It's funny I just read a report about Devin Street struggling and not getting any separation. This report on the other hand makes it sound like he looks great. You have to love the fact that two people can see the exact same thing and come to two totally different conclusions.
saw the same thing.

this is how scouts/columnists have jobs. they only need to be right partially. kind of ridiculous if you ask me

IIRC, they did away with all that emergency QB active roster spot stuff in the new CBA.
I didn't realize that. I always thought it was a stupid rule

I was just speculating given his injury history. No need to be alarmed............ yet.
Yeah you freaked me out at first too and then I looked over everything and realized nothing has actually happened yet.

But now you just jinxed him. So when he gets hurt I will put all of the blame on you.

He doesn't need to be jinxed. He does that all on his own.

Cowboys runners know the importance of blocking too

Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

OXNARD, Calif. -- As the Dallas Cowboys running backs went through individual drills on Sunday afternoon, running backs coach Gary Brown reminded them what was ahead: blitz-pickups against the linebackers.

The easy part for a running back is actually running the ball. The hard part is pass protection.

“To me at the end of the day it comes down to two things: You’ve got to know your assignments and you’ve got to be tough,” Brown said. “We can talk about technique and this and that. At the end of the day, you’ve got to go up there and hit him in the mouth and block him. Period. I think a lot of people make it a little more difficult than it has to be. Obviously there’s a technique to it that we’d like to use, but at the end of the day, we’ve got to get a guy up blocking and keep 9 up.”

No. 9 is Tony Romo. In 2010, fullback Chris Gronkowski missed his assignment and linebacker Michael Boley had a free shot at Romo, who suffered a season-ending broken collarbone.

As the Cowboys look to replace DeMarco Murray's 1,845 rushing yards, they also need to replace his pass protection of Romo. He wasn’t perfect, but he was tested.

“DeMarco was great at it,” Brown said. “We’re working to get to that level. We’re not there yet. These guys we have are going to work hard to get to that point where Tony feels very comfortable back there.”

Darren McFadden is the biggest of the Cowboys’ contenders at 220 pounds but he has yet to practice because of a hamstring injury. Joseph Randle checks in at 210. Lance Dunbar is 195.

Randle showed some fight in meeting Anthony Hitchens in the hole on the first snap of one-on-one drills. Dunbar did the same with Damien Wilson. The drill is not completely realistic since the linebackers do not have to sift their way through linemen to get to the running backs.

But it’s not about the size.

“It’s about the fight,” Randle said. “If you fight, you go in there with the right mindset to block, you can do it.”

There are smarts involved too. Early in camp Romo is having the runners point to the linebackers at different times in addition to pointing out the potential pass-rushers himself.

“He tries to make everybody’s job easier out there,” Randle said.

Because Romo knows how important the task is.

“There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that and the consequences of not doing that well on Sunday are significant,” coach Jason Garrett said. “So you really have to have someone you can trust, who understands defenses, understands calls, physically knows how to block guys because those are significant plays and defenses do such a great job in this league in challenging you in so many different ways schematically that if you’re not quick mentally to be able to handle those different things and you’re hesitant again the consequences of that are significant for your football team.”

Also, any of you guys get a chance to watch the Inside Cowboys TC on Fox Sports Southwest?

Marc Colombo is part of the staff and he has lost a ton of weight. Unlike Nate Newton, though, he looks good and not like he's sick.

Top storylines from Day 5 of Cowboys camp: Will Dez Bryant-Tyler Patmon battle carry over?

David Moore

The push to the regular season continues with the team returning to the practice field after the first off day of this camp. Here’s a look at what happened yesterday and what lies ahead.

Top 3 story lines from Day Five

This will be the first practice since Dez Bryant and Tyler Patmon got after each other. The first fight of training camp was a protracted affair, simmering on the sidelines well after the initial altercation had ended. All eyes will be on these two when they find themselves lined up across from each other today. The players were off yesterday. Not Jeremy Mincey. The defensive end, who didn’t report to Oxnard until Saturday evening, spent part of Monday on the practice fields with coaches in individual drills. He intends to work back into practice today, but it’s unclear how active he’ll be.

Orlando Scandrick skips organized team activities and gets a new contract.

Brandon Carr says he won’t take a pay cut and reports to camp with his salary intact. Mincey ends a brief holdout when the Cowboys sweeten his salary by $500,000. Are the Cowboys setting a potentially dangerous precedent that will encourage more players to adopt this strategy in future negotiations, or is the club responsibly handling these situations to minimize distractions? In the interest making sure everyone is all in on this season, is it worth it? Owner Jerry Jones argues it’s the latter, saying the money the team didn’t spend to retain DeMarco Murray is going back into the team in different ways.

What to expect

Given the spirited nature of Sunday’s practice, the same can be expected after a day off. One other element should crank up the electricity. This practice will be shown live as a SportsCenter Special on ESPN.

Quote

Stephen Jones on what Tony Romo said to Dez Bryant to try to get him to calm down in Sunday’s fight:

“He said, ‘Nothing good’s going to come from this. If you turn around and break your hand, then I’m going to end up breaking mine because I’m going to be so mad at you, I’m going to hit you. So no more of this hitting and no more swinging, let’s move on and get to work.’

They said that on Saturday, too, and it never happened.

Byron Jones: I have to be better in press coverage; ‘I got to punch. I got to hit somebody’

Jon Machota

OXNARD, Calif. — Jason Garrett often tells his players to, “distinguish yourself with your play, not with what you say.”

Byron Jones fits that motto as well as anyone on the Cowboys roster. The first-round pick politely answers every question, but impressively avoids delivering any bulletin board material. Asked what his goal is for the upcoming season, Jones responds, “contribute and get better every day.”

That’s exactly what Garrett wants to hear.

Following his first practice in pads, Jones said he had a rough day. He wasn’t satisfied with how he played in press coverage, something he’ll do often this season.

“Patience in the press technique, not moving out too quick, staying square and using my God-given talent,” Jones said. “The receivers are just bigger and stronger and they’re faster. You got to be more physical. I can’t just skate around. I got to punch. I got to hit somebody.”

The Cowboys are using Jones in a variety of ways. He’s played corner in base defense, both on the outside and inside. He’s also played safety and been the extra defensive back in both nickel and dime packages.

“We like what he did in the spring, playing corner outside, also showed some position flex, he played some safety, we actually had him inside at nickel at different times, so we anticipate him being one of those kinds of players,” Garrett said. “That’s one of the things we liked about him on draft day, and he’s really a dedicated, consciousness kid too. So he’s one of those guys because of his physical traits, because of his approach, we anticipate him improving.”

During rookie minicamp, Jones was asked for a welcome-to-the-NFL-moment. He mentioned the fines players can receive for losing their iPad playbooks.

What has been the most eye-opening experience since arriving at training camp?

“I guess all these fans here,” Jones said. “Every day. Practice One with pads on and you have thousands of fans out here. It’s pretty amazing the support we have, not only in Dallas but in California and across the nation.

“It kind of feels like a game with all these fans. I’m having a great time.”

See what a bad example Dez is? Now our rookies think you have to hit people. SMDH

Play him at safety. He can probably turn into a decent CB but seems like a natural FS to me.
