Brandon Weeden excited for challenge of leading Cowboys

Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

PHILADELPHIA -- Brandon Weeden, the car keys are yours.

With Tony Romo out for eight to 10 weeks, according to a source, because of a fractured left collarbone suffered in Sunday’s 20-10 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, Weeden will be the Dallas Cowboys' starting quarterback.

“I have a lot of confidence in Brandon,” coach Jason Garrett said. “More importantly his teammates have lot of confidence in him. We’ll start getting to work on that on Wednesday.”

Weeden’s performance in filling in for Romo offers the Cowboys some hope going forward. He completed seven of seven passes for 73 yards and clinched the game with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Williams with 4:13 to play.

“I’m excited about this challenge,” Weeden said. “I hate it for Tony. I really do. He’s obviously a close friend, but he’s also put a lot of work in for this football team and has for many years, so I hate it for him. I told him I’m going to need him. I’m going to need his help and input and what better guy to have as a guy that can kind of help you and get you through this thing. I’m lucky to have him on our side.”

Weeden’s one start in 2014 did not go well. He completed just 18 of 33 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions in a 28-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Romo’s absence then was two transverse process fractures that kept him out only for one game. This absence will be much longer.

“Whenever Tony did go down, Brandon didn’t panic,” Williams said. “He came in, called the plays that were going on and we got it done.”

Weeden will not have Dez Bryant, as he did in last year’s start against the Cardinals, but he feels like a different quarterback now compared to then. For the first time in his career he has operated in the same system in consecutive years.

In the first two weeks of the season he continued to get first-team snaps on Wednesdays with Romo sitting out to preserve his back.

While many will focus on the strike to Williams in which he faced pressure and still made a perfect throw, he was more pleased with a check-down to Lance Dunbar in his first series of work that didn’t get a first down.

“Maybe three or four years ago we’re down a couple of scores and I may try and force the ball in there and bad things happen,” Weeden said. “That dump down to Lance, that was the play. It didn’t look good and probably won’t remember it, but it was a smart football play and you move on to the next one.”

The Cowboys considered adding a more veteran presence behind Romo in free agency, but talks with Shaun Hill and Matt Schaub never really took off. They worked out more quarterbacks in the pre-draft process than they have in years, but they did not take one. They have Kellen Moore, who has experience with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan from their time together in Detroit, and Jameill Showers on the practice squad. Moore, however, is likely to get the call up with Romo’s injury.

But there is no mistake the Cowboys are going with Weeden.

“I think Brandon’s got a lot going for him,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “Obviously he’s not going to win games the same way Tony wins games. We’ve got a lot of confidence in Scott and Jason and our offensive staff that we’ll figure out the best game plan to give us the best chance to have success. We still have a lot of good football players out there, as you saw tonight.”

Why this opportunity could be different for Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden

For the first time in his football career, Brandon Weeden has the same offensive coordinator in back-to-back years. The Cowboys quarterback can't stress enough how important that has been for him this year.

Weeden and Linehan will need to be on the same page going forward as the former first-round pick becomes Dallas' starter.

"The good thing is that I have started quite a few games in this league so I know from a preparation standpoint, I have done that," Weeden said. "We have a lot of weapons, a lot of good weapons, so my job is to make it easy on those guys, let them do their jobs, get them those one on one matchups, and let them do what they do best."

Weeden's record as a starting quarterback in the NFL is 5-16, which includes eight consecutive losses. In his only start with the Cowboys last year, Dallas lost 28-17 to Arizona. Weeden finished 18 of 33 passing for 183 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

In relief duty Sunday in Philadelphia, Weeden was 7 of 7 for 73 yards, one touchdown and a 149.7 passer rating.

"[Weeden] has been working his [butt] off," Cowboys defensive lineman Jeremy Mincey said. "I think he's a step above where he was last year. That's the beautiful thing about him, he works hard and he continues to try to grow. He's been learning from Tony [Romo], so let's see if that Tony magic rubs off on him."

I have a hatred for Moore but I think he could be serviceable as the backup for now. The guy has no arm strength but he is heady and accurate with the ball. I could see him making the short passing game work for a few game stretch. Eventually defenses will adjust and give zero respect to certain zones on the field that he just can't deliver the ball to but in the short term he would probably be ok.

Romo hasn't pushed the ball downfield this year and I'm wondering how much age and cumulative injury have caught up with him.

His looping pass to Dunbar reminded me of the passes Danny White threw to Mike Sherrard back in 1986. Dude had to heave rainbows that lacked zip.

Maybe Weeden can get a few deep shots back into the offense.

In search of a quarterback to back up Brandon Weeden, the Cowboys will work out veterans Christian Ponder, Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson and McLeod Bethel-Thompson on Tuesday, according to the team's official website.

Ponder was the 12th overall pick in 2011 by the Minnesota Vikings. In four seasons, the former Colleyville Heritage standout, completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 6,658 yards, 38 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. He signed with the Raiders in March but was released before the start of the regular season. Ponder was 14-21-1 as a starter.

Flynn was a seventh round pick in 2008. The Tyler Lee graduate started four games for the Green Bay Packers in 2013. He played in seven games for the Packers last season, completing 8 of 16 passes for 66 yards and one interception. Flynn, 3-4 as a starter, was signed by the Patriots in June and then released in August. He then signed with the Jets but was released earlier this month.

Johnson was a fifth-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2008. He hasn't started a game since 2011. Johnson, 0-5 as a starter, has spent the last three seasons bouncing around the league, playing for the 49ers, Bengals, Browns and Jets.

Bethel-Thompson went undrafted out of Sacramento State in 2010. Since then he has spent time with the 49ers, Vikings, Patriots and Dolphins. He has never appeared in an NFL game. He was signed to Miami's practice squad earlier this month.

With Tony Romo sidelined because of a fractured left clavicle, the Cowboys have only one healthy quarterback on their 53-man roster. Kellen Moore and Jameill Showers are both currently on the team's practice squad, however, neither has appeared in a regular season NFL game.
