Jerry Jones: We have enough moving parts, no need to move La’el Collins to OT

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was in an exceptionally good mood during a Tuesday morning radio interview.

While talking about what caught his eye during Monday’s practice against the St. Louis Rams, Jones specifically mentioned the drills between the Cowboys’ offensive line and the Rams’ defensive line.

“I was standing in a tower about 15 feet over them, just that close,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan’s G-Bag Nation show [KRLD-FM]. “I’m telling you, one place you don’t want to be in this world is in the middle of St. Louis’ defensive line and our offensive line. God, dog, you’re talking about some talent and you’re talking about knocking each other’s ass off, they were doing it.”

Jones then specifically praised rookie left guard La’el Collins. However, Jones pumped the brakes on any talk of moving Collins to tackle. The Cowboys like their options with Doug Free starting at right tackle, despite recent foot and ankle issues, and Darrion Weems being the swing tackle.

“Free has every chance to be what we want him to be, we’re just going slow with Free,” Jones said. “And then we want Weems, who has had a little bit of a setback injury-wise, and certainly didn’t have as good of an outing against San Diego as we would like to see. But we had practiced him the whole time at right [tackle] and he ended up playing left because Tyron [Smith] didn’t play.

“Bottom line is, we got enough moving parts here, it’s not time to be moving La’el, he’s doing so well getting locked in on guard and having his reps there. He gives us so much strength with him and [Ron] Leary. If both of them are there all year long and give us that interior strength, that’s probably more advantageous to us.”

Why would he not be moved to T? That's predominantly what he played in college, and it's where we currently need him the most.

Collins is a guy who isn't going to be a starter right out of the gate, so I don't see the harm in trying to find where he best fits into the line.

Sure his power shows up at G, but they have no idea how he'd do at RT.

You're going to need to shore up one of the positions eventually, since Free is old and Leary's knees could go at any time.

But you have Bernardeau as backup at G and then absolute shit at swing tackle.

Let Collins get in where he will be the best pro long term. Right now we have that luxury.

If we want to have our best 5 OL in the game Collins should be given the chance at tackle. Say Free goes down, does anyone really want to see him on the bench with Weems starting? If he can't beat out friggin Weems at T then he definitely doesn't belong there but my moneys on Collins

I can understand the logic of not moving a guy around, letting him key in on learning one position.

But that's a stance you take with a guy who is plug and play...a guy who is definitely going to be starting, like Frederick and Martin the last couple years.

I thought it was nuts when they talked of trying Fred at G his rookie season.

It's crazy to me that they have this gift and seem to be forcing him into a position of Leary's backup instead of taking his long term success into account.

Not to say that he'd be All-Pro at RT, but they apparently made the call to put him at G during OTA's because his footwork was shoddy. So he hasn't been able to show what he can do live yet.

I'd just hate for him to be a really good G if he could possibly be that road grader RT we've lacked since Big E's departure.

I think they see the same as Martin with him, posibly a ProBowl T, but absolutly an All-Pro G.

If Collins is not a right tackle we will need to find one in the next year or two, because Doug Free is not long for this world.

Did you ever consider that the entire staff took one look at his feet in drills and determined that he isn't a good fit right now?

It's absolutely stupid. My impression is they are "saving" the RT spot for Green. The kid's never done anything but get hurt, Weems sucks, and Free is very doubtful to play 16 games.

He's only played 16 games every season except 2014. SUPER FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE DOUBT.

That's what coaches are for, to coach him to get better at that. We are really thin at T right now, and the should be giving him a longer look.

At what point do we really start buying into our own internet coaching skills here? Do you really believe that you are a better football decision maker than the professionals?

I really am not trying to be a smart ass.

For reals though...some days I have to just laugh. Some of yall have really bought into your own stuff.

I saw Weems play the other night. That's all I need to see to think that a guy that played tackle at a high level his entire college career would be better.

I promise I'm not trying to be a smart ass. I know I've done the same thing 1,000,000 times out of frustration as a fan.

This won't go ever well buuuuuuut I'm gonna go ahead and says it. I probably have more real coaching experience than anyone on this board. You internet wizards are a complete joke to guys who have been in the actual trenches and have dedicated their lives to the game. I'm not talking about me because I don't hold myself in that high of a regard. Still, I feel like a have a decent grasp on how it works in the real world because I've actually seen some of it with my own eyes. I don't consider that I am 5% of what these NFL guys are. Yet, we here at the DCC have internet football wizard who are so amazing that we can diagnose positions, skills and consult on what needs to be done from our computers at our regular jobs (that we obviously volunteer at since we really are NFL coaches in disguise).

Is there any chance thay mayyyyyybe the Collins situation had been internally evaluated by professionals?

I'd much rather have him focus on G. The current staff did a good job of developing Parnell, so hopefully they can do the same with some of the bodies playing RT now. They had Martin focus solely on G last year and that seemed to work out pretty well.
