Cowboys Sign Pair Of Linebackers To Address Depth

Monday, August 03, 2015 8:07 PM CDT
By Rob Phillips

OXNARD, Calif. – On Monday's non-practice day, the Cowboys continued to address their linebacker depth on the training camp roster by signing Jonathan Brown and Ka’Lial Glaud following a scheduled workout.

Glaud (Rutgers) appeared in seven games for the Buccaneers after going undrafted in 2013.

Brown (Illinois) was recently released by the Bears. Undrafted in 2014, he has spent time on the Cardinals’ and Bears’ practice squads.

To make room for both, the club waived/injured linebacker Justin Anderson and Reshod Fortenberry.

Linebacker depth has been light with Rolando McClain (knee) on Active/PUP, Justin Jackson getting waived/injured, and Keith Rivers retiring. The Cowboys are also easing Sean Lee back into full practice work as part of his return from last year’s knee injury.

Not impressed either but it fits the pattern.

They pretty much are saying the LB roster is set and don't want to bring in a vet that may end up having guaranteed money if they are on the roster week one.

Who is out there that might be interesting?

There might be a guy or two that could play ST and have flex options.

Ashlee Palmer was worked out, he has played inside and out and is a good ST guy. I am not aware of anything that is wrong with him physically.

Right now, they are just looking for disposable players.

They brought back the two busts from last camp and then these guys.

On one hand I get it, on the other it just seems lazy and cheap.

Lance Briggs.
Never happen unless he's going to start, because he isn't playing STs.

That's a side effect of the roster size thing. I think that needs to change.

NFL teams would be so much better if they could afford to employ veterans who can still fill in, but aren't young meat for the grinder on STs.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

Bigger question...why hasn't there been any blips about McDaniel? Surely he would be a huge upgrade.

Ashlee Palmer would be a solid signing, that's what I was hoping for when I opened this thread instead of these schlubs.

His play has been tapering off the last 2 years he is 30 and had o sacks last year.

2.5 total over the last 3 years and Hayden had more solo and combined tackles last year.

He might be more name than player anymore.

He is an instant upgrade over McClain and Crawford both.

If you say so it must be true.

I'm sure you watched the games.

I have no issue bringing him in but I don't think he moves the needle that much.

I should have clarified. I meant T. McClain and J. Crawford.

And, yes, it's true.

Not only is it the bigger issue, it's the "real" issue.

Come on, no sense in complaining about Lance Briggs. He's ancient. If Marinelli isn't clamoring to bring him in then he probably knows something we don't.

This is one of those situations where the Spagnola principle applies, I'd bet.

But a real 1-tech DT would be excellent and let us shed Hayden.

I don't think a real nose tackle matters to Marinelli. That's a big reason why Hayden is still around. If he does whatever diversion he thinks works best, he is fine with that.

I think that is limiting the team's overall health for the sake of his scheme, but it is what it is.

Ka'Lial Glaud is not an NFL Caliber linebacker. Decent in college, nothing in the NFL

This is one of those things I just don't get about Marinelli. You watch plays and Hayden is basically handled with no problem by a single blocker. What exactly is the benefit of that? To me a NT is supposed to require a double team. If Hayden isn't commanding that then he needs replaced in my book. I love me some Marinelli as a defensive coordinator but I don't understand the logic behind this.
