Broaddus: Collins' Progress, Martin vs. Hardy Among Sunday's 12 Thoughts

@BryanBroaddus

OXNARD, Calif. – There’s no practice today, as the Cowboys enjoy their first day off in training camp. There is, however, plenty to discuss from Sunday’s afternoon session – not just the fight, but plenty of other tidbits.

Here are my top 12 thoughts from Sunday’s practice:

1) It was a day where Jason Garrett spoke about his team's willingness to fight and it finished with his star player backing those words up. It was the second straight practice where Tyler Patmon was very physical in the way he attacked these receivers. In the first snap of the team compete period, Patmon got his hands up into Dez Bryant's face as he started into his route. You could tell by the way that Bryant reacted that something was going to happen. Two plays later, it did -- Patmon again got his hands high and Bryant already upset from the previous snap was not going to take any more of that.

2) I am starting to enjoy the Greg Hardy battles with Zack Martin as much as I am the ones with Tyron Smith. There are now snaps where we see them together in one-on-one as well as the blitz period, which presents a unique challenge for the young guard. What is evident when you watch these matchups is that Martin realizes that he must get to Hardy quickly before he has time to make his rush. The longer you wait on Hardy, the more dangerous he is.

3) It was a better day for Cole Beasley releasing off the line in the one-on-one drills and that carried over into the team periods. If you watched our Training Camp Live segment from Saturday, you would have seen Beasley struggling with the corners that were playing him off the line. Where Beasley is at his best is in his ability to operate in space and work into his routes. He was able to create more of that on Sunday.

4) In an interesting move, the coaching staff has rookie quarterback Jameill Showers lining up at some key spots on special teams. Showers was getting work as the personal protector on the punt team, L2 on the kick off team and off return man as a blocker on the kickoff return. To his credit he has looked comfortable at all the spots.

5) Coaches had to be pleased with the way that Brandon Carr was able to play the ball in the blitz period, coming away with an interception. Carr was very physical off the line, denying Terrance Williams the path inside -- which made the throw from Romo a contested play. Carr was in outstanding position to make the play and rip the ball away from Williams for the turnover.

6) It appears that every time I watch Devin Street run a route, he is fighting to get separation and more often than not it’s just not happening. You can see that he is working extremely hard with his technique, but he just hasn't been able to find that space that he needs to operate.

7) Saw some nice blitz pickup up combo work from La'el Collins and Mackenzy Bernadeau. This is where rookies usually struggle the most, but you can tell Bernadeau has the confidence that Collins is up to the task. There were several snaps where, as a group, they had to sort out linebackers, defensive linemen and even some rushers from the secondary all while pulling it off nicely.

8) Starting to have some concerns about J.J. Wilcox and his ability to cover without holding his man. There have been several snaps where Wilcox is battling his man down the field and you notice him grabbing cloth in an attempt to position himself in coverage. If it continues to be a problem, there are other options with guys like Corey White and Byron Jones to play in coverage situations.

9) Don't know if Tony Romo checked to this play at the line during team period, but facing a double "A" gap blitz, he popped a screen pass to Lance Dunbar off the right side. At the snap it appeared that Romo was going to get sacked, but Dunbar was able to float through the oncoming rushers as the line set up their blocks. The ball was in a perfect spot and the result was a sizable gain. Perfect call and execution for the situation.

10) It's been back-to-back practices where Davon Coleman has shown up. Before camp I questioned his desire to be the type of player I observed in college and portions of last season, but it appears that the light has come on. Coleman has been powerful and difficult to handle -- against both the run and pass. There has been more praise in his play from Rod Marinelli, and in talking to some scouts, they have noticed a change as well.

11) Geoff Swaim has been getting work in the team periods, but where I have noticed him the most is in the one-on-one work against the linebackers and safeties. There is a smoothness to his game as a route runner and with his ability to cover ground. He made a nice adjusting catch against J.J. Wilcox where he was able to separate – then he came back once again, this time separating from Tim Scott to grab a ball.

12) Rod Marinelli played some dime on Sunday with Byron Jones lining up over Jason Witten. This is a package that you are looking to be used more giving the size of Jones and his ability to be physical and cover. It's a nice way to match those teams that have tight ends that are pass catchers like New England and Seattle. Jones looks comfortable in playing this role.

About damn time, too bad Haslett still isn't around or they could show him they finally figured it out

With Lee "probably" out for the year, this is smart. We don't have great coverage LBer's, and having a big DB on the TE in dime sets could be genius.

My question is pretty simple.

NFLN has these live training camp cut ins.

Last night it was a Zapruder film breakdown of Dez Bryant taking a swing at Patmon. Very little true coverage. Five seconds here and there.

Tonight (well earlier today and re-broadcast) a full blown step by step, live coverage of the goddamn Steelers. Like you are there in Latrobe.

WTF.

Fuck NFLN. They aren't being true at all. They have twice said they would have live camp coverage and it equates to 5 mins here and there if that.

Yeah they have done nothing over 5 minutes.

But I think we get a exclusive Cowboy camp show sometime this week.

Why not just let every team set up their own feed. Once again NFL dilutes its own product and insults the fans because it wants to push a failed channel on an obsolete medium.

