Cowboys Make Five Cuts To Approach NFL’s 75-Man Roster Limit

Monday, August 31, 2015 1:32 PM CDT

By David Helman

DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys made the first five of 15 projected cuts on Monday afternoon, as they prepare to meet the NFL’s 75-man roster limit on Sept. 1.

The team parted ways with Tom Hornsey, Casey Kreiter, Robert Steeples, Phil Bates and Carlif Taylor to begin the roster-trimming process.

They’ll need to make 10 more cuts to reach the 75-man limit by the deadline, which is Tuesday at 3 p.m.

None of the preliminary cuts were major role players during the Cowboys’ 31-day stay at training camp in Oxnard, Calif. Hornsey and Kreiter have now spent two summers with the Cowboys, but neither was considered a serious threat to unseat the respective starter at their position – Chris Jones and L.P. Ladouceur.

Steeples was signed to the practice squad last November and remained with the Cowboys through their playoff run. He saw an uptick in reps during training camp, largely due to a variety of injury issues at the cornerback position.

Bates and Taylor – a wide receiver and a defensive tackle, respectively – spent the least amount of time on the roster. Bates signed on Aug. 20, and Taylor joined on the next day, just in time for both players to get onto the field in the Aug. 23 preseason loss to San Francisco. Neither of the two played a snap in Saturday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Porter surprises me a little. Thought he might make it to the final cut.

Cowboys Release Four, Make Six Roster Moves To Meet 75-Man Limit

Tuesday, September 01, 2015 2:51 PM CDT

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys reached their 75-man roster limit on Tuesday afternoon by releasing four and giving injury designations to another six.

The Cowboys waived linebacker Jonathan Brown, wide receivers Antwan Goodley and David Porter and tight end Brandon Barden. They also waived/injured defensive end Kenneth Boatright, running back Michael Hill and offensive tackle R.J. Dill – all three of whom sustained injuries during training camp.

The most significant of those would be Boatright, who suffered a severe injury scare when he was taken to a local hospital in Oxnard, Calif., with a head injury on Aug. 6. The third-year veteran did not return to practice before his release.

All three players to be waived/injured must clear waivers before reverting to the team’s injured reserve.

In addition, the Cowboys made key injury designations to three players. The most notable of the three would be Orlando Scandrick, who was placed on injured reserve after tearing his ACL and MCL in practice last week. The move officially sidelines the eight-year veteran for the season while he recovers.

Two 2015 draft picks were also given injury designations. Third-round pick Chaz Green, taken No. 91 overall in May, was moved to reserve/Physically Unable to Perform, allowing him time to work back from his offseason hip surgery. Green will be inactive for the first six weeks of the season. After that time period, the team has another six-week window to decide to return him to the practice field or move him to injured reserve.

That will give the Cowboys plenty of time to determine what kind of role Green will have for them this year.

A similar situation applies for seventh-round pick Mark Nzeocha, who was designated to the Non-Football Injury list. The NFI lists functions similarly to the PUP, but it is reserved for injuries that happened away from the Cowboys’ roster. Nzeocha tore his ACL last October, during his final season with Wyoming. He’ll also be inactive for the first six weeks of the season, and the Cowboys will again have a window of time to decide his next move.

With the roster now trimmed to 75, the Cowboys have until Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. to finalize their 53-man roster ahead of the start of the regular season. On Sunday, they will be able to establish their 10-man practice squad as they begin preparations for their Week 1 content against the New York Giants.

-----------

Sounds like Green and Nzeocha will be like additional 2016 draft picks. Awesome!

I'm hoping that Green can still contribute this year after the six weeks. Nzeocha was a stupid pick from the get go. We have so many LBers as it is, that dude was going to have an impossible climb to make the roster. Maybe he will have a better shot to make the roster later in the year after an injury or two hits.

Gardner isn't anything special but I think we probably should've tried to keep him.

With the 2 open roster spots due to Hardy/McClain being suspended I came up with a roster that included 2 QB's, 3 RB's, 1 FB, 5 WR's, 8 OL (being generous honestly, I don't see anybody outside of the starting 5+Collins/Bernadeau who deserve a roster spot but I assume we will keep a swing tackle on top of them), 3 TE's, 10 DL, 6 LB's and 9 DB's. That's 47, add in the 3 specialists and you got 50.

That list includes Lavar Edwards, Davin Coleman and Terrell McClain making the squad. Are there really 3 guys who deserve to make it over Gardner?

Not a huge loss since there is a huge logjam on the DL with our retooling of the spot, we have Gregory, Lawrence, Mincey, Russell, and Edwards at DE alone, not to mention Hardy when he comes back. But from the perspective of trying to keep your best talent, I don't see 3 guys who are better than Gardner in the scenario I came up with.

Not sure how you could keep Edwards over him if that's the case. Lots of speculation as its early. Hopefully we can sneak him on the practice squad.

Is Bishop on that list?

Because I think they really like him and he might be the guy they kept over Gardner.

Yeah, I don't get why they like Edwards but maybe they know something I don't. Not how I would have done it.

He wasn't, and that could be.

As far as Edwards, I don't see any reason why he should be considered worse than Gardner aside from the fact that we as fans are more familiar with Gardner because we drafted him. Edwards has better size/length, looks more athletic, and is only a year older than Gardner.

Gardner just looked a lot better in the training camp stuff I watched. I think he showed up more consistently in preseason games as well. The only argument for Edwards in my opinion is that his athletic ability is greater and thus has a higher ceiling but I don't agree with that.

I actually like Gardner better as a rotational guy but Edwards has flashed more and seems to have some upside, but he also only play one position while Gardner can move around.
