Each was an elite tackle prospect before the draft. Two different circumstances. The Redskins really needed tackle help and hoped he would be it. He showed he couldn't even beat out scrubs at the position so they moved him to guard to try and get something from such a high pick, and from what I have read he has only been mediocre at guard. Had we been as thin at tackle as the Redskins, Collins would have been an instant starter.
Each became a guard soon after OTAs.
Dallas is deeper at OG than at OT, actually (Bernadeau>>>Weems), and Leary is younger and just as good as Free. In fact, the first place Dallas tried Collins was RT when Free was banged up.
Collins being a guard has nothing to do with Dallas' depth. It is strictly based on the coaches' opinion of where he's better suited to play. Similarly I think Washington's coaches felt Scherff was a guard, not a tackle, and it didn't have as much to do with Morgan Moses being ahead of him at RT.
Bottom line is that OL should be improving.
