the film and move on and get better. Yeah, there’s nothing else really to say about that.”

Owner Jerry Jones questioned the holding calls referee Tony Corrente and his crew made against the Cowboys.

Martin had penalties for holding and an ineligible downfield, and the Eagles declined a second holding call against him. Of the team-record 18 penalties, offensive linemen committed nine.

The calls, whether they were legitimate or not, drive Martin.

“You never want to have a holding call,” Martin said. “So yeah, it’s obviously something you’ve got to look at it and really hold yourself to a high standard, and that’s the great thing about our team and our group.”

Martin allowed no sacks last season, according to STATS, Inc., but has allowed one already this season. Still, Martin has not lost his place as one of the best guards in the league and, according to the Cowboys, has improved from last season.

“Zack is someone who is a very capable guy,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He has all of the tools that you want in an offensive lineman. He’s smart. He’s tough. He goes about it the right way. There are not many more dedicated guys to getting better than Zack Martin. That has a lot to do with his success so early in his career. Holding penalties happen. Obviously, we’ll go back and watch the tape. He’s not perfect by any means, and he’ll learn from those experiences. He’s a good football player. He comes to work every day.”

How do you improve on 0 penalties and 0 sacks allowed? It's an impossible standard.

Where are you getting no penalties? He had 2 accepted on him Sunday and allowed a sack. And he had 3 penalties accepted on him last year.

0 holding penalties, I mean. That's not going to last forever no matter how good you are.