The NFLN insults the fans daily with it. They do it because they can.

Like a pusher who basically spits in your face.

JUST CHILL: 10 Thoughts from Sunday’s Cowboys Practice

Cowboys Corner Blog

By Clarence E. Hill Jr.

My thoughts/observtions from Sunday’s workouts

1. Dez Bryant was the talk of practice because of the fight with Tyler Patmon. It must be noted that Patmon threw the first punch. But what shouldn’t be overlooked is that Bryant was having a great day before the meltdown. There was only one time in which a ball from Tony Romo to Dez Bryant hit the ground and that was near the end of practice. Before that they connected on nearly everything in 1-on-1 to 7-on-7 to team drills. Bryant did most of his damage against Brandon Carr after wearing out Orlando Scandrick on Saturday.

2. Bryant is the best receiver on the team. Cole Beasley might be quietly making a move to being the second-best receiver on the team, although he is the nickel slot receiver behind Terrance Williams and Bryant. Beasley is a technician in the slot and he makes it look so easy. He and Orlando Scandrick are having a heck of a battle in the slot. Beasely is certainly the most consistent of the receivers behind Dez Bryant.

3. Speaking of Terrance Williams, he did not have one of his best days on Sunday. Brandon Carr out fought him for an interception from Tony Romo. Carr also had a pass deflection against him. Williams dropped an easy pass on a crossing route and he had a false start, prompting him to get replaced in the lineup and a yell from Tony Romo, “come on, Terrance.”

4. Lance Dunbar may end up being the team’s kickoff returner but he has a long way to go to handle punt returns. He just doesn’t look comfortable back there and is not making good decisions on which balls to catch.

5. Rookie defensive end Randy Gregory is continuing to grow and learn. He got the best of Tyron Smith on a play in 1-on-1 pass-rush drills, prompting a little trash talking from Hall of Famer Charles Haley. He also knocked Darrion Weems off balanced with “his heavy hands” that coach Jason Garrett bragged about during the press conference earlier in the day. Gregory might be slightly built but he has heavy hands and you feel it when he puts them on you. Not a bad trait for a pass rusher.

6. Second-year receiver Devin Street has had a strong start to camp and looks much better than he did as a rookie. He showed up by beating Brandon Carr for a pass from Romo in the compete drill in front of thee team.

7. Rookie cornerback Byron Jones flashed his play-making skills with a leaping interception off backup quarterback Brandon Weeden. He also got in with the starters when the Cowboys went to the dime defense.

8. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli cranked up the intensity Sunday with a cursing tirade throughout practice. The defensive line felt his wrath. It also shows that he has a lot of expectation for that unit which is markedly more talented than the bunch he played with a year ago.

9. Greg Hardy is a proven elite pass rusher but he gets handled regularly by left tackle Tyron Smith. Hardy is an energetic, whirling dervish, especially for a man his size. It is of no matter to Smith, who keeps him at arms length.

10. Rookie guard La’el Collins is just starting to show his stuff now that the pads are on and he can get physical. He buried rookie Ryan Russell on a pass rush drill.

Former A&M/UTEP QB Jameill Showers also getting work on Cowboys special teams

Cowboys Corner Blog

By Charean Williams

Jameill Showers isn’t Ryan Tannehill. The former Texas A&M and UTEP quarterback isn’t switching positions, like Tannehill did for a season in College Station, but Showers has shown his athleticism and versatility on special teams.

“He’s a really good athlete,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He runs well. He’s strong. He’s aware. He’s smart. So he is certainly working at quarterback, but we’re also trying to give him opportunities to show that he could have a role on this team maybe somewhere else.”

Showers has practiced on the kickoff return team as an off returner and on the punt team as the personal protector. It’s something he hasn’t done since the seventh grade, though he did double as a safety in high school.

“[Special teams] coach [Rich] Bisaccia came up and asked if I’d be willing to play special teams,” Showers said. “I wasn’t getting too many reps in OTAs and things, and I am a rookie. Anything I can do to help the team.”

Showers completed 31-of-49 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns in two years at A&M, beaten out for the job by Johnny Manziel after Tannehill’s departure. In two seasons at UTEP, Showers completed 56.1 percent of his passes for 3,121 yards, 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

“We want to see him play quarterback,” Garrett said. “We like him as a quarterback. He has been someone who has kind of showed up in the drills, and we want to make sure we give these guys a complete chance to show what they’re all about.”

That brings up an interesting question. I know Hines Ward was the Steelers emergency 3rd string QB a few times. If your 3rd string QB is an active player at another position can you still use the special 3rd QB quasi-inactive roster spot? Like in the Steelers case could they have designated a WR in that spot in case Ward had to move over to QB?

IIRC, they did away with all that emergency QB active roster spot stuff in the new CBA.

They ended it in 2011. The old rule even said if your 3rd qb played any position then the other two couldn't play. I'm assuming Hines wasn't listed as the third qb???

It's funny I just read a report about Devin Street struggling and not getting any separation. This report on the other hand makes it sound like he looks great. You have to love the fact that two people can see the exact same thing and come to two totally different conclusions.
