I saw someone on FB mention a defensive player injured. I chanted claibornes name for a minute before logging on here to see who it is.

Damnit.

I was talking to my dad the other day about our upcoming season and how good I thought the team might be.

I told him that while I thought that last season was not a fluke, I did think there was a lightning in a bottle feel to it in certain aspects. For for the first time in the Tony Romo era, everything just went our way. From the overall health of the team, the right calls at the right time, the ball bouncing our way when it used to bounce the other, etc.

For that reason, I told him I wasn't completely confident that this team could replicate what they did last year.

Well, this is our first bad break of 2015 and the season hasn't even started. I don't know what it is, but I just have this gut feeling that this won't be the last bit of bad things to go against us this year.
Climb back in from the ledge. We're alright. Unless I'm missing something this is our first significant injury of the off-season. Every team in the league loses someone leading up to the season.

If Scandrick is our only significant injury casualty of the preseason, I'll consider that a success.

I do hate that he won't be around the team and on the field this year. He has a lot of dog in him like Dez. So it is a bit of a double-blow when you lose a talented player with that type of personality.

This is true although as long as we have either Hardy or Lee on the field, admittedly a risky proposition, I won't worry too much about leadership or having a "dog" on the field.

Frick this. I don't get the Scandrick hate in here. Even if he was struggling this year he's been our best DB for years. This is terrible news

I'm not going to hate on Scandrick. I like the guy. But I don't think it's devastating either because thankfully guys like White and Patmon have really stepped up and shown they have the ability to cover. As much as I like Scandrick there is no reason to sit here and pretend that we lost an elite corner.

Not sure I'm sold on the idea that the Cowboys have "CB depth". Carr and Claiborne are the starters and Jones is an unproven rookie?:unsure People sure are high on Patmon and he has shown that he has some talent but he was an undrafted rookie last year we'll see how he performs this season. Corey White? OK. Sure. Decent depth I guess.

I just think that Carr is average at best, Claiborne is a total crapshoot that has never looked great and will almost definitely get hurt, Jones is a rookie and will probably struggle because of that...not feeling great about the CB position. They better generate consistent pressure on the QB because I don't see an above average CB on the roster.

Amen. This "great depth" is being way overplayed IMO. It's mainly based on a cheap FA the Saints cut and a rookie who has played part of one preseason game. And Claiborne... Lawl.

We have two guys who have played well in camp/preseason so far and a 1st round pick who has done fine by most accounts, what do you guys want in terms of depth at a position?

Do we have 3 Pro Bowl CB's? No, but we have several seemingly serviceable guys who deserve playing time.

This kind of fretting over 3rd and 4th CB's is what leads to over drafting of the position.

I would fret much less over the 3rd, 4th, and 5th CBs if I had any confidence in the #1 and #2.

Scandrick has been one of my favorite players since we drafted him. He carries himself with swagger and will bark at opposing players when it is needed. I bought into him being that guy for us...quite a few guys try to carry themselves that way, but it seems forced.

Exactly.

We won't just miss his play, we'll also miss his attitude and fight.

For me, it's a big loss.

Just to be clear, you guys who like the CB depth understand that one of guys slated to start right now is Morris Claiborne, right?

Yea, I'm no fan of it.

You have Claiborne is who is just awful.

You have Carr whose play over the last 2 seasons has been average at best.

You have Patmon who is scrappy, but it still very much an unknown as far as expectations are concerned.

And then you have the rookie Jones who on top of being a rookie, he happens to be a guy who has struggled in the preseason and came from a school where he played against no real talent of note. A guy who was a 2nd rounder at best until he had this great combine - something I have never been a fan of.

When I look at our CB situation, I see a lot of uncertainty. So this Scandrick injury is most definitely a significant blow.

I think the best chance we have of seeing this secondary not become a liability is not for them to step up and pleasantly surprise us, it's for the pass rush to become beastly and make it to where these guys don't have to cover for very long.

I'm in no way suggesting that the season is doomed, but I sure as hell am not going to look at the CB position and say that it's just fine and nothing to worry about.

But he's having the camp of his life! :towel

(Do some of you guys still trust the camp reports on how great our players are doing?)
